DuPont looks like a potential franchise-tier defenseman, but putting “better than Makar” on anyone this early is a huge bar. Makar didn’t just arrive with hype, he changed playoff series and became one of the best transition/offensive D-men in the world. DuPont may have that ceiling, but ceiling isn’t the same as outcome. If he hits, I’d expect “game-breaker in his own way” more than “next Makar 2.0.”

He looks pretty great right now, he’s so smooth and fun to watch. But terms like “generational talent” get thrown around a lot these days, looking like the pretty safe 2027 1st overall pick for sure right now though, and definitely has potential to hit that upper echelon of defensemen.

  3. This is an impossible question.  Does he look like he will be the next big thing?  Yep.  Will he stay on that trajectory over the next 18-24 months and then will his game translate to the NHL seamlessly.  That is still up in the air.  Based on what I have seen of him, which is a few live games and highlights, he will be an NHL d-man, no question.  Top 4 also probably as close to a guarantee as you could have….but elite, generational or better than Makar let’s wait and see

He’s listed at 6ft tall which I have a hard time believing. I have seen him in ice recently. He might be a bit undersized to be honest. Very talented player though. Will be interesting to watch. My money says he will not be a Makar level player.

  5. The engines will run so smooth. I’ve been a DuPont man my whole life and I swear by the stuff. Better than any of those other lubrican…..

    OH THE PLAYER.

Depends on how the Leafs use him and who his d-partner is

It’s really hard to gauge right now. With the change in the CHL and NCAA hockey and such a massive migration of talent in both directions, it’s hard to really judge these kids right now. We’ll just have to wait and see.

What a dumb question to ask before he’s even draft eligible

  9. Lost-Bug8910

He will be one of the NHL players of all time, thats for sure.

Live down the road from Everett and watch him often. He’s a stud in the W but he’s 16 and playing against teenagers.

Definitely lots of potential but it’s hard to say what the impact on the NHL will be for a player who is closer to puberty than draft eligibility. Lots of “generational talents” don’t have the same impact in the show that they had in juniors.

Don’t get me wrong, he’s highly skilled and entertaining and I hope he succeeds. I’m just not ready to make NHL predictions.

The part I don’t understand is how guys of similar stature on defense (specifically the Hutson brothers) aren’t as highly touted despite being extremely gifted players and showing that at a young age, yet DuPont has been giving 1st overall status for the same skill set. He’s playing in the WHL and did so at a high level as an underager, I understand that. Is his defensive game ahead of where the Hutson boys were? Just interesting to see the difference in perception

I think there is Hughes/Makar impact. Then Shaffer, then the drop off. I wouldn’t expect as much as those 3. That doesn’t belittle what he can do.

Love my Silvertips! Dupont is fun to watch and excited to see him in the league one day

  14. Whichever team drafts him will be the biggest factor determining his trajectory and destiny.

Bad management can easily turn a star player into a basket case of wasted talent on a team that isn’t going anywhere.

Can we talk about how brilliant that jersey design is for a hot second?

  16. TheIdentifySpell

It depends on how fast he is moving as he passes through the atmosphere.

  17. Makar-ian levels.

This kid looks very, very special.

  18. He has a long way to go before that question can be answered!

No idea too much hockey in between to say exactly who a 16 year old will be. Just be happy he’s good!
