  1. Not gonna lie…whenever I see a story about the Canes on YouTube, Urinating Tree's "Canes Man" character pops into my brain.
With, of course, "Brass Bonanza" playing in the background.
    Go figure.😊

  2. As a Canes fan, here’s my take…
This is a team whose window to compete is going to last a long time. They don’t really have any big/anchor contracts, they have pretty much every key contributor (minus Alexander Nikishin who I’m confident will get his) under contract for years, and they still have plenty of ammo to be in on every deal.
Their biggest weakness right now is a multitude of overlapping problems in the Top 6. They’re severely undersized, they lack elite scoring talent (unless Andrei Svechnikov can stay hot and have extended success for the first time in years), and they don’t have an actual 2C on the roster. And it’s becoming clear, whether it’s warranted or not, that the amount of superstars that want to play here is extremely limited (whether that’s related to the market or the system we run).
We have built ourselves possibly the highest floor in the league, but it’s going to take some specific circumstances and moves to get over the hump.

  3. Svech didn't make the Olympics because Russia couldn't field a team. (Imagine a healthy Kochetkov and Svech on a roster with guys like Ovi and Vasilevsky).

A bummer, for sure, but it means that he was the first on the list that isn't currently in Italy on International duties (instead of Ghost Bear).

I'm just proud to be a Hurricanes fan these days. I distinctly remember my fandom being the butt of many a joke over a decade ago when the popular line was that Carolina was getting relocated to the desert to become what would be the Vegas Golden Knights…no one name drops the Canes for relocation these days.

  4. They'll do what they also do. Take a million low percentage shots, play against a team in the 2nd or 3rd round that has an elite goalie, who laughs at their low percentage shots and they'll get knocked out

  5. Very well rounded team! But, may just be missing that edge and player that can take over when the other team throws everything at them. Would love to see them come out of the East. (Besides the Red Wings…but they hurt me too much)

  6. I wonder if their low number of blocked shots is related to the fact that the have the lowest shots/against avg in the league.

  7. With the compressed schedule, Carolina is the perfect team for this attrition fest. If you're leaning too hard on your big stars, instead of strong depth to get through games those stars are going to burn out and/or break. If they're really talented they even get to play some extra games at the Olympics (Carolina still ended up sending 3 players).

The biggest surprise is just how good Carolina is at drafting and developing their next players. Even when they're a Final Four playoff team they manage to be in the top 3rd for prospect pools in the NHL. It's even more amazing when in one of their recent seasons they didn't even have a farm team.

  8. We will know in the playoffs. If it is the same shit as the past however many years, where they don't up their physicality, they continue to play dump and chase, and allow Aho to get smothered – it will be no dice, yet again.

  9. They can’t get over the hump. This year will be no different. They can’t get the formula right, where they get hot at the right time: just before the Playoffs begin.

  10. I’m curious others’ opinions: would you rather your team win a Stanley Cup every 10 years but miss the playoffs the other 9 years, or be ultra competitive and make the playoffs every year and sometimes deep runs but never win a Cup?

  11. That "last in blocked shots" is at least partially explained by a 58.4% Corsi at 5 on 5. When you don't allow a lot of shot attempts, there aren't a lot of shots to block. And when you spend 45.2% of your TOI in the O-zone, and just 36.4% in the D-Zone, you don't have to block a ton of shots. And the ones they do give up, their goaltending is doing the job to get the win anyway. Especially Bussi. That guy was a find, wasn't he?
