Losing a Hall of Fame defenseman and a stout defensive defenseman, inconsistent goaltending, and aging fast. Hertl, Stone, Karlsson, McNabb, Smith, and Pietrangelo are very much on the other side of their primes at this point. Barbashev, Theodore, Eichel, Hanifin, Marner, and Andersson are all 29-30 so there isn’t really going to be much more those guys can ascend. There are no first round picks coming, so they’re at the point now where age is finally going to bite them.

I really feel Karlsson and Pietrangelo been on LTIR and trading Whitecloud affected their makeup way more than they want to admit. I think this has just been a case where the high-end acquisitions have lost the low-end core that established their foundation in the past.

Why? Loss of positional coaches from the Cup year. Players may not also believe in the scheme or message of Cassidy anymore either. They leave their struggling Goalies out to die as well.
They play SLOW & FAT; no effort, no real chemistry too. Just a group, not team of several big names.
