Brilliant move by DJ Smith. That's a step in the right direction. The league should make this the norm.
Refs are like politicians.
Some are corrupted, some are not.
But all Refs are against the Mtl Canadiens.
100 years old story.
It is a pretty good idea. I'm sure it would make the refs feel more respected if they're being addressed by name
Seriously. Did you even watch the covid playoffs. Fuk sakes. There suppose to watch an blow the whistle when they see sum shyte. You know the rule book and the rules. They deserve credit and respect, but both things are also earned and not expected to be given lightly.
honestly i didnt think about it this way! very good points.
Let off some steam by waterboarding the refs, boys.
This sounds stupid and naive, but as someone who never played any hockey at any level, I always took it for granted that the refs and players all were familiar with each other once you get to the NHL.
They could make it so refs have their last names on the back of their jerseys
Tell them to do their jobs right if they want to be respected
I thought this was so they can argue calls and make threats by name 💀
The pissed off players looking at the pictures after getting a goal called off: 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬
Zebras will never have my respect. Not our fault you weren't good enough to make the NHL. yet they bring their bias towards certain teams with them.
I still think some refs have money riding on the games
So instead of a player just yelling and screaming at a ref/linesman. He should be respectful and say his name. Then start yelling
I think the fact that refs will respect a players attempt to negate a penalty is a cool touch, like with what Makar did against the Isles and what Ovi did a season or two ago
Most of the comments on here are exactly why there aren't as many new refs taking up the jobs. Pretty soon nobody will want to put on the stripes. I imagine wearing the vertical stripes must feel pretty close to the horizontal stripes of a prison uniform. All you abusers are disgusting. Nobody's perfect, the rules aren't perfect and not many people even try to understand. 🤦🏾♂️🤮
The refs do a wonderful job at screwing over the Flames…game 6…Tampa…still to soon for me to talk about it.
THis makes me like DJ more. Such a nice dude.
Wow… way too many snowflakes. Nobody gives a shit about their names. ref the game, get the calls right and be done.
@00:45 ya okay bud. When the fucking referees are as bad as they are they deserves the hate.
Good post. Refs get dumped on but rarely receive accolades.
didnt the leafs do this a few months ago
Refs don’t have enough credit and they are took for granted
nah as an oiler fan f*#k the refs this year
Montreal do this!!
Maybe, just MAYBE, being a hockey referee is just really, really hard. It's fast and chaotic with a ton of stuff happening all the time. Thinking the refs are making bad calls on purpose is just childish and dumb. People really need to cut them some slack. I doubt any of the people yelling and harrassing them could do the job half as well.
It's just a hard job.
To all the haters in the comment section… grab a whistle and sign up for a course. These guys are the best of the best and are amazing refs overall. Better than most pro sports. Most plebs have no idea what its like to ref a big game and only know what it's like to rest a shitty Coors Light on their fat gut while yelling at their TV… or worse, the 13 year old reffing their kids game.
You’re right except refs anymore don’t work hard to get to the nhl.
Half of the older guys have and I don’t want to undermine how hard those guy worked in the minors for years.
Unfortunately, now most of the “new hires” just quit playing a few years ago and get fast tracked right into high level pro hockey.
It’s sad that guys don’t stand a chance at becoming nhl referees anymore unless you played pro hockey.
NHL. or some good ( Netflix) ? Should create a documentary series on the path from youth hockey to becoming an NHL Referee or linesman. It is a tough road with judgements and evaluation every step of the way always from the next level of officiating you are trying to attain. Could make a great series along with documentaries about the rise of players to the NHL.

At $2000 + per game, I think the officials can handle a little criticism, once they screw up a call or don't make a call at all, safety first or you get total chaos!!!
We can’t play hockey without refs.
never hurts to keep the refs happy that’s for sure
While refs should get more recognition like this I don’t think it helps with the players being rats to them. Rats will be rats.
As a youth baseball coach I do this too. I just go and introduce myself and get their names. When they’re used to being called ref (or blue in baseball) it makes them feel respected and they’ll listen to you more.
Good Idea, really helps for enhanced chirping on the zebras!!!! 😉
This is my second year of reffing. Havent been doing a terrible job cuz nobodys yelled at me het
Every arm chair warrior can say how bad refs are until they are refs themselves and see that it’s not an easy job.
