agree with the trade or not, they are "retooling" around petey and hughes. its really not that complicated. I dont know why thats so hard for people to understand. Retooling isnt a bad thing, its just that this organization has a history of doing it improperly. With a really good gm, it should only take a couple years to turn a franchise around in this era.
I don't think a core of Hughes, Pettersen and Demko is unreliable. It's definitely something a team can build around. Having Hronek at 4.4 for two years as a trial run beside Hughes isn't that devastating.
The pieces that they did move this deadline, Lazar & Schenn, Stillman weren't really part of the long term plans. A third, fourth and a prospect isn't a bad return for that trio.
Players like Boeser, Miller & Garland can be moved in the offseason when other teams have more cap flexibility with their unwanted contracts coming off the books.
I'll also note that Vancouver lost in the second round in 19-20, so they have had more success than the Leafs.
What they're doing is beating the Leafs. Somehow.
I have a bad feeling about these playoffs. 🙃 Yes, yes, I know, new trades getting acclimated. But Dangle said it best.
They've been retooling for 11 years. They have won 1 playoff round since 2012. The play in round win in 2020 doesn't count as a playoff series win. That is what retooling gets you. If they had torn it down 4 years ago, they would more than likely be on their way to being a good young team, instead of a middling team, which they have been for a decade. Thank you Frank Aquilini.
