Cowan is not the problem, he's a kid and requires mistakes to get better. Having to play in OT is actually the issue.
As a bruins fan, what that last segment tells me is that the Leafs scouting and pro scouting departments are phenomenal but the development team is horrible.

Teams don't win the cup by playing hard nosed/ greasy hockey, or being in a state with beneficial tax situation. That can help, but it's brilliant asset management that wins cups. It's why Florida has beat Edmonton in the cup final 2 years in a row. It all comes down to asset management. If the Oilers had Florida's management team they would have 2 cups with McDavid for sure, possibly more

Why doesn't McMann ever get any OT time? With his speed and shot, would seem like a obvious choice. Not playing a tired Matthews every other shift.

Cowan had the lowest icetime of all the Leafs forwards through 3 periods and took another bad offensive zone penalty and Berube puts him out on the ice in OT again….bad coaching. McMann is one of the fastest players in the NHL and with only three players on the ice during OT Berube leaves him on the bench. Frustrated Leaf fan.

It was bound to happen. Rebuilds are finishing (Montreal, Detroit, Buffalo) and the leafs keep losing talent and getting older. I don't see this changing for the next decade unfortunately. Those teams are young and have great young core pieces. Look at there D cores alone

If you have players struggling playing hurt its not helping the team or themselves!
