  1. So glad the oilers didn't take this guy. They decided to go with a good coach instead.

  2. if anything the flyers WILL NOT be a soft team anymore. There my team but they have been soft the last few years. Easy to play against. Torts wont have that!

  3. Playtime is over in Philly. Time to get serious. If the Flyers are your team, isn’t that what you want?
Seems to me the ones complaining are the potential problem, not him.

  4. i think he should of went to pitsburgh they need a change and i think the players are getting too comfortable will there head coach sullivan theres a bunch of players that needs to go such as malkin hes slowing the team down big time im sure they could get a few young guns, and release a big chunk of salary

  5. Big changes coming in Philly. Torts is a lame-duck coach GM's use when they know their own jobs on the line, and they need time to try and right the ship.
His shelf-life is usually 1 or 2 seasons. Either Clarke will fix it in that time, or he knows he's gone.

  6. if I didn't know any better I would have thought he's from philly. I like him. He seems like a good fit. Philly has always been a tough gritty city and the flyers gotta reflect that and I think he can do it.

  7. Canucks fan here. Torts didn't work out well here but I think he's a great fit for Philly. Wishing your team an enviable turn around.

  8. Congratulations Mr. Tortorella.
It's gonna be an interesting year in Philadelphia. All the very best!

  9. Torts is the coach you hate when he's not with your club but, and I'm as shocked as anyone to say this, but I think I like him for this job right now. Some of the things that he's said already including that Philly needs to be tough to play against have really got me interested in the next few seasons.

  10. I think TORTZ is an excellent coach and I love his humour. A very interesting and colourful person. He knows how to drive players. No room for slackers in his lineup. You better put out an honest effort or else. I’m just disappointed the JETS didn’t try for him but not surprising with the current ownership and management…..

  11. Seriously. Having Tort's back in the league is a positive. Thanks to Tort's and his family for giving back to every community that John has coached in. This guy only demands hard work from his players and is not a sound byte. He has won wherever he has coached and helped anyone who has needed it. Sure, sometimes he'll boot someone in the backside, but the result is a better player and man. We can all learn something from this man and his methods.

  12. As a Habs fan, I always hated the Flyers. But since torts is coaching them, I might start cheering for them.

  13. Most people praising him in the comments are probably the same ones who have been shitting on him for the last decade.

  14. Congratulations Philly. I luv Torts. He also will be a large presence in your community. I'm a red wing fan and really excited about our new coach, Derek lalonde, too.

  15. This is probly the best move Philly has made since Mr Snyder passed away. Mr Snyder would love this move with Holmgren. Hockey fans should watch 24 7 flyers rangers again. Best Media series the NHL ever Had. They better tie em tight and start with road work now. the flyers are gonna be a contender again . Mark this date

  16. I'm not even specifically a Flyers fan, but a hockey fan (sounds lame: my apologies) and a logic fan (look at my username, for instance), and that's why I love Torts & would consider myself a "Torts fan". I have friends that I used to play the NHL video games online with that were all Flyers fans, though, so I'd be happy for them (so I'm a transitive Flyers fan, I guess), but really I just like competition.

But to go back to the logic part, I love how Torts talks about why he does certain things (admitting to mistakes, as well), for example that he's hard on you because he cares about you, as both an athlete and a person, and his job is to push you as hard as he can to make you the best of both (because that's what all games (from a Game Theory perspective, to get academic) of skill require, whether it be hockey or life or anything else that requires pushing yourself to perform at your best (because everyone else is trying to be the best, as well) and fully admits there will be conflicts (and that's actually where the bonding will take place and you'll have guys like Hartnell essentially praising him (including the admission and apology Torts gave when he didn't actually have evidence of Hartnell being out of position; there's that honesty again), although of course Hartnell is one of the coolest and kindest off-ice players ever (I didn't see him much on the ice despite having NHL.tv with a VPN over the last decade and watching multiple games, so that's why I don''t comment on it too much other than to say I respect him; I never saw him embellish or anything like that), despite being benched for the first time on that Splittin' Chiclets interview (IIRC) after 1000+ games, after which he goes on to score 4 goals in 5 games (and jokes that people say, "what coatching!" but there is some truth to that, whether you're conscious of it or not; at the level of the NHL and the nature of games of skill/sports, it's hard to determine why, when seemingly doing the same thing, yields positive results when other times it doesn't, so again, perhaps that was due to the coaching).

It's funny going back to proofread this after making a comment down below ;-).

I really think his "track record," his candidness about his maturity, his logic & diction in the way he describes why he does certain things, his admission of mistakes & the need to evolve as a coach & learn from the players, and other reasons will make him a great coach and I look forward to seeing that beautiful P-based emblem (which could say for more than just "Philadelphia" – even just generally "playing" or "players" or "puck", "positive", "performance," "perservearance", "persistence", "pugnacity", "powerful", "prick" (like the annoyance of plants (not a word I will put in quotes , unless it's poison(ous) (I won't put this in quotes, as it could be misinterpretted) ivy or something else with irritation -;-)) with it), but not players (another one, but I already quoted it) being assholes necessarily (maybe on the ice)), "perplexing", "poise", and the dictionary & thesaurus can keep coming up with more) with those motion marks behind it, to indicate fast-flying, high-"pace," optimal performance (another word I already quoted).

That emblem could create an allitation like "Philadelphia players poised to play with and off the puck with passion, pugnacity, persistence, and perserverance with high pace, pushing, plugging away, and punching & pricking you powerfully with structure, physicality, & finesse, the price to press opponents to pay the piper for poor presence, producing a positive point percentage and complete the period of play penned "playoffs", projecting their protective paraphernalia (sounds like something Doc Emerick would say, eh?) producing percipitation prior to posession of the polished prize, passionate fans passengers to the passage."

Sorry that was contrived with some repitition (and could most certainly be improved), but I'm quite pleased (yeah…you're all semantically satiated with any "P" word now, I'm sure haha) for the Flyers and wish them (including Torts) & their fans optimal success.

I only just now got back into hockey after watching for years (I remember rooting for Arturs Irbe and I still marvel at Pavel Datsyuk, which reminds me of Claude Giroux, but unfortunately I haven't been following much these last few years due to COVID-19 and a few other things so it's a shame (it seems to me, but I am ignorant) to see that he is no longer a Flyer and I'll have to look more into that.

I'm excited for you Flyers fans! A more mature Torts (one who apologizes for saying "s***" at a press conference (just a highlight. Sorry to be repitious, but he speaks so eloquently & just generally well, imo, admitting his faults such as wanting an offensive-minded assistant coach because he's not that offensively creative, that he has & will continue to make mistakes, that he doesn't know much about the goalie position when asked about Bobrovsky's great play (while saying things that basically sum up performance of a goalie))) should make for a force with which to be reckoned.

  17. Torts is 673 wins and 541 losses and 37 ties in his coaching career with the New York Rangers, Tampa Bay Lightning, Vancouver Canucks and Columbus Blue Jackets. 1 cup in about 20 years. Don't hold your breath.
