If you are going to blame Hakstol for the bad PP you at least need to give credit where due. He is largely responsible for the agressive forecheck we've seen from the Avs this year that has made them so dominant in 5v5.
The reality is that MacKinnon drives the bus for the PP. He always has. When he is in a rut the PP is also in a rut. His lack of effort and attention to detail on the PP is unacceptable, I don't give a damn that it's almost the Olympics. THIS is his full time job. Before doing anything else they need to start with benching Mac on the PP at least.
They also need some roster changes. Bare minimum they need a legit 3C and they could use a 7th D as well. Maybe a bottom 6 winger too. Outside of that, if you can find a solid replacement for Girard with size and skating ability, make that move. If not, at least get the other things.

Avs are a total embarrassment. Just take a look at their train wreck January results. Has Gabe's absence created this team failure?! Mac & Makar provide ZERO leadership & are quickly losing the respect of many. Will they return home "boasting" a 4-game losing streak? I haven't watched ANY of theses games because their historic "funks" are readily identifiable on the front ends. Why bother watching a bunch of guys half-a$$ing their way through games? And where is Jared Bednar in all of this? These characters have created quite a mess over the past month.
In what way did the Avs, other than Wedgie, “quit on themselves”?? It was essentially an evenly played game all throughout.
Avs are 4-6-2 during January with one game remaining. They have allowed 5+ goals 4x over their past 7 games. NO sympathy for anyone other than Gabe. Since MacKinnon's selfish behavior following the embarrassing P/O loss to Las Vegas in 2021, I have questioned his maturity & leadership. He is NOT captain material! Meteoric player, inconsistent performance. If winning a 2nd Cup is truly important to Mac, he needs to begin leading by the example of CONSISTENT play. This season could end badly for the Avs without major mental adjustments.
NO jerkwater trades. Avs have proven they can dominate with their existing roster. Player leadership & coaching effectiveness are the.key issues. WHY are so many guys mired in slumps right now?! Outside of 3 or 4 players, they can't depend on others to contribute on the scoresheet. We can only hope that the Olympics break will somehow refresh the team.
Not so long ago my wife had said to me that eventually the Av's would fall apart "because its what they always do". I gave her this big speech about how this year is different and clearly the team has matured beyond its mental up's and downs and they are locked in and playing as a solid unit. If we lose it is in small ways and that we are always competitive. They have a brilliant group of established players with amazing chemistry now and we had nothing to worry about. Then January happened. The "I told you so" stung more than usual this time.

The only players who escape criticism are Parker Kelly and Jack Drury. Or as Bailey calls them, A Parker Kelly and A Jack Drury.
This is one drawback of the Avs’ approach in relying on speed to transport the puck over extended areas of the ice…don't get me wrong- it's entertaining and wouldn't have it any other way but this leads to cumulative fatigue over time compared to other teams

If you divide Mack’s salary over the course of the season he makes over 150k per game. Must be nice to tune out and make in 20 minutes more than most people in a year.
