  1. And this is why you don’t play in Canada, you would be crazy to play for a Canadian team in a salary cap league. You get 10 in Florida, you keep 10. You get 10 in Canada you get 4.5.. crazy

  2. first thing..this treaty is reciprocal..meaning canadians like JT can get a ONE TIME tax break from the IRS. It would not surprise me if JT took advantage of this tax break with the Islanders because the state of New York has a very high tax rate. When you get that tax break from the IRS you don't get that break if you move back to Canada. You give up that right under the treaty. Same rule apply to Matthews..no doubt he got a tax break from the CRA,,He would not get such a break from the IRS. Looks like to me JT got some VERY BAD advice somewhere.

  3. It's not where you live, it's where you made the money. So you will pay taxes in every province and state where you play

  4. It’s so crazy how people who earn money want to keep it and don’t want government hands in their pockets. If you don’t think this hurts the Canadian teams and market, you are kidding yourself. Who would want to play in Canada just to be taxed to hell?

  5. John will win his case. CRA is run so poorly some stooge making $20/hr figured they would go after a big fish and here we are.

  6. I am Canadian. Canada needs to have same taxes for players same in every team. Weather it’s Canada going down or others going up or all in us funds which it may be now

  7. Will become more common for leafs as the government continues to steal money from the people and spend it on useless foreign policy

  8. That's why canadian team needs to cough up a higher salary compared to low tax states just to "even out" the take home of players. That's why canadian team has a hard time winning the stanley as good players tend to go to the states.

  9. Who cares? The man has his own income and has his own obligations. They are not ours. They are his. Let him deal with it. There's nothing to see here folks. Go drink a beer or soda and kiss your significant other goodnight.

  10. If I made 10 million a year and government took 38 %, it would be hard but I'd try to get by with the rest

  11. I’m cheering for a Leaf, incredible 🤣🤣🤣. I hope he wins, we don’t want our government keeping good players from coming north. Plus, recent government performances have convinced me I don’t want to pay my taxes either.

  12. That’s just his federal tax btw.
You can bet a provincial taxes lawsuit will follow if the CRA wins.
    His accountant found a loophole.
When artists generate income while they visit canada, they can file under the treaty clause.
Since technically he was a resident of the US that specific year, he’s trying to justify this.
He’ll have to pay the tax is my guess.
Just like he has for all subsequent years.
It’s all part of the total compensation.

  13. congratulation trudeau. you will insure no free agents will ever come to canada and drafted players will be demanding trades to the US.

  14. I agree with most of the comments, however being someone who has been on the same end of the CRA bonus tax, I kinda hope he wins. As a blue collar worker the odd time I have recieved bonuses for my work. With a family and home to support those bonuses helped alot. But they would have helped alot more had they not been taxed at dam near 40%

  15. Seems strange to me about this tax issue. There has to precedent set before about these bonuses and taxes. Why is the Tavares situation unique?

  16. Giving bonuses means players like Matthews can put huge amounts of money in the bank and grow it at high interest rates faster.

  17. Arguing that a bonus is not tied to his contract opens a can of worms, as if he wins any player for a Canadian team will want just 'bonuses' and have all pay taxed at 15%, not 36%

  18. Yes, but if you know, in advance, the bonus will be taxed at 38 percent, as opposed to 15, it's an inducement, going forward, NOT to sign with a Canadian Team…

  19. Tavares should just pay the taxes and forget about it he has enough money in his account he really shows how greedy he is
