I think even back then, Panthers fans knew what they were losing. It’s not like Marchy was some unknown 4th liner

  2. Why didn’t they protect him in the first place?

GMs were asleep at the wheel back then since it had been many years since the last expansion draft.

  4. All of us fans were screaming about it back then. I remember being pissed. Anyone who did forget was quickly reminded the following year in the playoffs. The management over here was historically bad for a long ass time. Not much to be upset about through, win or lose the team is at least competitive and that’s more than they were for most of the teams history.

Florida choosing to protect a 4th Dman instead of Marchessault was considered dumb at the time. Giving Vegas Reilly Smith along with Marchessault is one of the biggest blunders by a GM in the cap era. Without those two players, Vegas may sneak into the playoffs year one, but they don’t make it to the Cup final.

If Florida goes with the 7-3-1 protection instead of 8-1, they protect Barkov, Bjugstad, Huberdeau, Trocheck, Marchessault, two additional forwards (likely leave Smith unprotected and hope Vegas takes his cap hit), Ekblad, Yandle (NMC), and one of Petrovic/Pysyk. Vegas likely takes the D that Florida chooses not to protect and the Panthers unload Smith to another team for peanuts to absorb the cap hit or Vegas might still take Smith.

I didn’t get at the time how Florida screwed up that bad and it’s only gotten worse over the last 6 years.

Pens fans would like to take a ride in the car as well, and give up Matt Murray without the extra draft pick they lost in ‘making’ them take Fleury.

Also…can we stop by in 2021 on the way back…just so we don’t lose 2 good players?
