It is because he is not in New York and all New Yorkers can think about is themselves.
jaded-optimist
McDavid has the personality of plain toast which doesn’t help.

Snoop’s right. I have been saying this since HS.
I feel like they dont make any efforts
Now granted McDavid and Crosby arent exactly M. Personality but still

Tbf I don’t think Mcdavid wants to be marketed. But he’s right the NHL sucks ass at marketing and it’s their own fault. Like why could I not watch him play against Mackinnon last night just because I don’t live in the area. Get rid of the blackouts!

He is right.
Whether the stars are likeable or not, they still need to be marketed to grow the game and increase fan support in all NHL cities.
Probably the worst of all major sports leagues for marketing.
My guess is that most if not all the owners are filling their pockets and they don’t fill the need to market the game more. This type of complacency is already killing the game in certain markets and will continue to do so unless the Board of Governors and Bettman change course.

He has a $100M contract and when he won $1M during the all stars skills competition, he could have donated it. Nope, he kept it. But this follows the shitty NHL marketing strategy: feature marquee players on mediocre teams and build a WWF type hype around local markets. If NHL had made skills at competition « winner gets to donate to great cause » it would have made headlines. Instead, greed ruled the day and people said, « whatever ».
On the upside of NHL marketing, we got to watch people throw salmon at each other in Seattle at the Winter classic. That whole program was so hilariously cringe and over produced I had to look away at how bad it was (and I’m not just talking about the shitty camera work during the game).
Our local AHL affiliate does next to nothing to build loyalty and/or marketing (except raising ticket prices). NHL forgets that people only have so much money to spend and baseball, basketball, football are all competing for $200+ seats. Tone deaf management. lol, wait till they hit up Phoenix taxpayers for that spaceship stadium proposal.
Anyway, lets see if Edmonton makes it past the first round.

And I feel like people will be mad if (when?) the league starts putting Bedard’s face everywhere. But 1) he’s in Chicago, and 2) he seems to embrace some sort of media.
Hopefully the attention Bedard gets could help the NHL grow… and by default make people more aware of McDavid.
BaseballSafe6317
Well when you black out so many games….great mgmt

Is this a real quote lmao?

Facts. I feel like the NHL makes it hard for new fans coming in to learn more about the league and who the stars are.

I don’t really mind . There’s something I like about being a hockey guy and not and NFL/NBA guy. The egos are smaller .

It’s not that easy.
It’s a team sport. It’s true McDavid is unbelievable, but it’s not like he can win it all on his own.
It’s not the same as NBA/NFL. There needs to be solid top 4 defense and an amazing goalie, I just don’t think that translates.
Gamgee_Sammy
I agree on the marketing but I also believe there’s a large gap in genuine interest between hockey and the other major three sports in the US.

This happens in all sports where personalities don’t allow for it. Mike Trout is similar. More people probably know who Rempe is than McDavid at this point.
Starsing1491
Ahhhh the mike trout problem
SawsageKingofChicago
The barrier for entry into hockey, even as a fan, is ridiculously high as compared to more popular sports. Even worse for actually playing. No amount of marketing can overcome it.
DelusionsofInsanity
Coyotes seat 2500 fans a game if their lucky. Good job Bettman, you sneaky squeaky clean fuck of a shyster.

He’s way up there in Alberta minding his business and playing great hockey. Different culture than the NBA, Snoop.

Most folks in the US can’t point to Australia on a map.

Ask an American to name any hockey player not names Crosby or Ovi.
Ask an American who is the best hockey player in the world.
Ask an American where Edmonton is.
Some Americans will probably or even eventually know who Bedard is.
The NHL could market the hell out of McDavid and it won’t make a lick of difference because he plays in Edmonton.
Unpopular opinion…..the NHL can’t market a guy who plays in a city most Americans have never heard of.
margifly
To start with, the NHL needs to start teaching their players to substitute the word AH with yeah man I get that, listen to these athletes that’s all you hear is ah….ah……ah
