2. It doesn't feel all that bad considering that Tempe voters picked a landfill over the Coyotes, and every city in the Phoenix area have told them to get lost in some fashion. It doesn't seem like the people in Phoenix don't even care about them anymore. It be hard to considering they have treated the fans like dirt/obviously sandbagging to get out of town.

  3. I'm interested if the government is going to be ok with the league buying the team to flip it like this. It seems like something there has to be against some kind of law.

  4. A new team in 5 years does not soften the blow in any way. A new team is not my team, this current team is my team.

  5. I saw someone on Twitter mention how absurd it is to call the Arizona hockey market not legitimate when the current goal scoring leader grew up in the phoenix area, watching the coyotes, and learning to play there. This whole thing sucks and if I have to see one more jerk in the comments of coyotes posts talking about fking Utah, I’m gonna lose it

  6. One thing about the Arizona market is that sports aren't marketed enough and well. The Coyotes never tried to market to get new fans. They only marketed to people that are already fans. Also, its hard for people to be loyal to a losing team. Diehards will always be there through thick and thin but for the average fan, losing is not fun.

  7. 10:26 … Utah Grizzlies is an awesome name…. so awesome that's what their ECHL team is called that has ties to Colorado AHL and NHL

  8. When they went to Glendale in 2003. They had 21 years to figure it put when they always knew Glendale was temporary.

They didnt want to sign a long term lease with Glendale because they wanted it to be temporary.

They weren't paying their bills (not the reason why they were evicted it was not wanting a long term lease)

They play in a college arena with a 4 year lease to lose a public voting to build an arena in Tempe

Once the talk during the All Star break about Coyotes we find out they're waiting for a public auction that may or may not go through.

This team had way too many chances. And I used to love Phoenix Coyotes back in 1996. But other teams had to relocate for a fraction of this.

Time to move on. Utah was never the top of my list for an NHL team. Quebec and Houston were. Even Atlanta. But they didn't make an effort. Utah did. If the fans want it and an owner can afford it. So be it.

  9. I would feel sorry for the Coyote fans, but the team was originally stolen from Winnipeg back in the day! Let’s not forget that it was not a team that originated in Phoenix. They never made money in Phoenix, let’s be honest! Let’s remember it is a Business! If the public wants to buy the team, and set up a Green Bay type of cooperative, so be it. But I doubt any city in the valley will put money into a franchise that went bankrupt once.

  10. When you look at this compared to the A’s situation, what parallels do you draw? What similarities do you see? Do you see this out of a common set of issues?

  11. Hearing conflicting things. Is it true that they didn’t pay bills in Glendale? Craig Morgan says that’s not true

  12. 10:30 Utah Grizzlies is currently the name of an ECHL team already playing in the city (not at Delta Center, they have their own barn that they share with an NBA G League team). The ECHL team is I believe the 2nd Utah Grizzlies franchise. It has some history in the city so it would be appropriate should the ECHL team decide to leave. I've heard Boston has a huge problem with the team using a bear name though

  13. 12:00 I asked some Arizona fans on Reddit. They said they would rather keep the team BUT if the team leaves and they get a new team, they want the current ownership to have no part in it, which is honestly fair.

  14. Also, the AHL's Tuscon Roadrunners are moving to Mullet Arena after this season should the Coyotes move

  15. When they moved from Winnipeg they were troubled, they have had nothing but trouble while in Arizona mostly due to the NHL and ownership. If nothing changes then nothing will change, its a crap ownership and will screw over SLC in about twenty years as well.

  16. As a Southern California native and die hard Anaheim Ducks fan…I don’t want the Coyotes to leave Arizona.

  17. Although this team did not have much success over the years in Arizona. Hockey coming to Arizona is having other forms of success in the league right now. Who would have thought a guy from Arizona would score the most goals in a regular season over the last 30 years. Auston Mathews and Tage Thompson are from Arizona, perhaps the league wouldn't be blessed with these great players without the coyotes being in Arizona. Hopefully they can get a team back soon, always sad to a see a team in any pro sports league have to move.

