A tough team is different than a rough team. This matchup proving it.
So, Evan Rodrigues gets thrown under the bus about his inability to not retaliate in situations that can cost the team in the playoffs, and yet the prince of retaliation and the teams leader in penalty minutes: Evgeni Vladimirovich Kovacevic Malkin, gets a pass? Oh yeah, when I think of Penguins of the past 15+ years who can't keep their cool and take stupid retaliation penalties, Evan Rodrigues is right at the top.
Vegas is doing an amazing job with not retaliating. The other thing I've noticed is there were more play affecting hits in either of these first 2 games than Our Pens had this whole last season. We need to be alittle more physical like our Stanley cup winning teams were.
Goalie Bob not looking good. The Panthers aren't going to win with Tkatuck is in the penalty box. It's not working against the Golden Knights . Stupid hockey doesn't work against every team in the NHL.
Vegas isnt exactly skating away from the rough/dirty stuff..they can dish it out too..they hold their own….They are just playing smarter.. Other teams impose their will upon the Pens and players like Malkin take dumb retaliatory penalties and whine. The other teams know how to get in the Pens heads. No way the Pens in their present state could compete against either of these two teams unfortunately in a playoffs scenario….Half the team would have been out w. injuries by now including the goalie who would have been run over multiple times. Older players must surely be tired of being hit (and hitting) by now and the Pens are an old team. They need a few big physical YOUNG guys on the roster who can play…and a much more robust D…then maybe the older players wouldnt be abused as much
I thougjt the Tkachuk hit was a penaltie . He was NOT playing for the puck and left his feet.he made a bee line rigjt for a big hit and landed it.
The J1Q today just makes me think more about some of the heckling and sour grapes coming out of Toronto. There's some chatter from them that Dubas had some really bad trades, and he overpays everybody, and he stinks, and whatever. But firstly, I think he did fine in Toronto, overall. And secondly, it sure looks like he was brought in mostly to do what you said, do the job we all thought Burke was supposed to.
In the interim, Dubas fills essentially the same role he did in Toronto. But I'm not sure I buy the idea some are floating that the GM will be a GM in name only. I'm expecting him to be far more involved with trades, singing players, etc. than a traditional PoHO. But I also think he wants to bring in a GM he can trust to do all the things you'd expect from your GM. There were a lot of good quotes from his introductory presser. But one that really stood out to me is when he said, when looking for a GM, he wanted someone who has a skillset he doesn't. That tells me he's aware of at least some of the weaknesses he had as a GM, and wants to hire someone who will negate those shortcomings, whatever they are.
We'll see. But I think there's a lot of potential in this management team that's being built.
