Hopefully this is the first of many leagues doing this.

I’m hopeful this leads to improved technology on neck guards (and wrist guards) as well. Concerns over heat retention or comfort are legitimate, but I’m hopeful that we’ll see a high-quality product that addresses those in the immediate future.

I think this is great. But it’s not proactive. It is definitely reactive

Safety measures get compulsory implementation always too late, unfortunately

Honestly thinking of getting one for my son who plays on a 12U travel team…

Would a neck guard have actually protected Johnson in this case? They’re thin pieces of fabric and the skate hit him pretty hard.

I suppose they could help in glancing blows, I haven’t worn a neck guard in about 15 years, but unless technology has improved recently, I don’t think they provide all that much protection

This is the team Petr Cech (ex premier league goalkeeper) plays for. My local team.

I think the players should have the right to decide whether or not they want to wear these things. They’re fairly cumbersome and they kind of choke you.

This is great but if the NHL does this i think it would be better

It’s sad that it took a death for things to start changing.

I remember growing up people would chirp you if you wore a neck guard. Imagine being chirped for not wanting to die lol..

Anyone have a link to the most comfortable neck guards? I’m a referee/linesman and debated wearing one for a while. I was mocked for wearing a mouth guard in my university days and stopped wearing it. I’ve taken a puck and a stick to the face, replaced 3 teeth and 4 root canals.

It’s a lot more difficult to replace a carotid artery.

I’m looking around at some neck guards and it looks like the designs/comfort haven’t changed since I was a kid. Bulky and stiff

Are neck guards forbidden? Why do we have to make them mandatory to protect players? Are players not capable of protecting themselves by choosing to wear neck guards?

  13. dishwasher_mayhem

Would have thought that after Malarchuck players would have wanted mor protection.

  14. MegaComrade53

Neck guards are already mandatory here for youth hockey in Canada. Glad to hear others are going to do the same.

But lmao at making coaches wear them

  15. Like for the rule changes in the NHL, NFL, and your local arena, the changes will come…. thanks to the insurance companies.

You force the neck guard, or here’s your new premium.

It’s a start, but it’s annoying that this is what it takes for a semi-pro team to introduce this, let alone our top flight league.

And yes, Oxford Stars are a semi-pro, not a rec team

  17. shawnglade

Something I didn’t even realize is how incredibly fucking sad (obviously) this is for both teams. Nottingham’s Mike Hammond died in July, and Sheffield’s Alex Graham died in June. Both teams had a player die over the summer and now this

  18. I_lurk_at_wurk

I bought my first neck guard today.

  19. ultradianfreq

Thank god captain hindsight was on duty after this incident.

  20. Ok-Photograph-8303

This is nuts. How many players have gotten their necks cut in how many millions of hours of game play?

  21. theGurry

Honestly, the online response to this incident is making me realize just how shitty people are on the internet.

  22. Swimming-Salad-4149

They aren’t rec, other teams in same league and the league ge above have also implemented it. I don’t like wearing neck guards but am going to give the compression tops with built in neck protection a try

  23. TaintMisbehaving69

So, the UK has one fatality and the response is a sensible alteration of the rules to protect people.

The US has fatalities and does nothing, citing the “rights” of its’ players….standard US logic….

  24. Truffinator2

    All players and coaching staff?
What are the odds a neckguard even protects this injury? Especially the ones they will wear. It will be like an inch thick band hung loosely.
Hopefully they invent a comfier and more protective one but I doubt it.

  25. MostLikelyDenim

Lmao making the coaches wear them too

  26. CheetyoGames

You’d think Malarchuk and that Panthers player would have done it. No, they lived so it’s totally fine! /s

It’s never fine or okay. Malarchuk has severe trauma from his throat being slashed open, to the point he tried committing suicide.

Finally somewhere is being logical. RIP Adam.

  27. Just_Brumm_It

When it comes to adults playing professional sports I think this should just be optional. I agree with kids wearing them but this is so uncommon and a freak accident. Extremely unfortunate too. I’ve played a lot of hockey and high level at that, something like this just won’t stick in the long run, imo but just give the players the option.
