I live in Vancouver and what always happens is they go on a big losing skid and then they beat Arizona or another bottom team and all the fans think the problems are solved. They also forget they finished behind Ottawa last year so they aren't cup contenders suddenly.
Although he would never divulge, the person with the most interesting and perhaps accurate take on this whole debacle is Trevor Linden.

It’s more than a complete rebuild for Vancouver, and it’s more than just management. The sheer amount of disappointment that the Canucks had demonstrated is a Legacy of Failure in itself.

best thing with Larscheid , apart from great radio voice and laugh , was he would dig in to players that were just not good players. No filter or Canuck rules for a positive spin on everything.

One of the reasons a Canadian team hasn't won a cup since 1993 is the perception, real or imaginary, that a fanbase in the Great White North will not stomach a full and serious rebuild done right. So GMs here are always looking for the quick fix just to get back into the playoffs and we've seen the results of that. Edmonton and Toronto got lucky in that they managed to score some high draft picks in draft years that included superstars, otherwise they'd be in the doghouse just like Vancouver. There's so much pressure to succeed yesterday, especially as we get further and further away from '93, that I don't know if it's even possible to run a team properly. Glen Sather in the 80s couldn't run a Canadian team under these conditions.
The biggest problem with the Vancouver Canucks is that they don't need to win. Like the Leafs. They can lose and still sell out the season.
Not sure how you fix that. They brought in Messier to fix it. It almost worked.

What a boils down to is that one guys are good on other teams and they shine as soon as they start having a little trouble Vancouver trades and brings them over thinking they're going to help them but the fact is they're getting all the guys that are on the way down they have no talent and they keep bringing in no talent and Benning has no idea what he's doing he should be fired and he should've been fired 5 or 6 years ago

Well it looks like Travis Green was the problem. Boudreau took Benning’s team and actually utilized the players properly.