  18. Salt Lake is really pushing to get another Winter Olympics so there is the need/desire to build a large hockey arena for that. In fact, the IOC is visiting Salt Lake this week as part of the Olympic bid process. The SLC area has the 12,600 seat Maverik Center where their ECHL team plays, there's the Delta Center that can have an ice rink (and could host other Olympic events such as figure skating) and another large arena could make their bid even more successful. So, the NHL could see the future is brighter in SLC even if the Delta Center isn't the ideal hockey venue in the short-term.

  19. If you're a fan of a team (regardless of sport) in 2024 and you don't understand that ownership sees the team as an asset to be bought and sold first and foremost, or that the league sees you only as a source of revenue, you're kinda naive and that's kind of on you. It's happened in Oakland with the A's, it's happening in Arizona with the Coyotes, and it'll probably happen again with the White Sox or the Diamondbacks or one of the Florida baseball teams. These brands do not deserve your loyalty and it should be obvious at this point.

  20. Why does the geography not matter? It should matter, and SHOULD have mattered before. Playing an ice sport in a desert while an amazing feat, is just, not what we need. Was not what we needed. THESE WERE MY THOUGHTS BEFORE HEARING ABOUT WATER RIGHTS.

  21. This completely different than the A’s. Their are very few true Yokes fans. Phx is the transplant capital of the US. So most hockey fans are rooting for their old home team. Since hockey is a fortune to play in Phx/Scottsdale area most parents don’t enroll their kids. So it basiclly a rich white sports , and in marketing news Women don’t want thier kids watching hockey. Yes it is the fights

  22. I don't feel bad for fans i feel bad for coyote players. The biggest name in hockey Gretzky couldn't save em nothing will. Other nhl teams been supporting the team to long. Send them to Quebec!

  23. Hockey will still be in the valley with ASU which has used their warm weather to attract some Canadian talent to the valley instead of playing Juniors in Canada. I was 6 when I attended the last whalers home game and their departure early into my love of hockey hurt. As time went on I began to enjoy college hockey a ton and now I am a UConn men's hockey season ticket holder. Even though I became a flyers fan and used to watch them nonstop as a kid and college student the last decade or so I have lost interest in the NHL reg season and enjoyed college hockey's parity and environments much more. I think if Yotes fans that decide to support ASU will see while losing the NHL is tough entertaining hockey is still in their metro via ASU.

  24. Yokes fan here. I’m 19 and only grew up knowing them as Arizona, I know they were from Winnipeg first, but there always been Arizona too me. I often hear this move compared to the Oakland raiders/A’s move but it isn’t quite the same. Even if the coyotes move to Utah, I’ll still probably cheer for them, that won’t change, but what will change is live hockey. I was raised on hockey, going to games as often as possible, and knowing that I won’t be able to share the live hockey experience with my little sister, and my kids is devastating. If an As fan still wants baseball, the giants arnt that far away, for us, we need to go to LA or Vegas if I wanted to share hockey with my future family. It’s a dagger to the god damn chest, not just for losing an “Arizona team” but losing the live hockey experience, and not being able to share it with the future.

  25. Quit crying brodie. This sad franchise got 15 more seasons in az. that it didn't deserve. 15 seasons of nhl hockey that could have been better used in a market with fans that supported and cared about nhl hockey. Instead the little man's hard on for az. prevented that. Ownership never stepped up running this franchise on the cheap as fan support wasn't there-bottom three in attendance most seasons. And when fans/az. had a chance to step up to save yotes with tempe vote they overwhelmingly said NO to that. This move was way too late. Should have happened 15 years ago An embarassment for nhl to let this drag on so long making nhl look like a bush league.

  26. The promise of reactivation doesn't soften the blow. I know I don't believe Merullo will have the motivation to be an NHL owner once he gets his $1B from the NHL. He'll hem and haw for 1/2 to 1 year and then claim he just cannot find a way to make it work. I think we've been played and now NHL is gone from the Valley. We aren't really suprised, but that doesn't make it easier.

