Rivalités : Avalanche du Colorado vs Red Wings de Détroit

Leurs affrontements en finale de conférence étaient considérés comme les vraies finales à l’époque parce qu’ils étaient tellement meilleurs sur le papier que n’importe qui d’autre. 1. Nope. The seeds for the rivalry were planted in game 3 of the '96 playoffs when Slava Kozlov gently nudged Adam Foote's head into the glass, then Lemieux sucker punches Kozlov from behind later in the game. The hit on Draper in game six was the gasoline on the small fire.

  2. McCarty did not cheap shot Lemieux in 1997. A cheap shot is when you hit the guy from behind. Darren cold-cocked him. He looked him right in the eyes and hit him as hard as he could.

  3. Funny that those two years where they didn't play each other, 1998 and 2001, guess who won those Cups?

  4. I'm an islanders fan and I absolutely loved this rivalry. They were the two best teams in the league and they despised each other.

  5. I always rooted for Detroit in this rivalry but everyone forgets that Kozlov slammed Adam Foote's face into the glass. It was a total cheap shot.

  6. You're wrong Shannon. The rivalry started when Kozlov slammed Foote's face off the glass.

  7. "There were some fights in the game" – I feel like this is simultaneously the most and least accurate description possible of the game

  8. Would be interesting to get a video on a matchup between the 01 avs and 02 red wings. I'd pick the avs, but would be interesting to get THG's view.

  9. Chris Osgood was a really close friend of my dad. So boy I got some lucky times during this era of detroit. I went to the after party as a 8 year old kid, drinking coca cola out of the cup at the Post Bar downtown in detroit, with McCarty, dandenault, and Osgood hooting and hollering while im sipping from the straw. man what a good time, Osgood had a limo sent to our home and rolled up to the party in that LOL. Also during the Stanley cup celebration parade, Osgood picked me up when they drove past us, and he put me in the Corvette he was cruising in through the parade. Man what great times. I have all the pictures and everything, so I love going back and looking at them and remembering the crazy childhood I had.

  10. Greatest sports rivalry in recent history. Yeah the bad blood gets overblown a bit. That all came down to 96 PlayOffs and the hit by Lemieux. Mind you, Lemieux's hit was the catalyst, but there were events leading up to it. Detroit getting swept by the Devils in 95, thanks in big part to Lemieux. Roy getting run out of Montreal at the hands of the Red Wings. The brutal Kozlov hit on Adam Foote in Game 3. By the summer of 97 the scores were mostly settled and it turned primarily into an intense sporting rivalry. With Yzerman and Sakic, Fedorov and Forsberg, just at Center you had 4 of the premiere players on these 2 teams. Roy vs Osgood was actually a bit of a mismatch, but in turn Detroit generally had a deeper blue line. And then GMs Pierre Lacroix and Ken Holland would regularly add big names at the trade deadline really just for this show down.

  11. Fun fact:
The lemieux hit on draper was not what started the hatred. It was the game before when koslov grabbed the back of foote's head and slammed it into the glass (giving him something like 20 stitches) and there was no penalty. Also, scotty bowman confronting lemieux while he was walking with his family after the game cause lemieux sucker punched koslov for the hit on foote. So, in the game where lemieux broke draper's face, the avs were already on edge and that hit just threw gas on an already lit fire

  12. Fact is the rivalry started before lemieux. Kozlof hit on Foote. McCarty didn’t sucker him. It was a cold-cock. One is when the other guy isn’t looking, the other is when you skate right up to him face first and let it rip.

  13. I have to say, that I truly believe that the reason that the rivalry didn't see any game with big brawls in 2001 & 2002 is the Claude Lemieux was no longer was no longer a part of the team. Also in regard to how you could have tons of penalties in a few games, but not in every game, and especially the playoff games where it really mattered and because of the Captains of both team. I truly believe that behind closed doors Sakic and Yzerman were able to keep their respective teams focused when it mattered most.
