I'm still wondering how you can think that you improve your team by getting rid of a 100+ points a year scorer. I'm totally puzzled by this bizarre decision.
do you have a seat geek code by chance i’d love to support ?
All the core 4 or 3 has ever done is offensive it just shows more now because they lost the only guy that cares
Florida lost a lot of players not doing the best but everyone thinks they will be in playoffs
Toronto has the easiest schedule the first half of the season, good luck with the back end…
It’s not the coaches fault from the whole team stand point berube is the one that shows passion compared to the actual guys that’s in the line up.. it’s either get rid of some guys that can suck it up and really want to win a cup for Toronto instead of having the perks of getting paid millions to half ass the games and believe it’s good enough for what their worth
It’s become a popular trend? Bro, it’s been that way for decades. Outside of the Potvin, Gilmour, Clark era(great core), it’s been easy to rip on the Leafs. They have no idea how to build a team.
The media just panders to their garbage as well. It’s comical.
Giving the C to star players instead of actual leaders is such a huge mistake teams make. Some players can do both but many cant.
They are last in the east a couple of days before christmas if anyone had predicted this leafs fan would have redacted you like the Epstein files
I ttink you overrate this team alot
POPULAR TREND???? Making fun of the Leafs lack of success is a time honored Canadian tradition dating back to 1967
They need a guy like Marner.
i lowkey have a feeling this is gonna turn out exactly like the 2019 St. Louis Blues but idk probably just me
Holds team accountable….lol…you lost me there.
Dude, there aint no turn'n this around. They suck!
Sounds similar to Vancouver’s issues
The leafs are the titanic (bottom of the Atlantic) I’m a Canadiens fan. I’ll do anything to roast the leafs
As a leafs fan, I truly believe that Mathews isn't playing to get the coach fired, he's playing to get himself fired! He obviously doesn't want to adapt to Chief's system because it's too hard. He wants out, and we fans will pack his bags for him. He's an emotionless fish, and it's time to cut bait!!
Wyatt Johnston has more pp goals than the entire leafs team.
Cup teams have elite defense and great goaltending, the fact the media hypes people on Woll and Stolarz is absolutely hilarious and who's their number 1 D? Reilly or Tanev? Not winning a cup with them as your top two, not winning a cup after trading your best winger who drove play and was a defensive monster, not winning a cup when your best player and Captain is pulling an Elias Petterson from last year, they might score their way into the playoffs but this team is so so so far from being a cup contender and honestly I dunno where you're based but if you lived in Canada you would regularly subjected to the clown show that is Toronto media trying to rationalize how their delusions of having the American Mcdavid on their team were so wrong!
It appears no one in Hig Town is willing to tell us who made the decision to tear the C from Tavares and pin it on Mathews. Rose won’t tell…Yawn Kyper won’t leak it…if he knows. Both of these EXPERTS endorse EVERY move made by the Organization…they’re Fanboys. The fact that they did it speaks to how SERIOUS the were about WINNING…not very. Mathews is a perimeter player (albeit EXTREMELY gifted) who doesn’t engage, won’t hit, is very soft and isn’t a fierce competitor. He quits and doesn’t mind losing…enough. I believe Pelley made the call…a Hockey wouldn’t. It was bad enough Pelley made the decision…to move more Merch…in the first place but to have him floating around game after game with it STILL on his sweater is a disgrace. The Toronto Media gives this issue a very wide birth…they want to keep their access alive and well. It’s funny, I predicted this record in the summer and even said thevCiachnwould be fired by Christmas…it ended up being Marc Savard. With Rose’s Mitchy-Boy owning the puck, seeing the ice, making plays, creating opportunities and making sweat dishes to Captain Heartless…the PP isn’t as easy. Marc had no say in Pelley’s mishandling of Marner. The best player on the Team walked and the Organization got NOTHING in return. What a disgrace. Then the Fanboys got the message to crap on Mitchy-Boy, Rose called him a cancer…but he still moves Captain Heartless…he and Yawn Kyper have to.
People like to blame the players, which of course they are to blame, but let’s not forget the beyond horrible contracts, to Marner, Tavares (not the current one), Nylander and Matthews.
Some aged like cheap wine, others like milk, but all of them were overpaid from the get go, with giant bonuses, no trade lists, not long enough, you name it, with very very little concessions from the players if there was any. Those things are usually used to reduce the AAV in a negotiation, not given on top of an already extremely rich deal.
Those contracts, prevented the Leafs from acquiring any depth while they were at their best. Just imagine, having 1-2 million off each guys of the core 4/5, thats enough to have a decent middle 6 or a first pair D to play with Reilly.
