I'm happy the Hughes Bros. stepped in and defended him! The man was smiling and happy and the interviewer even prefaced his question, which I KNEW was gonna get asked, with something like "don't mean to…" like dude let him live a minute! 😄 I was honestly surprised the question was asked so quick and not by Toronto media.
Best thing about this is Mitch Marner is still a loser !!
As a leafs fan straight up, we have never ever seen Matthews this happy with his smile the way he talks his whole emotion. He’s never been like that at any point in his career hopefully he can bring his vibe into the leafs locker room.
Of course I cheered for Canada to win the gold but it’s hard to be mad at the US when they act with class and gratitude. Bringing out Goudreau’s kids and celebrating with his sweater was a nice tribute. I wish Canada had won but I still like Mathews and respect his play.

Austin won the gold medal, that was his goal. And he achieved that goal. Why would US hockey fans not be happy? As a Leaf fan, he still has a job to do here and he has still NOT achieved that. One was for pride and one is for millions of dollars. He achieved the one where he didn't get paid. Let that sink in for all hockey fans regarding every hockey player. Now tell me about how getting paid a gazillion dollars to play for an NHL team is what makes you a winner…

How about trying this strategy as leaf fans : get off the guys back, embrace Auston as the great player he is, be greatful that he actually WANTS to play in the pressure cooker that Toronto is. Isn't is obvious to fans yet that dumping on players continously actually doesn't work.
I really don’t think Toronto fans will ever be satisfied what their top players do, good or bad. . It takes a whole team to win and not three or four players.

I like and believe in Matthews but can't imagine remaining a leafs fan if Mathews doesn't lose his C for going to the Whitehouse to visit the criminal who threatens our sovereignty and attacks our economy. As an honoured representative of our team and City, it would be the ultimate betrayal.

Congratulations to Matthews and Co for their gold medal win. I wanted Canada to win, but it was a great game and Hellebuyck stood on his head. He needed a win, too, because Winnipeg loses in the playoffs every year just like the Leafs, so good for him.
That said, Matthews earlier this season hasn't been his usual awesome self. It looked like he had an injury, so if that's done with now that hopefully he brings this level of compete back to the Leafs when he rejoins the team.
Toronto fans will drive him back to the US, he won;t resign again. Best thing that may happen is McDavid signs with his dream team Leafs in couple years. But I doubt the Leafs will able to do anything to help McDavid win here either, let alone Matthews. All well. There's always playing Solitaire on my phone.
NHLers and other professional hockey players should not be able to be in the Olympics. This should be the rule for all professional sports and their players, involving not being able to participate in the Olympics.
Have to give Matthews credit, while he didnt light up the scoreboard as often as is expected, his defensive play was really good. Let him enjoy his moment in the sun. One other thing, 3 on 3 overtime is stupid junk hockey for such a important tournament and it sucks large, play 5 on 5 for however long it takes for one team to find the net…
This is why professional athletes should not compete in the Olympics. If they want to play best on best, develop their own tournament.
At the very least, I am happy for Auston Matthews. However, before the final game against Canada, you notice in the game. Matthews did not register a single point in the match against Slovakia, despite the USA scoring six goals. The last two games saw a decline in scoring, but he did record one assist in the game against Canada (yesterday – Finals). In the earlier games against weaker opponents like Germany, he scored the majority of his points.
If the management doesn't go on a fire sale, Leafs are definitely making the playoffs. Its happening. This is the biggest turnaround you will see from this Matthews era Leafs team. Just watch.

As a Canadian when I heard that reporter ask him that question post game about Toronto. I was so embarrassed as a proud Canadian. You don't ask anyone that type of question right after winning a gold medal on a different stage. I thought the question was scum bag. Ask him when he's back in Toronto. He had on the “c” but did not lead them to gold. He was elevated by the people around him. Proof of this will be shown when he returns to the leafs. Congrats to Auston Matthews, he played well both defensively and offensively. Being a Hockey Captain requires more responsibilities on and off the ice in which he proved that in his quiet nature.
It's Apples and Oranges to compare the Leafs to the USA Olympic Team. It would have been better for overtime to be 5 vs 5 instead of 3 vs 3, but of course due to Olympic Time Constraints it was not possible.
