More to this story hockey insider says Larkin wants out because he is sick of hearing sissy journey music at their hockey games makes wings look like a bunch of little girls to have music playing where the lead singer pees sitting down !!!
Yzerman is on a lifetime deal that's the only LOGICAL reason he still has not been canned yet. If this was any other GM they'd have been dumped at least 2 seasons ago.
I remember Dale McCourt, Ted Lindsay's bane. Kid came in, had a great rookie campaign, the Wings made the playoffs, beat Atlanta in round one, played Montreal tough in round 2, "Aggressive Hockey Is Back In Town" became the motto. Then Ted, an inexperienced GM, signed FA Rogie Vachon to play goalie and all hell broke loose. The league awarded McCourt to LA in compensation for the wings signing Vachon, McCourt didn't want to go to LA and sued to stay in Detroit, the team chemistry became a mess, Vachon was nowhere near the goalie he had been, and within a couple years Ted was gone. Could something like that happen in this case if Stevie botches this deal?
I admit, I was super pumped when I heard the Captain was coming back to Detroit. I live in Tampa and saw first hand the job he did helping to build a Cup winner. It just hasn't clicked in Detroit. Part of it was the BS lottery system screwing the Wings (I still think Bettman, who has always had a hard on for the Wings rigged those) but most of it falls on bad FA signings and bad trades. Yzerman was given a ton of slack, and he did come into a bad situation, but so did Devellano, a lot worse in fact, and while it took him a long time to win a Cup the Wings did make the playoffs five times in the 1980s. Stevie stuck with he wrong coach for way too long and he never developed a home grown goalie to act as a long-term anchor. The game still boils down to stars being stars when it matters and solid net play. The Wings have been deficient in both. As much as I hate to say it, it's probably time for the Wings to go outside of the "family" and bring in a fresh, young guy with a new approach. Sometimes the game just passes people by.
Stevie will always be The Captain to me and while I was around to see Gordie at the end of his run, #19 remains the best Wings player of my lifetime (well, him and Nick). I don't blame Larkin, but one thing to consider; during all these late season swoons he has worn the C and been there for all of it. He's a good player, but he doesn't seem to be much of a leader. I just hope they get someone decent in return.
The one thing I would hate to see, and it is a stupid STUPID…VERY STUPID idea would be to package a player like Raymond in a deal. That is possibly the most ignorant thing I've ever heard this costa guy say, and he has said a lot of dumb sh*t. Why would they do that? To make the playoffs a couple times…maybe? The last thing this team needs is to shed talent. You deal Larkin if he doesn't want to be here then you move on. You don't add to the problem by being a total dumb f-k. How this guy got his job remains a mystery to me.
I'd give it to Mo Seider
Larkin + Debrincat for Wyatt Johnston boom
stupid take
“He gave ten years”. Stop it. He’s not a martyr. He makes millions of dollars and no one forced him to sign an 8-year deal in 2023. Zero points in nine games to close the year last year. And before you say “he was hurt!” He had two five-on-five goals all year. Stop.
