  1. What the actual hell are the Fish Sticks thinking with this timing?

  2. SillyMikey

They lost 4 in a row, so I guess they didn’t like the tendency.

  3. matthew_sch

So their solution to address the goalie situation where Roy over-relied on Sorokhin is to bring in a guy notorious for fucking over his goalies? Got it

  4. He must’ve really lost the room to get fired like three weeks before the playoffs 😂

  5. GODDAMNIT now we’re gonna lose to the Isles in a 7 game SCF aren’t we?

  6. Fireinthehole13

The NHL is like the Hotel California of sports for coaches. You can check in but you can never leave.

I don’t know why an organization would do this. They’ve had a bad stretch but they’re in 3rd. I hope they lose every game from here onwards, this is foolish.

What an incredibly STEW PEED decision by Islanders management.

  9. Firing your coach before the playoffs, so hot right now.

  10. Seems a bit harsh to fire a coach of a team that was on the brink of making the playoffs with a fairly average roster … while in the most competitive conference in maybe modern NHL history

Why do organizations in general, make bad moves ? x. x

  12. kovacro_77

Thought he did a pretty darn good job with that club this season, especially the way he used/worked Schaefer into the system. Seems harsh.

There goes the season. Disappointing to read this.

Ilya Sorokin! Welcome to the trade block and free agency!

  15. Wow did not see this coming! IMO they out performed where everyone thought they would be.

  16. LoL. the guy who bitched about his goalie in Minnesota?

  17. PrairieSportsBall

Patrick Roy, you are a Toronto Maple Leaf.

We’ve seen worse. In 2006-07, I remember Claude Julien getting fired from the Devils in April with 3 games remaining in the season while being first in their division, because supposedly Lamoriello thought the team was not focused or prepared enough for the playoffs. That was next level crazy.

Also in 2009, Carbonneau was fired march 9 while the habs were fifth in the conference, and finished the season second in their division. The season before habs had finished 1st in the eastern conference under Carbo.

  19. Trash organization. Hope Schafer pulls a Tavares.

I don’t get all the DeBoer love. After the way he treated Otter when the ship went down in Dallas, I’d be very wary hiring him if I was a GM or Owner.

Makes sense I love Roy but he sucks as a coach, I was watching the Islanders get beat by the Habs and buddy was a horrible vibe behind the bench, totally silent, furrowed brow, pinching the bridge of his nose like he can’t take it no more

    This mentality cannot hold forever.

There’s 32 teams and that number is only going to go up. There’s only one Stanley Cup. And even if they mess around with the playoff format there’s a finite amount of playoff spots and most teams aren’t going to make the playoffs.

Even if every team in the league is playing transcendently perfect flawless hockey… a lot of teams aren’t going to make the playoffs and only one is going to win the Cup.

Firing coaches when your team is in a playoff position in a league where any team that makes it into the playoff can make a deep playoff run (we’ve had plenty of « Wildcard team goes on a run » moments in the recent years) is just so silly to me.

And there’s not some unlimited supply of NHL quality coaches we can just burn through, which is why it just seems to be teams swapping coaches around more than anything.

By some people’s logic 31 Coaches should be fired every season.

And round and round we go.

God forbid anyone gives a successful minor league coach a try, lets just keep recycling the trash.

Well Roy has failed at two teams, so who picks him up this offseason?

  24. KzooRichie

Roy and especially Lemieux are two of my most despised players ever.

  25. hockeynoticehockey

I thought Patty was looking awfully tired when they played Montreal. His leadership stye is « passion », and there’s only so long that will motivate a team. He looked like he was doing the coaching version of mailing it in.

  26. seymourbuttz214

Haha so pulling the goalie with 8mins left in the period isn’t the play? Because it worked so well what the 10x I’ve seen him try it, and I never watch the islanders play haha

  27. themerkle657

How does this guy keep getting jobs?!? Ask San Jose, Vegas, and Dallas how this will go…

  28. jeffster1970

Good for the Islanders. He was the coach for the OHL Kitchener Rangers which won the Memorial Cup in 2003. That’s highest trophy in Canadian minor hockey, so very hard to get.