  27. The A’s have it bad, and although I feel bad for the fans of the Coyotes but it never worked in the desert 🌵. They had more than enough time to change things but it just never worked out.

  28. I saw right-wingers – the political kind – destroy St. Louis and chase away the football team, the way they chased away or sold off so many of their large corporations. I have experienced my own hockey team in Atlanta leaving, not from lack of support (15k in a 17k building every game is good support) but from stupidity of ownership. There is nothing you can do as a fan. I think there should be much higher barriers to relocation for a sports team, because it is in a sense a community undertaking. That said – Phoenix does not deserve another team because this fiasco is not on the owners, but on the greedy right-wingers who screwed up that state. Solution – move to a blue state.

  29. Arizona politicians have seemingly made it difficult to get an arena done but also part of this is the NHLPA isn't happy with playing in the mullet arena and poor ownership history and the fanbase gets screwed Bettman has been extremely patient during this process.

  30. As a former season ticketholder and PA announcer of the HARTFORD WHALERS, I totally empathize with the fans of the Coyotes. We lost our team in 1997 because our two time convicted felon, Governor John Rowland sacrificed the Whale in order to pursue the Patriots. Obviously, he lost both. Gary Bettman loves big markets. The NHL will eventually return to Auston Matthews' home state. That will be Bettman's swan song before he finally, belatedly retires. (Thank God!)

  31. You aren't wrong to wonder what is really going on. We hockey fans in SLC went through this before with Larry Miller. He bought the Golden Eagles , our minor league hockey team so he could build the Delta Center. He kept the team just long enough to make a little money and then promptly sold the team. Only reason SLC has a hockey team now is the Nordiques moved to Colorado and we had won the 2002 bid for the Olympics so a hockey arena was built. The Denver Grizzlies then moved here because we got the Olympics. We had such low attendance they had to move to the ECHL to keep a team who just manages to stay here.

Now Ryan Smith wants to build a new arena and wants a hockey team. Why do I feel like dejavu all over again? NHL shouldn't believe Smith's promises, he won't have the fan base to keep the team solvent and the league will be back in the same spot as they are with the Coyotes in a few years. Bad idea all around.

  32. All the pain and the tanking to finally draft some good young forwards and it’s just going to end up being utah’s kickstart into the league, that is so brutal.

  33. I'm sorry, but they don't deserve another chance. They've gotten so much grace already. It just doesn't work in Arizona.

  34. This is karma. Phoenix lured the original Winnipeg Jets back in 1997 and it was 14 years before the NHL went back to Winnipeg. I don't think the NHL will expand back to Arizona unless there is a different ownership group

  35. Hockey in the desert is a Bettman baby and we will do everything in his power to keep or have a team in Phoenix.

  36. Phoenix should have moved more than a decade ago. If it had been a Canadian team they would have been relocated in 2011. They're running like a glorified bush league team and they're an embarrassment to the NHL. Move the Coyotes and Panthers. Florida could make a cup run and still not sell out. Absolute garbage markets.

  37. Feels fine up here is Salt Lake. Don't worry, nobody up here wants the Cyote's name. You can keep it for your expansion team.

  38. those fans got a team playing in a basketball arena, so, they built them a hockey arena, didn't work out, they ask for another one, the people said no, they ask for another one, still pending. this situation has been garbage for 20 years, its time to move on

  39. AM is gonna take the $1bil from sale and not build anything. yotes are gone for good from AZ

  40. I’m sure if they could do it all over again in the early 2000s they would have built an arena for both the Coyotes and, the Suns. The problem is you have all these arenas in the Phoenix metro and it’s like let’s build another one that will solve the problem? 🤔🙄

  41. I’m sorry but it’s time for them to relocate. I mean they have tried 4 different cities and all 4 of them said no. And this is far different then like what the A’s are doing the league obviously wants to be there but at what point do you just have to say they don’t want us let’s go somewhere else?
