This isn't the argument I would make but I definitely see people complaining about what he's talking about. The problem is the boat anchors of the veterans on this team that offer nothing but a warm body on the ice. The rookies I have no complaints about there's going to be growing pains. The leaders/vets on the bottom 6 have been absolutely abysmal. I'll give Chariot credit slightly only because its a contract year if he's only going to play like this on contract years buh bye. I can't wait for these vets to leave which they will soon. They're work ethic is a bad influence on our rookies or maybe its not work ethic maybe they just have no skill. I can see Yzerman wanting to keep his prospects betting on the long game thus giving no options for trade value of what we have currently playing on this team who aren't our main players. We're stuck if there's not a willingness to move prospects. FA are rare now and lets face it no one is wanting to come here.
The hronek and walman trades look bad. Besides that I wouldnt change a thing. Maybe not sign copp and jt and just embrace the tank a few extra seasons
The bottom line is, the Red Wings are not a good team. Once again, Stevey tried to get goaltending and it has backfired. So I ask myself, is it Stevey or is it a lack of motivation with Gibson because he came to a not so go team? Then you have a lot of players that are just taking up space on the team. Copp needs to go. He has not been good since he got here. Again, is it Copp's effort or Stevey's bad judge of talent. They need to decide if the are going to play Jonatan Berggren. In or out. If in, play him full time. If out, trade him while you can get something for him. Patrick Kane. I love him and wish we had a longer version, but we don't. My wife is always saying it is afraid of getting in and battling for a puck. Is that type of play something that has carried over to other players? Michael Rasmussen, every year he hits a week to ten day run where he makes you say, that is why we drafted him. But shortly after, he will not show up for a couple months. My opinion is, he needs to go. Elmer Söderblom is another player they need to decide if he is in or out. They are not in the lineup long enough to establish themselves. Kasper, I would keep him on the line with Kane and DeBrincat. They had their chances the last couple of games when they were together. Daniels, I don't think he is ready yet. Playing on the 3rd and 4th line with a bunch of stiffs doen't help his development. There are just so many issues that it is hard to decide where to start. Now you know why the Free Agents didn't want to come to Detroit. Stevey, to his credit, didn't just go out and sign someone to say he signed someone, but what we got isn't that good. It's like Chevy Chase going on the Hover Dam tour and putting bubble gum on the leaks in the walls. They just keep popping up. As you said, 1/3 of the team is trying to figure out the NHL. Part of me says blow the team up. I guess I would say, we have 2 good top lines. We need all new 3 and 4 lines. As for the D men, keep Hamonic off the ice and upgade either Docker or Chiarot and I think we will be ok. I believe a lot of the defensive laps are on the forwards. If I had an answer, I would feel better, but I don't. I don't even want to watch them because it is the same thing every day.
When you cant figure out whats wrong you have to take a step back and look at the few constent over the period of time effected. Yzerman, Larkin as captain, Lack of goaltending, dead weight contrasts. You don't have to like it but, there you are.
Does anyone know how well Rudy Guimond is progressing? I think we know that Cossa will never be an NHL level goalie, so I'm hoping Rudy Guimond will. That would be awesome with the "Rudy" chants like the movie 😂.
What about Kasper? In 26 games, he has 3 goals, 0 assists, he's a -11, while averaging over 14 minutes per game. How is he still in the lineup every game?
Maybe the problem is with the captain..strip him off the captaincy or trade him. ?
While I don't disagree with the assertion that Lyon would be leading the team with his current numbers, how is the defense playing in front of Lyon versus how our defense is playing in front of Gibson? How would Lyon fare if he had this defensive system in front of him? Seeing how Buffalo has defended against us versus how we've "defended" against them, I'm gonna guess his numbers would be worse, and we'd have people clamoring for Gibson once more.
I know it's been a long time since the Red Wings have been good I've been watching for 35 years now so I grew up watching the 25 straight years of playoffs I get it. We as a fan base need to stay patient he is building a really good young team from the ground up kinda like they did when Stevie Y was drafted. I think next year will finally be this teams break out year. We are not out of playoffs yet so there is still hope that Gibson and Talbot can get there crap together and the young guys start to get the NHL pace of play down we might get dangerous this year yet. Let's Go Red Wings!!
I like Alex Lyon…a real battler
Wish there was a swing for the fence kinda trade, Hughs would be sweet
Let's go Red Wings!!
Yzerman needs to go! If we have great prospects we'll lets play them
Legorock, my brutally honest take is that your voice and mannerisms are the definition of "Beta". Like offensive levels of Beta.
Yzerman is a lousy GM! A great player but a lousy GM!
Analytics say Kasper doing right things. Shots from slot, etc Whole red wing team is 6th in expected goals but 26th in scoring so what is going on? Coaching?
Fair assessment. I also think you’re right, because I am a fan who has been in both camps. I have strongly advocated for the youth movement, but I have also been pro free agent AND reluctant to be willing to trade top prospects. Sitting back and looking at it objectively and not as a fanboy, I can see a team being built the right way with depth being created at the NHL and AHL levels. With good coaching and buy-in from the players, the Wings should eventually be a competitive team, an annual playoff team for several seasons. They will be in a position to reload when someone becomes too expensive, as well as a premier destination for free agents. After this past offseason there were several rumors of some top free agents absolutely rejecting Detroit from their short-list of landing destinations. Why? Yzerman has the reputation of being a tough negotiator as far as money and term, and Detroit fights to stay at the top of the middle of the pack right now. I think Detroit needs to continue to be very careful with the assets of prospects and players until a solid deal on a good player with contract control can happen. Otherwise we give a lot up for someone who doesn’t want to be here and splits as soon as they have the opportunity. I love him, but think about DeBrincat’s situation in Ottawa. The only way he would have stayed there would be if they would have massively overpaid. Hopefully we see a few games in Detroit from some of the more “veteran” prospects in GR, as well as some starts from actual veterans like Leonard and Shine.
All that to say we need Cossa or Augustine to be great and fast. We have tried all the used goalies in the league. Until we have a for sure #1 goalie the struggle will continue. I agree that Stevie has made all the moves he could without sacrificing even more of the future. Folks wanted the young guys to play. So be patient a minute longer while the goalies get it together.
D has to many holes in each group. You could have Sawchuck in net n it would not make a difference.
Great conversation.
I believe there’s truth to the criticism’s of the pro scouting department but as fans we have no idea what goes on behind the scenes or what players Yzerman was pursuing but didn’t want to come to Detroit. I just have a hard time criticizing Steve when we don’t know all the details.
We’re just at a point in the rebuild where our young guys need to get NHL reps, there’s no way around it.
Maybe fans need to readjust the expectations for the season.
All of the sweeds are Soft. One of our top Austrians is struggling so bad he's on the third line. It's really not Steve's fault. I didn't think the trading pool had much to offer.. if Hughes comes to Detroit that would change everything.
I really think the coach and staff just don’t have it ! 19 clueless
Gibsons way past his prime
Any goaltender on this team is going to look bad. The team is soft, they give up way too many odd man rushes and then let guys just stand out in front of the net where they can tip in shots that the goalie has no realistic chance of saving.
Been saying letting king Lyon go was a mistake from the get go… also that signing the Hammer was the best play for our opposition possible… just another one of many horrible FA signings and decisions. Drafting is the only thing done better than average.
Verbeek > Yzerman
It seems to me Illitch doesn’t like hockey as his father did. Maybe RW is his second choice. He is making money on that (not a champion team but still profit – as a company) and that’s fine for him.
