I hated trading for him at first but came to love him being on the Wings.

I got to meet him at an Indy Fuel game earlier this year. Super nice guy!

Title scared me for a second.

Chicago native! One of the best US born players ever

Emphasis on “long time”.
I have had the chance to meet him on several occasions, he was always very nice and super friendly. I understand the heat he took from Chicago fans after playing for Detroit but that always made me upset knowing how nice of a guy he is. It was a shame when they boo-ed him during his tribute.

Could you imagine being the son of this guy and having to play for China in the olympics… What a disappointment.

I’ll never forget going to the first Wings @ Canes game after the 2002 finals. I had seats right in the corner where the Wings left the ice and went to the locker room. Canes fans were giving him the business after the period ended and one old lady boo’d Chelios hard. He looked right at her and mockingly boo’d back in her face. Laughed so hard at that interaction. He saw me laughing and gave me a little « you like that huh? » smirk like 😏

He’s up on the Mount Rushmore of the Blackhawks

Thrashers legend.

As a kid who played defence growing up in Michigan, Chelios was my favorite player. Why him when Lidstrom was also on the team? No idea. But then I met him at the Michigan high school all-state player banquet when I was a senior and it was so surreal. He was a really nice guy! It was so weird to meet him when my gamertag growing up was always « cheli » and then some numbers.
Edit: i misspelled Lidstrom’s name, which is more than a little embarrassing

Lmao hell yes, calling him a Red Wing over a Blackhawk

*Cmon Chelios you old fuck, skate!*

Absolutely gutless that Babcock wouldn’t give him more than 2 minutes on ice during his Winter Classic return to Chicago

It’s still weird seeing him in a Detroit jersey

Fun fact he’s wearing Bob Proberts number here and Probert played for both Detroit and Chicago also

And before the wings, before the hawks, he won a cup in fucking Montréal! Original six awesomeness

Hey Cheli gave his heart and soul when he was a Blackhawk , yes it was brutal he went to our arch rival but he went to get his ring
Frammingatthejimjam
He was at a card show not long after leaving the Canadians. Late in the show there was no line up to him, All I had was Gretzky cards but I went up and asked him for an autograph. He looked at me and said
« I’m not signing that »
I replied that « Gretzky would sign your cards »
« I’m not Gretzky, I’m more of a Messier and he wouldn’t sign it »
I forget the rest of the exchange which went on for a couple of minutes. (which kind of ruins the story) but that exchange was the high point in my life of talking smack, I was brilliant by my standards and he still out smack talked me easily. He was hilarious in his trash talking of me.
30ish years ago and I’m still impressed.

Anytime I think of Chelios, I think of the time when Hextall tackled him at the blueline and tried to feed him his blocker.
