I think Tampa, Detroit, Ottawa, Washington and the Islanders will fight over the last two spots because I can't see Boston, Toronto or Florida out of the top 3 and I think the Canes Rangers and Devils are going to be powerhouses in the Metropolitan.
Wings are getting increasingly better so did the Sens who now have a Vezina trophy goalie in front of the pikes, Islanders are always in the mix and the Caps did make trades that sends the signal to the rest of the league that they are going for one last all-in push to give Ovi another cup. If Tampa slips outside of a playoff place, getting draft picks as well as making room for Geekie, Groshev and other promising lightning players would not be a bad thing. I don't count on Tampa to win it all and I know this might be the year where they don't reach playoff contention but I just want to see grit and fight. As long as I see this, Imma be a happy fan.
Really surprised you did not mention Mcdonaugh in the leadership discussion as he was a huge part of that during his first tenure and it's a big part of why he was brought back. That being said for the next 4 years this is Victor's team. He was that guy inthe bubble playoffs both on the ice and with the media.
Continued to whittle away the Championship core …. Detroit definitely coming.
Vasi is 30 in 3 days also
I don't care that Stamkos is temporarily wearing a Nashville sweater, he'll ALWAYS be a Bolt! I'm looking forward to the day #91 banner is hoisted into the rafters of Amalie forever!!!
So last season Jake missed 25 games. Could this team handle his loss if he has to sit out a number like that again next season ?
Hot take but I think this is the year Tampa drops out of the playoffs. Man the bolts have lost a ton of depth
Stamkos is a loss on the powerplay. I expect the PP to be different this year, maybe more focus on Point in the slot. The 5-on-5 should be better this year. While Mac will help, defense is not just about defensemen. More defensively skilled forewards will help here.
Go Bolts!
I feel like we got slightly better. Any analysis on Tampa is null and void until we see how the defense system works this season, which I think is the big question everyone wants to know.
Not only that, depth is very much an issue, I don’t know what scoring will look like past the top 3
Great analysis. I don't see Kucherov taking the Captaincy. Just not his thing. Losing Stamkos was HUGE. IF we miss the playoffs, I think JBB is gone. I wish Stammer all the best. Finally, 91>jbb
I think this year is going to be a bit of a transition year for Tampa as a lot has changed, but from next season Tampa should be contending for the Stanley Cup again and here's why:
Tampa still doesn't have the lineup depth they used to have and they only have $730K in cap space, then again, next year they'll have $5,850,000 and that's assuming the salary cap doesn't increase. Their UFA? Atkinson, Glendening, Eyssimont, Perbix, Johansson. None of the key players and if the salary cap rises to 92M then they will have 10M to spend and then they will fill the key positions with better players plus they also have all the 2026 and 2027 Draft picks. Let's also not forget Sheary who has a 2M cap hit and can be replaced with someone better.
As for the Sergachev trade, i like it a lot. Sergy had two major injuries practically one after the other and his 8.5M cap hit for 7 years was way too much the more so having Hedman and McDonagh on the left side. In return Tampa got a second round pick, by far the best prospect they have in Conor Geekie, and JJ Moser, who for a much lower cap hit is more or less capable of replacing Sergachev.
As for signing Guentzel to replace Stamkos, I also like that looking forward. Guentzel should score 90-100 points with Kucherov on the line. On top of that Jake is a much better player defensively which should result in fewer missed goals. The only question remains what the PP will look like without Stamkos. This is where I think Tampa will lose a lot. Leadership? Stamkos is out, but McDonagh was a captain in New York, he is a great leader, Lightning should be fine on that matter.
Guentzel – Point – Kucherov
Hagel – Cirelli –
______– Paul – Atkinson
Curious what the filled out roster would look like (and who Geekie plays with)
Hedman is 34?! Makes me feel old
Id be shocked if they miss the playoffs
Guentzel can score but Stamkos 1 timer shots from Kucherov being his goes to passer will be missed… they might struggle on the powerplay
Powerplay bound to take a dip, will be better overall 5 on 5, especially defensively
I think they look stronger than last season.
