Yeah it’s sucks to see a misfit go especially this soon after the cup but these are the kind of moves that have kept this team in contention for its entire existence and now especially they have a short window they need to maximize

But for a moment of clarity for everyone, the only reason we’ve been able to stay competitive every year and win the cup so quickly is because the McGMs are willing to move the guys necessary to win.
Everyone hates the Fleury and Patches moves until you realize it freed up the space to get Eichel and without Eichel we don’t win the cup.

Honestly I’m okay with this move. I’m glad Smith got his cup first, but he hasn’t been that pivotal to the knights the last couple seasons. If it was Karlsson or marchessault I’d be pissed, but Smith is an acceptable move.

Oh my god…this one hurts. So glad he won the Cup with some of the Misfits before going, but damn.
I stood by the McGMs when they dumped Flower, I could understand that move.
I didn’t understand the Pacioretty dump until seeing that he only played 5 games last season, it really was for the best.
Smith has been on a slow decline the past few seasons, and despite stellar defensive play, his offense was barely there in the playoffs (full credit for the cup winning goal though!). If this is the move that has to be made to keep both Hill and Barbashev, I understand. But that doesn’t make watching Smith leave any less hard.

If we sign barbie then I can live with it, but still sad to see him go. But we got to lift the cup with him, so will always have that.
This may be my Hot Take but as much as I love our original Misfits, we already reached out goal and won the Cup for them.
We can’t just keep players for sentimental reasons, this is a business after all. Taking the emotions out of this choice, it’s clear that keeping BARBI was a priority. The guy is an absolute beast and will be a big part of this team moving forward.
I’m happy for Smith that he got to win with us but now it’s time to move on, especially if we want to repeat.
Real question, what happens to Player’s Locker when all the owners have left? 😂 If we sign Barbie this move will be worth it. It’s a business and unfortunately you have to make tough moves. I will miss his PK magic with Karly. I feel like this means Doro or Cotter get a larger share of games next season.

Good time to step back and realize that if this management team had Toronto’s roster, that core would have been broken up ages ago. It’s been said a few times in this thread, but the lack of sentimentality is the price of success. We have a cup after all of the heart wrenching moves, so I’m willing to trust that this is going to free up some space for us to make improvements and come back even stronger.
All that being said, I will always love Reilly and could never stop cheering for him. He’ll always be a Misfit, and we’ll always have the 6 years that he helped pilot the ship with an ‘A’ on his chest.
I feel like this cup win was the closing of a chapter for us, in a way. The scrappy misfits have gone all the way to the top and hoisted a cup. We’re no longer Misfits, we’re champions, and clearly our sights are set on being a dynasty rather than just being content with the lone victory. It’s a whole new world from here on out, and that means we’re going to see some new faces.

This sucks, my wife JUST came around to giving the org another chance after the Fleury fiasco a few months before the playoffs after a whole season of apathy. This just showed her the org STILL has no loyalty and I’m back to a disgruntled and disillusioned wife. 😭
3 years ago I’d be upset. After the patches trade I was pissed. Then we won a cup.
Reality is this enables us to pursue barbashev and I think he has more upside than smith long terms
Barbashev means more to Eichels success than smith does to anyone on his line.
