They simply waited until all of China knew they needed to trade those players, then had no leverage when time ran out.
I'm no fan of dreger, but what he said is objectively true in this situation. Toronto has several downsides that compete against the luxurious treatment they provide for their players, and that luxury advantage is not that big when put up against the majority of the rest of the league.

Jesse is absolutely right that you want this year's pick to go to Boston. If you keep this pick, but then you are still bad next year, you have two consecutive years where you don't own your own pick. That's two consecutive years where you could be a bottom 5 team and pass your pick to an eastern conference rival. If the leafs pick like 10th this year that hurts to give up. But it gives them way more flexibility down the line.

Berbue isn't a bad coach, 1st year as the Leafs coach proves it but his style doesn't fit the players. You got to coach to your strengths not to how you want to play.
Anyway, don't hire a GM or coach just because they have a stanle cup. History says it's near impossible for a gm or coach to win a cup with more than 1 team. Look it up we are talking about Bowman and Rufferford
Tre and Bérubé will and should both be fired the second the season ends. All these players should have been traded a eeek ago. They have screwed the pooch two years in a row.

I do find it somewhat interesting that none of you got similarly angry when Dubas also never traded away UFA players at the deadline and often traded away future for more UFA rentals.
That said, I agree with pretty much everything you are saying … though I would probably weld the doors shut with the front office inside and then burn the place to the ground.

There's no quick retool here. The GM isn't capable of rebuilding this team, so get used to being disappointed for quite a while.

You guys talk about Keith Pelley far too much. He is a business guy only. He is not part of the Hockey operations nor was he hired to be. Your last point about him running 6 teams is stupid. You are saying it as if he is in charge of sports operations of those teams… He's not. He is the President of the Business operations of MLSE. Idk if you guys know this, but mega corporations do tend to only have one President.
