I’m an Oilers fan and I’ve been arguing with anyone who disagreed that this was inevitable for the last 5 years. Barring injury it’s a guarantee now, he wants it and will/can play until he gets it. Although that’s possibly next year, two maximum.
I am absolutely stoked to watch that game. Being witness to one of the greatest achievements in hockey history is one of the best joys of being a fan.

The real career goals record should be 975, not 894, but the NHL has always had, shall we say, a creative way of considering statistics.
1. Gordie Howe – 975 (801 NHL + 174 WHA)
2. Wayne Gretzky – 940 (894 + 46)
3. Bobby Hull – 913 (610 + 303)
4. Alex Ovechkin – 848
I know mine is probably a minority viewpoint – which does not by itself mean it’s wrong – but it’s never made sense that the NHL continues to refuse to recognize NHA, PCHA, WCHL/WHL, and WHA records.
EDIT: Yep, and here come the downvotes. I guess it would never occur to some of you that the NHL could choose to follow the NFL and MLB in actually acknowledging other leagues that it absorbed or supplanted. 🤣
