Blackwood/Vanacek is a deadly goalie tandem.

  2. Interesting. Kahkonen is a UFA after this year so essentially we’re dumping Vanecek’s 3.4M for next year to potentially go after something bigger in the offseason

  3. NJDevs30

Must be a favor from SJ for giving them that sweet deal for MBW

  4. JerseyDvl

We’re going to speedrun every shitty goalie in the league until we find one who’s mildly unshitty.

  5. GoudaGoudaGoudaGouda

Much better deal than the Jake Allen one

  6. nostradamefrus

I genuinely have no idea how to feel anymore

  7. miker26

Hopefully he finds a new hibachi joint in San Jose

  8. Batfleck666

Gets rid of VV’s contract, so 👍 move.

Kahkonen is a UFA after this year.

  9. dog_fantastic

Once again everyone who bitched about « trade literally anyone for literally anything » for a goalie are bitching when they get what they want.

  10. Kornja81

So it’s gonna be Daws and Akira until Kahkonen joins and then Daws/Akira and Kahkonen until Allen has his visa sorted out which leads to Allen and Kahkonen to finish the year.

  11. This is a smart move, you dump a huge contract and get a minor minor minor upgrade in net. More of this and less of the Allen move in the future.

  12. Tacitus_99

Thank you for last year Vitek, but this is a really smart move. Don’t have to potentially buy out VV in the offseason now. Even if Kahkonen stinks, that’s not the point of the trade.

  13. FacebookDevilsFans

lol stupid Rangers fans wanted them to pick this guy over Jack Hughes.

    AND WE GOT HIM ANYWAY!

  14. VanDerZappa

Wonder if this is going towards a bigger trade. I was a little interested in Kahkonen when the season started, but now I’m not so sure. He may just have bad numbers due to a shitty Sharks team, but it makes me a little nauseous if the game plan is to run him as backup with Allen to start

  15. CavCord141

This is actually a really good move. It’s more about freeing up the money this offseason then anything else. Gets out of the bad goalie contract a year early. Plus Allen is only 50% next year so should be able to get the big starter in the offseason.

  16. BurnerAccount374

So we’ll probably go with Kaapo and Allen for the rest of the season. Kaapo will walk and Allen will back up whoever we get as #1 in the summer. Allen is a cheaper backup than Vitek.

These trades aren’t sexy but very smart. Fitz saving $1.5m on his backup for next season.

Any Vitek trade is a W.

  18. chefboleson

now that’s a fucking W. wasnt long ago at all kahkonen was the hot thing in minnesota but fell off in SJ, yea he’s a UFA but he’s a great reclamation project, probably not even the objective of this trade but a comeback from him wouldn’t be unlikely in my eyes at all. good swap

  19. GartThrowaway

If there was no “goalie of the future” to be had at this deadline, paying a third and Vitek for next year’s backup and 3 million more in cap space feels like a pretty pretty good consolation prize heading into a summer where there should be some good goalies up for grabs

  20. FreeOJ32

Gonna miss Vitek, such a likable player. I’m sad it didn’t work out and had to end this way. I’ll miss the Vitek chants after big saves, that always got me so pumped up to hear those.

  21. mustachiolong

Okay so this is an audition for Kahkonen to be the primary that people have been saying he deserves and allows Allen to be our backup for next year allowing Schmid/Daws to cook in the AHL next year while we go get a big goalie in the offseason.

    I’m okay with this now.

But holy shit this has been whiplash today.

  22. diego-fuego

If we let him walk in the summer and revisit the goalie market then for a true starter, then great trade. Especially since it gets us out from under Vitek’s contract. If this is meant to be the guy… less great…

  23. ricardofitzpatrick

San Jose, a Devils goalie elephant graveyard

  24. mxskater

This means the Allen move allows schmid and daws to go back to the ahl

  25. NYDevilsFan

Well this certainly beats the 2022 deadline of Fitzy « owing it to his players » to get a goalie and going out and get Andrew Hammond from the AHL and getting lit up during his time here

  26. falaris

To get the Sharks to take on VV for only a 7th with no retention on our part is huge. Saves us from either buying him out or hoping a team takes him back in a trade for their goalie.

    Win for Fitzy.

  27. Crumbssss_

I been saying for months that Kahkonen could be the move. A young goaltender who’s never really had a chance to prove himself. Getting Vitek’s contract off the books is an added bonus

  28. McRibs2024

Sad honks. Bummer VV couldn’t regain his footing. A really fun year last year followed by a train wreck.

  29. TediousSpark

Wish VV had worked out better. Enjoy The Bay 🫡
