Appears to be behind a paywall. They let me read the first paragraph though!

If you don’t have a subscription, and your browser lets you open pages in “reader mode” (like Safari) you can do that for The Athletic and read the whole thing.

But I was told that bald man is bad?

This season really emphasized that Larkin is THE GUY on the team. I hadn’t doubted his leadership or overall ability as a player before, but when surrounded with talent, he really showed how he gets guys to rise to the occasion through his own example, just like all of the great captains before him have done on their own squads.

I’m unable to get around it, would someone mind posting in here what the new focus is?

Am I crazy, am I missing the part where they had a conversation that affected his mindset?

EDIT: My bad when I looked at it before it didn’t load the whole article. Not sure what happened.

I think of the Wings as a blue collar team with hardworking blue collar workers. There aren’t any elite rockstars, but Larkin is definitely willing to put himself on the line for his team and yes, he’s also human and has faced incredible adversity in his personal life and on the ice. That’s true of many of the other players too, some are brand new dads with all that comes with having infants at home and being away from them for up to 4 months over the length of the season has to be really hard on the whole family but part of the costs of being a professional sports figure. Injury, illness for players, staff, and their families also affects their focus day-to-day. In the case of the Bertuzzi trade, some things just purely suck, losing your best friend at the most critical part of the season will have an impact whether we like it or not. Larks is human with feelings as are we all and has the right to embrace the suck just like each of us does. Having money doesn’t change that for those fans who feel that players earning lots of money seems to equate to not having anything to gripe about.

However, Coach LaLonde said the right thing at the right time and Larks was ready to learn from it. My experience with physical growth is we go through spurts when it happens rapidly, almost too fast, and we don’t have time to adjust before something else comes along that we need to adjust to. I think the team and individual players and management have moments like that too. That’s part of growing this beautiful game. It’s uncomfortable but worth it. When we really need to worry is when people and progress stagnate. Luckiky, the stats don’t lie, since 2016, the Wings have bottomed out and are now steadily climbing in all areas. Are we finished rebuilding? No, and we never should rest on our laurels, but we also need to grow as fans along with the team members if we want to help the team continue to move towards being a contender for years to come.
