The Jackets should not have drafted Cayden Lindstrom 4 overall. "Cayden Lindstrom was indeed injured before the 2024 NHL Draft, suffering a back injury that significantly impacted his season and draft preparation. The injury, a herniated disk, began in October 2023 and worsened over time, leading to a hand injury in December and ultimately requiring surgery in November 2024.
Despite missing 36 games, Lindstrom was still selected fourth overall by the Columbus Blue Jackets."
What made it even more crazy is everyone and their mother knew some team was really going to want Ivan Demidov and the Jackets could have just traded 4 overall to the team that would give the most for Demidov. Even the stats of Cayden Lindstrom were not THAT impressive before the draft. Just based on stats alone he looked like a late first. I know that stats alone is not why he was drafted so high but combine that with the injury stuff and it was too risky.
Demidov, Zayne Parekh, Tij Iginla, Berkly Catton, and Cole Eiserman all had better stats. Only Demidov has proved himself in the NHL but I would have picked any of them over Lindstrom.
Now to be fair to the Jackets and Cayden Lindstrom that if he was fully healthy maybe he is way better but we are talking about the 4th overall pick here. There was a lot of trade down value and so much risk with the injuries.
Hearing Mears not be excited for the pens is still strange to me.
