Bottom line – you have to play the games.
Any fool who puts the Pens at 86% hasn't looked at their schedule. It's BRUTAL for them. I put their chances at 25%. Meanwhile, the Isles have just 2 or 3 games against opponents with more wins than the Isles have.
These playoff odd things are dumb – specifically in hockey where things change every night.
The hockey guy just quoted a source that said the islanders have the BEST odds of making the playoffs in the eastern conference, who knows?
Pittsburgh is hanging in there without Crosby and Malkin and are still 4th in power play percentage. Sunday's game vs Columbus will tell a lot and they also have a game in hand and a better power play. Computer models also favor momentum with Columbus 16-2-4 over the last 22 games. The Islanders are 13-9. Columbus getting loser points has been an advantage over the Islander's regulation losses. Chatgpt: Islanders fans often find this frustrating, because teams built like the Islanders (defense + goaltending) sometimes outperform models in the playoffs, even if analytics don’t love them during the regular season.
The upcoming games are CRUCIAL for all teams involved.
Isles play Toronto, should be an easy win (but they just beat the Wild, then again so did the Rags… so maybe the Wild took their foot off the pedal)
Pens play Colorado. ABSOLUTE MUST LOSE for the Pens.
And Columbus plays Carolina another MUST LOSE
If the Pens and Blue Jackets start beating those top 10% teams we are gonna have a VERY difficult road to the playoffs.
Rittich just beat the flames (who he has never beat before playing for us) and we somehow have the worst odds.
COLUM-PUSS AND ARMPITTS-BURG ARE BOTH DUE FOR A DUMP AND WERE DUE FOR I NICE RUN
Their odds are 54% is because we have so many home games still to go
The Islanders are 20th in the league in Goals For and 29th in the league in Goals Against, their power play ranks 30th in the league by margins so slim that they could conceivably finish last. The Islanders have had a great season…played far above expectations…but if they miss the playoffs…those stats will be the reason, and although I get Mitch's hyperbolic fandom, for someone who constantly quotes stats, that he just ignores those three critical categories is just astonishing.
On Money Puck as of today, these are the odds to make the playoffs: Pittsburgh 77.8%, Isles 70.9%, CBJ 68.6%.
Bottom line im farting.
The Pens have many more RW which is the first tiebreaker, that has to be reason they have a better chance of making the playoffs. CBJ not sure about other than the game in hand?
Going to the game v Columbus on Sunday 3/22 – gonna be a fun one!
The experts who came up with these percentages could over think making a peanut butter & jelly sandwich
