I think SJ did great in the draft. A-, B+
We could have moved up 3 spots from 26 in the 1st rd to get Perreault who fell to 23rd overall to keep will smith & him together on a line forever, woulda been cool. And we could have taken Cristall, Heidt, and Dragicevic at 26-36-71. A draft of Smith-Cristall-Heidt-Dragicevic-Cagnoni woulda looked really solid, & those were all available at our picks, but Greer definitely drafted size over those 3 instead with 6’2” Musty, 6’3” Halttunen, & 6’3” Svoboda.
It’s fine, still a good draft. But why don’t new GM’s know that all other new GM’s in every sport always drool-over & draft-higher size over ‘talent’, and it often doesn’t pan out. I think Greer has done a good job so far, as a diehard fan since the sharks 1st game ever when I was 4 years old, I’ve always liked Mike Greer and I trust him to take us back to the promised land. But I think he coulda drafted just a liiiittle bit better. Lots of talent fell. Let’s see how much he can get us back for Karlsson (maybe even Couture too?), and he can really slam dunk this off-season if he does well with those trade opportunities.
Would’ve given Grier an A if we didn’t trade up to pick Svoboda, I think we could’ve gotten him at 100. That and I would’ve given an A if we picked a Goalie in the later rounds. Other than that the picks were great value. Drafted 4 players that I think are in the top 40 in this draft and also getting great value in the later rounds. I’d give Grier an A-/B+