As a flyers fan having atkinson on your second line is not a good sign
88 will decide TBL fate. Has to be better than past session
To anyone who says "oh TBL's two cups were in weird situations, we don't count them", I just say "well why didn't your team win then? if it was so easy?"
That’s a sharp jersey.
JBB handed those 8 year extentions for players with very little leverage, now he traded Sergy and didn't resign Stamkos cause of his mistakes. I think the team would've been better with Stamkos + other top 6 forward and more defense oriented approach. I don't think Guentzel is worth 9 mil but we will see. Still expect playoffs, but forward depth could've been a lot better.
That's a Tampa fan I'm not sure if what they did will work or not but what they had was starting to not work so I give JBB credit for that. The biggest thing I think this team is going to miss is the leadership of stammer that's hard to replace.
Absolute crater this upcoming year. Stamkos was the unquestioned leader of that team. Now it's gone, now it's a bunch of guys who know each other.
Comi-tragedy of delusion in the 'ACHTUALLLY, it's a business (no kidding) and here's my 500 word dissertation as to why, ending with an insult' comments.
If you don't know how important Stamkos is with just his mere presence, you are unplugged from the actual team.
Signed – a fan who's spent 10's of thousands at Amalie.
Recent teams that stand pat after a Stanley Cup win don't look so good (i.e. the Capitals and Penguins). I think Tampa is doing what they need to do to stay relevant. As much as I love Stamkos, he was a liability on Defense. I think Tampa will be stronger with the moves than they were last season.
I really like what Tampa did… They have a great mix of younger players, mid-age players, and vets… Hedman looks like one of the Ds who can play till 40 and still being very effective… If they're able to summon another Cirelli out of the blue, then they're more than fine…
Maybe a slow start for Tampa and then they come on strong as the season progresses.
For all that other info up there that I cant see, I dont know why youre stopping at top 6/top 4. Doesnt really give a full idea of the team, especially with the importance of depth.
I think we finally reached the tipping point with Tampa….they miss this season.
Not a fan of losing Stammer or Serg but business is business. I hope the additions pan out. I think the team is playoff capable not sure depth of run till we see some of these guys skate with the team.
Does Tampa think Sergy's injury might continue to linger? I could see that as their only way they win these moves.
I think Tampa is going to be good. If they’re well in the hunt come trade deadline they will get some big names and make a run.
I have a feeling Connor Geekie is going to make an appearance and maybe an impact. But an appearance at the very least.
From a Tampa fan, I disagree on the Kuch for captain thing. Even though he’s young there’s a big sentiment around Point becoming captain sooner or later so if Hedman isn’t up to it I’d say Point or McD would have a really solid chance at it.
I hated the Stamkos decision at first, but I have a feeling JBB knows something that most people don’t. I’m willing to bet that the roster overhaul and regaining draft picks will prolong their Cup window.
It was over when they traded for Jeanot lmao
I've been a life long Lightning fan. One of the biggest mistakes I felt the team did the past few years was letting McDonagh go. If you watched his play, he was a second goalie on the ice. He was a defensive defenseman, which helped Vasy tremendously. After his departure, Vasy's numbers began to fall, and he was overworked because the defense wasn't clearing the box. The Lightning had offense, but their two-way play was terrible. JBB is trying to make a team based around Vasy and being better defensively, as shown by the team's GAA last season. Stamkos, unfortunately, didn't help the defensive side of the game, and Sergachev, though had some great offensive numbers, also had more turnovers than an pastry shop. We need players that can play a 2-way game. I see Guentzel like Barkov. Not necessarily in the leadership category, but with his 2-way play. He's solid offensively, but can play defensive and adjust to the play quickly, where Stamkos couldn't. I loved Stamkos as much as any fan, and there is no doubt he is the best Captain the team has ever had, but we need to find a way to win. We don't like the fact the Sunrise Kitty Cats won the Cup.
Tampa is a wildcard team.
Tampa courage to rebuild 🙂
hurts losing stamkos but in the longrun guentzel will be a better signing
tampa mentioned go bolts
