A few things for context on a couple. Hishon was having an absolute monster year back in major junior and really looking like a steal until he got blown up in the Memorial Cup by Brayden McNab (currently of VGK) on a really dirty blindside hit. I think the bigger discussion around the Byram draft could be more focused on Ottawa than on the Avs. Remember from the Duchene trade that the Avs had Ottawa's first round pick in 2018 that was top 10 protected so Ottawa had up until the time they were on the clock to decide if they wanted to make that pick or give it to the Avs. At that time they had not yet traded Karlson so they were hoping for a quick rebound. They then ended up the following season in the same spot the Avs were in the 2017 draft where they had the best odds at #1 but dropped to 4. Imagine if they thought they had a better chance at #1 the next year and gave up #4 in 2018 to the Avs and they ended up with Brady Tkachuck. Overall, I would give the Avs a solid A for that decade of drafting. It won a Cup and built the core that has a legit chance at more. I won't go A+ because their later round picks haven't been very good. However they have managed to swap some of them to get roster players, and bolstered the prospect pool in other ways.
Even as an Avs fan I think Mikko still goes 3 behind Marner, Marner is insanely underrated because he's a Leaf and Eichel is very overrated because of the nhls darlings finally winning the cup. I'm taking Marner over Rants and I love The Moose but Marner is just phenomenal.
