This team is only missing a Reilly Smith at wing and a Ryan Graves on D, type of player, from being a strong contender. Imagine if those two replicated their recent history… or something like it. Dubas did his job in putting together this roster. Can't flaw him for looking for cheap talent (see rotating bottom) when we have a cap-constrained team. We need to find those young, hungry wheels that will fight for their second/third chance in the show, not keep lopping 35y/o 2013 all-star wingers on the roster to hope they are Bill Guerin or Gary Roberts… and our system is too thin to call up two capable wingers to ride along for a cup run. The issue I foresee is the seller group being thin as we approach the deadline and the price to get a contributor will exceed what we can offer.
Time is ticking. The hit and miss mindset needs to be corrected. This team is not getting younger. Now is the time to push for a cup or call it and rebuild.
Until they start finishing badly enough to get actual top picks, then I would keep trading their late 1st rounders for proven talent young enough to help now and when Crosby is gone. Through the history of this team, they've never done anything with drafting to build another contender unless they were at rock bottom and getting those top 5 type players. History also shows they stand a better chance at getting a good player with a 2nd through 7th round pick, than they do a late 1st, as it seems for whatever reason those late 1sts are over-rated and already maxed their ceilings, whereas the later round picks have more potential to grow into a reliable and productive NHL players.
Of the current Penguins who were Penguins draft picks, there's Puustinen, a 203rd overall 7th round pick who's showing really well now at the NHL level. Drafted the same year as 1st round pick Poulin, who is washing out and may never get more than a cup of coffee with the Penguins. There's Jake Guentzel, a 3rd round pick, Kris Letang, a 3rd round pick, Bryan Rust, a 3rd round pick. Tristan Jarry, a 2nd round pick. The closest thing the Pens have on the roster now to a 1st round pick that wasn't their no-brainer top pick like Crosby or Malkin, is P.O. Joseph, a late 1st rounder at 23rd overall, and he can't even stay in the lineup when healthy. Radim Zohorna is getting more playing time than Joseph and he was undrafted.
IMO, late 1st round picks are better spent in trades for proven talent with no guess work and development time involved. Doesn't have to be spent on old rentals, it can be for younger players whose contracts or other circumstances make them available. For every one Yager they may luck into with their late 1sr round pick (and the jury's still out on whether he'll be an automatic everyday player on this team in the future), there's at least a half-dozen or more Beau Bennett's, Derrick Pouliot's, and Sam Poulin's. As long s Crosby's on the team they'll be in the playoff hunt, or committed to making the playoffs, which means they'll be picking late. Spend the pick.
Totally hate losing to the Caps but at least the Devils beat them last night so we can still pass them in a couple wins if they lose again.
NO JARRY!!!!!
