Yeah, 2 relative expansion teams, one (LV) that a lot of fans really dislike or are at least indifferent about.
Vegas gamed the expansion draft, screwed players like Fleury, and won a cup early. Good for them. I still think they are trash, so yeah, I don’t watch their games. Their transient fans love them I guess. The Kraken? I don’t know a single player on them, nice uniforms though.
Shockingly, seems a lot of other hockey fans feel the same way.

I don’t even know what platform to find TNT on. The NHL made its product way too hard to find
-FR0STY-one
I have TNT and forgot it was on.
LemmySixx
The outside games have jumped the shark. It should be a once a year marquee event between 2 marquee teams.
gabarooch86
Unless my team is playing in it then I could not care less. There is nothing special about the outdoor game anymore. It’s more for the people attending these days. Secondly, why TNT? It’s like having it on NHL Network, I’m not signing up for a service to watch two teams I don’t care about play in a baseball stadium for one game.
Marty-Deberg
The NHL will 100% attribute this to the fact that the game did not involve an Original 6 team and won’t ask at all whether this event has become tired and worn out in general.
Stockersandwhich
Bc the game wasn’t on ABC, and regional markets wernt involved.
rune1923
Not surprised. The game was buried on TNT and was competing with huge college football games.
mikey4goalie
Didn’t watch this game because of the Rose Bowl. Only so much time in a day and I choose that game. The NHL has made these less interesting with how many they do.
BlackFalconEscalator
Because they make it so dang stupid to watch the games
JimJamurToe
Meh. Nobody cares about two newb teams going at it. The only fan’s that care are Seattle and Vegas fans.
FloggingTheCargo
I watched it from the high seas. Could barely keep my attention. Couldn’t have picked a worse match up than the two newest teams.

There are a few articles out there discussing the downward trend in viewership. One attributed it to the NHL having more than one outdoor game a season.
I was surprised it did not mention the change from NBC (national tv) to TNT. Less casual fans watching, where some may have tuned in with the event being on NBC. NBC is also accessible by antenna for those not explicitly paying for cable or a streaming service.
dbag3o1
The solution is to play the game at midnight.
Puck drops at 12! People are awake and want fun and no other games are on. Hear me , Bettman!!
reeser6
That’s what happens when it’s not on NBC.
nakon14
Directly competing against massive college football games
NHL doing their damndest to also make it as annoying as possible to try to watch a game if you don’t have cable, which I feel is also a major impact
hey-there-yall
I’m sure the absolute hack, cringe, circus fish throwing gimmick didn’t help. Won’t help for next year either.
toddkris18
Who puts a hockey game on on the biggest day of college football all year long?? No wonder nobody saw it. It’s also buried deep down on TNT and nobody’s paying for that shit anymore lol. Also of course they used 2 expansion teams from the west coast for a game that started at 10AM their time!?! Doesn’t seem smart if you ask me especially if anyone celebrated the night before
Key-Understanding770
Because TNT. I have 4 different streaming services and none have TNT. Not paying for another just for that channel.
falsekoala
Don’t care about winter classic games and even less when I don’t care about the two teams playing.
Armageddon_666
It was on TNT and it was two teams that most people wouldn’t go out of their way to watch anyways, so we are surprised?
mc_bots
Does this report count for viewership on the MAX app? TV viewership has trended downward across every major event year over year for the past decade. It’s not representative of the NHL or the winter classic in a vacuum.
Tatehamma
1.1M viewers that are subscribed that is.
Ph1llyth3gr8
Yeah…zero interest. The marketing for it was so poor that I had forgotten about the winter classic, and by the time I was reminded, neither team is worth watching. There’s zero interest.
The nhl has always been the absolute worst of the big 4 at marketing their product. And any chance of ESPN lifting it up is long gone, they’ve made it even harder to watch.
Coolio_McAwesome
Who or what is TNT?
The real question is did the game sell out. The winter classic as a TV experience is crap, as a fan attending I bet it’s unique.
drumzandice
It’s corny:
1. Coaches in varsity jackets and fedoras – lame
2. Interviewing players about growing up on ponds. For the most part todays players are rink rats – that’s a bygone era
3. Cheesy elements like the fake outdoorsy props, players coming in wearing costumes, overly goofy announcers, bad musical entertainment.
Here’s how I’d fix it – most of which I know will never happen.
One outdoor game a year, played on 12-26.
Played between the previous season’s SC Finalists
Play on a real Pond in Northern Canada. No fans just hockey and TV cameras. If not possible play on a true, outdoor rink in the North – not a baseball or football stadium
KingMiyamotoMusashi
This is going to be shocking to ALL of you.. but I think the NHL is really not that good at marketing. I would even venture to say they are down right bad.
PoopSlinger23
Maybe don’t put it on TNT
MailConsistent1344
TNT, and the teams in the game.
FigSideG
I didn’t even know the shit was on and all I do is follow and read sports stuff every day🤷🏻♂️

East Coast fans hate West Coast teams playing
