  1. Hope Ovi, signs on for another season. Canes just signed an extension with Brandon Bussi, let's go Canes!

  2. Ovi deserves to be on a day by day contract moving forward. If you want to play, play. If not, you earned your rest 🙃

  3. Ovi shot is still there and he is such an under rated passer, but man, his skating is putting the Caps at a disadvantage when he is on the ice, like a 4 on 5 each time. Though I like the way coach has managed his minutes.

  4. As of now, Ovechkin is only 292 points behind Gretzky’s assists total. Should he go for it? He probably needs only another 4 or 5 seasons, assuming no drop off.

  5. it took me a long time to realize that when you say "P.L." for PLD you aren't just brutally mispronouncing "Pierre"

  6. If Washington stumbles out of the Olympic break, is there any chance that they will trade Ovitchkin? Some Stanley Cup contenders might be willing to trade a boatload of prospects and draft picks for Ovi as a rental player, and that could power the Capitals through their upcoming rebuild much faster.

  7. The caps will make the playoffs and play the penguins. The caps will pick up a top 6 forward and Cole Hutson before the trade deadline.

  8. The GM has only been in the position since July 2024. Think he's safe but must do something to improve the team. He hasn't done much at the helm. Coach I would say safe for now. Will have to see how the team progresses post OV. OV wife has made it very clear, they want to move back to their homeland after his contract. I don't expect any expansion.

  9. I feel like I remember Ovi’s wife making a comment about him returning to Russia after his contract runs. Maybe I am mistaken.

Either way Ovi doesn’t have much to play for. He has the goals record. The legacy is cemented. He could construct a life sized statue of himself if he melted down all his individual awards.

  10. Ovechkin is a numbers guy. If he can get to 930-940 goals where a couple of 30-35 goal seasons would notch him 1000, he'll play 2 more years.

  11. I think people underestimate how important Dubois is for the Capitals. He was playing hurt for the first 6 games of the season, but he looks like he's fully healthy and ready to lead the Capitals into the top 3 in the Metro. Last season he was a 66 point #2C whose defense should have gotten more attention in the Selke conversation.

I would pick the Milano contract as their worst contract. Because if they put him on waivers, he would clear waivers. It's great when your worst contract is a 1.9 million pending UFA. If I had to pick a more expensive contract, I think the Chychrun contract is worse than the Dubois contract.

I think a Capitals vs Penguins matchup is quite likely. I would pick Washington to pass the New York Islanders for 3rd in the division.

Carbery is a great coach, but the Capitals really need to change their special teams. Especially their power play. They have a very stationary power play. They need to move around more. But it's hard when Carlson and Ovechkin are out there on the power play because they're both so slow.

Carbery also needs to stop putting Carlson and Chychrun out on the ice together. They're both great defensemen, but they're both weak on defense, with Carlson being too slow and Chychrun being prone to sloppiness. Carlson with Fehervary and Chychrun with Roy are great pairings, but Carlson with Chychrun gives me nightmares.

  12. Gretzky had 1016 goals in the regular season and postseason combined. Ovechkin has just 996. I don't think he'll score another 20 this season to pass Gretzky, but if he plays next season (which seems likely), it won't be any problem at all to score another 20 and pass Gretzky. I'm not sure why postseason stats don't count, but people seem to prefer it that way across all major sports.

  13. Shannon you're forgetting those offseason moves last season were done by Brian McLellan not Chris Patrick. Aside from what looks like a steal in Sourdif Patrick has done nothing

  14. Capitals might make it in because they like the Panthers have an easy remaining schedule.
Red Wings will probably fall out because they're showing fatigue with a youngish lineup and have a tough remaining sched.
NYI and Pittsburgh, maybe Bruins, also a threat to fall out. Canadiens i'd put in that spot too because i'm not sold on them, but they're a Canadian team, so will probably perform silly trades just to ensure a playoff spot.
If Capitals match up against the Canadiens again in round one, that's a great matchup for them. Any team is. Just a pretty significantly overrated team this season.

  15. For league minimum as a 4th line guy? Ok sure. As a $9.5m top line winger? No way. Washington needs the cap space and they need a faster more dynamic threat than current/older Ovechkin. It's why they've been aggressively trying to spend his salary cap space on a replacement that's already signed for next year. They want to be able to tell him they can't afford him. The reality is clear to anyone who watches him play these days, if he was ANYONE else, he wouldn't make an NHL roster. His skating is worse than a 4th line AHL goon. Caps have prospects and they need to open up playing time for them next season, can't do that if you're hanging on to the old guys. Carlson, Dowd too. Washington has to get younger.