Who are you ? All you "pundits" are saying the same things, over & over & over again. Turn off the broken record and accept the fact playing for the Leafs is a posion chalis for any player as the fans are NEVER satisfied !!!
It's just the Leafs being the Leafs. This IS their way. It has been since '67.
What do they say about repeated actions with hope of a different outcome?
Matthews to carolina
Be careful for what you wish for Toronto. You wanted Marner gone and here we are again
Daryl Sitler was a true leader and a tremendous player, this coming from a long time Habs fan
Tell the whole story Berube rescued Jordan Binnington from the minors where he was sent because he had an explosive temper and hatted to lose. He back stopped the Blues into the play offs with 2.46 GAA and in the play offs went 16 8 2 Saves 748 and 0.914. Berube got his players to respond, but there was also no legacy of privilege with the blues, that some TO players learned under Dubas's weak Management style. It is odd to me that some players think they get pay lots of money because they are good looking and put up numbers. Fans and owners, (Corp owners less so) want their players and team to play to WIN.
Auston a 2-way player? It seemed that he missed checking his assigned opposition player every time there was a goal given up.
Stop it with the losing the room BS. They are paid to play, is it in Nylander's Contract that he is not to be criticized for not back checking or forechecking? Does Mathews contract say he must have X amount of ice time to score, or just these players on the ice? Babcock, too mean, Dubas, too soft, Berube, not my friend? Where does it end, do they want their parents on the bench? The only thing different from last seasons first place in the Div finish and two rounds and not one, is MARNER, and the guy in charge, of that is Treliving. From what I understand he is a quasi Nepo hire. The team he built in Calgary is also a disaster.
Buffalo is the biggest disaster, lets be real. And the Canucks are competing hard with the Leafs now. And thats just recency bias, as at the start of the season the Flames were Canadas most embarrassing team.
But yes, the Leafs are embarrassing.
"Best team Toronto has had in the Matthews era"
Except when you had Marner, the best regular AND postseason player on Toronto, when you were first in the Atlantic.
Buckle up, Toronto is toast
Goaltending injuries can never be an excuse for the Maple Leafs because they chose to instead of having a front line number one goalie at 8 million a year, they chose to roll with 3 back ups who are all roughly the same caliber. Woll, Stolarz, and Hildeby are all roughly the same. None of them are a front line cup caliber goalie. Woll or Hildeby may some day DEVELOP into one, but none of them are there yet.
Disaster is synonymous with canadian teams and their fans.
The injury thing… ehhh… I know its there with the Leafs, but look at Tampa (among others)… but focus on the Bolts just for a moment. Vasy has been in and out and JoJo isn't exactly JoWoll. McD, Cernak and Hedman feel like they've barely played this year… Lilleberg is out til Feb… Hagel has been in and out, Point in and out and clearly playing injured… Cirelli in and out.. Kuch was injured, then stick then injured… think he's sick agian… Paul didn't lace em up till like 2nd week of November… and on and on… this team has been brutalized.
Here's the difference… even when the Bolts were at their worst for the injury bug… I never felt like they were phoning it in. Guentzal and Cirelli are always working their bags off. Moser and Raddysh decided to go from "who?" to one of the best defensive pairs in the league. New guys like D'Astous decided to say "I belong here".
Where is that in Toronto? You can't tell me the talent isn't there, even among the lower lineup guys.
I have, for many many moons, said… it's the voices in the room. It all flows from Matthews and Nylander. They lack the killer instinct and the appropriate amount of EFF YOU.
A player needs to prove themselves in the playoffs before big bucks hit the account.
Can't wait for the Nick Robertson trade. Hoping he lands in Washington
Quit quitting is exactly what they are doing.
You love to whine about the leafs don't ya
😂😂😂😂😂😂
The Leafs are a dumpster fire, full stop. Injured or not, Matthews has no heart and no drive whatsoever. He looks completely checked out and is a husk of what he used to be, especially without Marner. I remember the good ol’ days when star players didn’t make excuses. Remember the year when Steve Yzerman led the Red Wings to the cup while playing on a broken foot? Stevie didn’t make excuses.
Now I’m not saying that guys should deliberately play hurt. But it just goes to show how this generation of players differs from the greats of the past. As the second highest paid player in all the NHL, Matthews has zero excuse to be as checked out as he is. If his injury situation is as long-term and nagging as it allegedly is, FFS, shut him down and give him the time to recover properly at this point instead of the excuses. It’s clear the Leafs are not going to contend for a cup this year, let alone possibly not even make the playoffs, so why even bother.
Coaching is not the problem with this team. We went from Babcock to Keefe to Berube and the results are the same. They can’t say it’s Berube after last year’s playoff run either. Take that away, and you have your answer as to what’s wrong with this team.
