Matthews is rising to the occasion, so 50 in 53 games seems feasible. That’s 3 then 3 then 2, 8 goals in 3 games. He’s got to be up there with Brett Hull for all time best era-adjusted scoring season ever.
The year he got 50 in 39 games, Gretzky got 4 goals in game 38 then 5 in game 39. This was the source of his quip that he knew it was time to retire when he scored 9 goals in his final season “and 9 goals used to be a good weekend for me”.
