To answer your question, we should not be buyers this season. We need to sell off on some of our pending UFAs and call it a day. Reload in the offseason.

I love the idea of selling brutal assets at the trade deadline and not going all in, I prefer we miss playoffs to fully rest and really push the remaining 2 years of mcdavids contract & retool in summer with a TON of cap.
I agree with you, this is not their year. I think they will still squeak into the playoffs but likely a first or 2nd round exit. They are no where near Vegas and Colorado. A trade of any quality is going to be really hard- especially Nurse, who is the biggest liability on this team – player and salary. How he is still wearing an A is beyond me. And, unfortunately the core is getting older, Nuge, Hyman, and Ek are past their prime- still good players but not as effective each year- look at their stats. I feel so bad for McDavid!
They have to go all in because next year isn’t going to be any better and then McD is going to be going somewhere else to try and win a cup.

I heard this guy speak last night in an interview, and it's like he still hasn't realized he's a professional hockey player earning over $5 million a year. His response is that he needs to practice more to improve and grab a few more rebounds so he doesn't leave pucks loose. This is an insult to a world-class team that has the best player in the world and maybe the second-best in the top 10. He needs to do better NOW. I find the interviews he gives extremely disrespectful; he doesn't even stand up to answer the media.
Best thing for the organization is to NOT make the playoffs. That will, hopefully, force Katz to do some house cleaning starting with Jackson all the way down.

i'm not implying Bowman is legacy chasing, but if he were to let this season go I think that'd mark a major stain on his career, I think he's likely to keep pushing, whether or not it pays off is another question.
I genuinely believe he's done a ton of good for the Oilers look regenerating our prospect pool, but there are some things he can not do, like changing existing players contracts ect.

If Florida was killing it again this year and not in the same boat if not worse off then Edmonton, I’d put more blame on the actual team itself, but they’re both struggling they have played so much hockey these past two years, they’re tired, let this season play out as it will zero expectations, hopefully they can rest up in the off season and come back stronger next year, 26/27 Stanley cup champs!
My first thought was the season is done and I sadly believe it is. There may be miracle trades ahead, but barring that I think it is game over.

So first of all, I think the team should just play it out, I think it would be foolish going after more rentals, I feel like they've done that a lot, and they aren't gonna find a move that significantly adresses their problems. They may have to retool on the fly a bit this offseason.

the fact that they went out and got Jarry this year puts them in a bad spot and forces them to go all in this year. the correct move would have been to stick with Skinner, bring up Ingram and then get a real true starter during the offseason. But being an Oilers fan for so long, i do not expect this management to do anything smart, they make mistakes and double down on them

Eh, don't go crazy all in, but don't give up on the season. Our next two years are the biggest swings given the cap space. So see what we can do, but with an eye on the next two seasons.
1. Move Mangiapane as we don't want him on the books next year anyway.
2. Try to offload Henrique and Janmark (mostly solves itself if we cant by end of season).
3. In place of those three players beef up PK and bottom 6 with forwards, i liked max jones on our fourth line honestly with Lazar, so there is that option, can call back up Samanski. Our top 6 is good, Nuge, Mcdavid, Hyman, Podz, Drai, Roslovic, and we have good bottom 6/middle 6 pieces that can slot into the top 6 if needed. Savoie, Kapanen, i think Freddy is improving, and i really like Lazar, Samanski back up, our forwards don't look too bad. Offloading those three, as long as we focus on bringing back decent PKers, will be a boon. Need to extend Roslovic though, not sure if he will want to stay if we give up on the season.
4. Nurse to 3rd pair LD, Walman to 2nd pair LD. These guys both look defensively iffy, but Walman has higher offensive upside and is playing on his offside so may improve on the left. We can do as we have done with Bouch and try to pair Walman with a shut down defensive Dman.
5. Pick up a 2nd pair shutdown RD, might mean offloading Regula, and keep Stastney as the 7th, or the other way around. I like Stastney though.
6. So then Nurse 3rd pair LD with Emberson RD. I think Emberson is low key improving his puck moving, and seems a sensible reliable player. Nurse… yeah it sucks he gets paid as much as he does, but he is beneficial sometimes.
7. Give Ingram some more leash, i just like how it feels with him in net, and we need to know if we are extending him or not.
Essentially offload Mangiapane, Henrique, Janmark, and one of Regula or (hopefully not) Stastney. Bring in a middle 6/bottom 6 forward that can PK, and try to get a shut down RD (that can PK) with the what…. 8-9 Mil in cap space we have from offloading those three. Fill the gaps with pieces from Bakersfield. If we can't do that reliably this season, wait til the offseason.
We have decent pieces, and lots down in Bakersfield. Yesterday absolutely sucked, but its not like we need a rebuild. See if we can make tweaks this year without panicking like with Jarry.
