  1. If I hadn't developed a love for hockey very early on (like before the internet existed) I think the gatekeeping of so-called "hockey fans" online would've prevented me from ever developing an interest in the sport. I grew up in Louisiana and began watching NHL games on ESPN as a kid, probably 9 or 10 years old. It wasn't until years later when the internet came to be with message boards and now social media that I realized there were such provincial attitudes among hockey fans, like you couldn't possibly understand or love the game unless you grew up on the ice or something.
(It's about as absurd as the notion that one need grow up in a grass field to understand soccer, or that you couldn't truly understand basketball unless your childhood home had hardwood floors. Idiotic!)
I couldn't begin to count the names I've had somebody from Boston or Montreal or Toronto sneer at me online because of where I'm from and the team I root for when there's a pretty strong likelihood that I know as much or more about the game than that person considering I've been watching for 35 or so years, playing for at least 20 and now I coach 8U and 10U kids.
At times it has really detracted from my love for the sport, so anymore I try to avoid online discussions and the small minds connected to big mouths that tend to ruin everything.

  2. It's not a conspiracy. Why go play in the cold with more taxes and a weaker dollar.

  3. I got a unique view for this video. I was born in Utah and live in Edmonton, so the Oilers are my number one team followed by Vegas. That also means I'm an American who grew up in Canada, and I actually don't cheer for Canadian teams (NHL and internationally) because I was bullied out of being a hockey kid for being an American. As a result I will cheer for Vegas if they win tonight (though I'd much rather cheer for the Oilers) but I am SO sick and tired of Canadian elitism. Can't people be happy that other people are getting into hockey? I love watching people go crazy over hockey (it's why I kinda enjoyed watching the Leafs finally win round 1, but that's it). So while I'll cheer for teams close to wear I live and was born, and I'll root especially for American and Albertan players, good hockey is more important and we have gotten a lot of tremendous hockey. I'm proud of my Oilers and Vegas, I'm proud of the Avs too and I'm excited for the Yotes. I'm really happy for southern teams too because it's heartwarming to see people learn the sports (plus its funny watching Canadian elitists forced to chew on their dumb takes).

  4. I am an American and I have been an Oilers fan for the last 12 years. I truly believe that the NHL favors American teams because that's where they stand to profit the most. Canadian teams pretty much have all the fans they're going to get but if a team in Vegas, Seattle or Dallas wins the cup they will see new fans jump on board and sell more merch.

  5. Some people complain about playing so late. It is not late. Puck drop early evening is not late.
I think some east coast fan forget that people who live in the Pacific and Mountain time zones don't arrange their life's around east coast time.

  6. I'm in Australia, but I'm a study transplant, and it was in Sweden that I found this channel

  7. American here.

I ALMOST wonder if Canadian teams are at a slight disadvantage attracting players within the salary cap, when certain US teams have 0 state income tax.

  8. what's up with the 10pm start time. Do they not want people from the east coast to watch this game?

  9. After the Pietrangelo intent-to-injure slash and slap on the wrist suspension, have to cheer for the Oilers.

  10. Canada's default argument: no CA team can win the cup BUT the cup winner has Canadians on it.
It's not the same at all, it just makes you sound sad if that's your argument.

  11. They were getting their hopes up for an all Canada cup. And I'd argue hockey struggles compared to other sports in America because most players aren't American. And until about 30 years ago American born players were given little to no chance to make the NHL.

  12. I live in canada but ive been a stars fan since i was a kid. Watching mike modano as a kid made me a fan. People rag on me because i dont cheer for the keafs because theyre canadian and i alqays say .. Look they arent all canadian ehhhh lmao.. Dude benn seguin oettinger all canadian.
Anyways ive grown to cheer against canadian teama because of things like this. Go vegas

  13. I agree. Im canadian too and i find alot of our fans obnoxious to the point i prefer vegas over edmonton. Go knights

  14. The USA versus Canada debate to me is not where the players are from but where they would rather play, and the currency they would rather have too

  15. You be surprised how many fellow Americans thought it was ballsy we called Detroit, Hockey Town. I always pointed out the fine print on the sign. Hockey Town, USA.

  16. An hour outside of Vancouver? I wonder where abouts, we could be neighbours 🤔

  17. For the state of Minnesota all teams have been kind of a state of Minnesota so it didn't matter if you were within the city or not you could still root for the state which has guesses kind of like country for the Canadian teams

  18. As an American fan who roots for a Canadian team (the poor old Flames), I think to be a hockey fan in the US you have to be more dedicated because the NHL, in its infinite wisdom, makes it very hard to follow the game down here. You have to look for it, while I think in Canada, from what I hear, you actually have to make an effort to avoid hockey. That doesn't make the US fan a better fan, but maybe a more determined fan. I couldn't imagine a more trivial argument. I mean, who cares? As for the make-up of a team, who cares about that too? I remember the Blue Jays winning the World Series and it was looked at as a great Canadian triumph, and I don't think there were any Canadian players on the team. I'm not sure. Dave McKay might have been a coach because he was there for many years. And there was nothing wrong with it being a great Canadian sports moment. It's just a game, man. It's supposed to be entertainment.

  19. Yep this was something Oilers fans used against us Kings fans in the first round. They probably don’t realize that Kings fans stuck with the team through the tough 20 years.

  20. Glad I'm not the only one still calling it the Czech Republic on accident!

  21. Killni' Me – so why is the Sunday night game a late game? NHL could easily have moved it or picked to start it as 5, 6, 7 8pm EST – FAIL!!!!!!!!!

  22. If the Stars and Golden Knights can win their series, you'll have an all Sun Belt final four in the NHL.

  23. So as far as fans go, what defines “better fans” ?? If its rioting in the streets, flipping/burning cop cars when there team loses, then yes, Canada has more “fanatical fans”. I can recall any time that happened in America.

  24. 4 Sunbelt teams in the Final Four makes me laugh thinking about how pissed it makes fans of Northern Teams

  25. 8:29 Would the exception be Montreal (do they do an equivalent chant in French instead of "Ref you suck", or is Montreal bilingual enough for it not to matter)?

  26. I went to a game in Nuremberg Germany, sat by this old man and his wife and their daughter or granddaughter. The daughter spoke English the couple didn't. But they were laughing at me in the old man because every play we reacted the same 😂 couldn't understand eachother but spoke the same hockey language 😊

  27. I’m from Detroit. I would say there’s many hockey fans in Detroit, Buffalo, Boston, Chicago, Philly and Minnesota that are as knowledgeable about the game as any Canadian. And are probably just as big of fans, and good of fans. I guess because we didn’t riot twice like Vancouver did we’re not good fans, according to the lesser iq Canucklehead crowd. Dunkin Donuts>Tim Hortons too 😉

  28. I love that you talked about this subject as an american I get frustrated hearing canadians blame the officials or Bettman but if it was vice versa I would probably feel the same way.

  29. Can you imagine the parties in Edmonton if they made it to the next round.
