Kris Letang at 62nd overall turning into a near 20 year franchise defenseman.

Honorable mentions to Jake Guentzel and Mark Recchi (4th round).

Lots of people will sleep on Recchi because he played for us almost 35 years ago and then left (before returning as an old man), but a 4th round pick immediately putting up 113 pts plus 34 pts in the playoffs to help lead us to our first cup while having a career of over 1600 games and 1500 points has to be considered.

Kris Letang as a third rounder

  3. baJanbaCon14

Kris letang is the only correct answer

  4. NikolaiCakebreaker

Jagr at 5th overall, or Recchi in the 4th round.

  5. theManWOFear

Letang nudges out Recchi just because he’s played for the Pens his whole career.

  6. daviesdog

It has to be Letang in the third round. Guentzel is a close second.

  7. Princess_Aurora06

Flury is overrated? He’s our best goalie I’ve seen

  8. H4m-Sandwich

For everyone saying Jagr, he told teams he’s not playing for them. He wanted to go to the penguins and play with Lemieux. I wouldn’t necessarily call it a steal. For a steal of a player, Letang.

  9. michaelpath

Man, if we could claim Hornqvist on this one…

  10. Fratguy20

Guentzal tied the post season goals record for rookies mere months after he was called up to the lineup. This propelled us to a Stanley cup victory.

  11. OGSynergy37

Mark Recchi, although Jake may overtake him. 500g, HHOF, 3 Cups. Hell of a resume.

  12. Guentzel or Letang for sure. I guess I’d give Letang the edge since he’s likely gonna be a Pens lifer and Jake is already gone.

  13. Plastic_Brick_1060

    It’s Sid, that lottery…

  14. ForeignWerewolf

Recchi was a great pick but he played large chunks of his career elsewhere. Jake is gone. It’s Letang all the way

  15. Ninegun

Gotta go Letang here. For all the ups and downs, he’s a bonafide franchise #1 d-man we got in the third round. Hard to beat.

  16. smk_235

The answer is Mark Recchi. The man is the 15th leading scorer in NHL history as a 4th round pick.

Honorable mention to Shawn McEachern. 256/579 points out of a 6th round pick is impressive.

I’m surprised at the lack of Mario Lemieux responses in here. Perhaps its just recency bias at work? Without Lemieux the Penguins would most likely move away from Pittsburgh.

  18. JustWannaChill82

To be honest it has to be Jagr. He was easily the best player in that draft and told other teams he wouldn’t come to North America for a couple years. But he told Craig Patrick that he would come to Pittsburgh because Mario Lemieux was his idol

  19. dave6687

Recchi in the 4th, or Guentzel/Letang in the 3rd. Don’t sleep on Murray in the 3rd, short career but obvious value.

  20. dave6687

Koltsov over Simon is criminal. He peaked at 29 points on terrible teams, Simon only had 28 playing with Crosby.

  21. Virtual_Buttons

Not nearly on the same level as those mentioned, but Mad Max Talbot in the 8th round?

  22. MouthofthePenguin

This grid is already making me disappointed in this whole sub. so, there’s that.

  23. dave6687

I think people are just upvoting the first thing they read. A proper poll at the end of this might be a good idea.

  24. wwb1990

Could Crosby at 1:1 still be considered a steal with what he has turned out to be?

  25. hczimmx4

    Malkin.

You can not call #1 overall picks a steal. They literally couldn’t go any higher. Letang gets honorable mention

  26. oxfordclubciggies

    Another for the Letang bandwagon.

  27. kazzman74

Letang. Absolutely Letang followed by Guentzel. If Recchi wasn’t traded and played most of his career here then I would say him, but he only spent 2.5 seasons with us at the beginning of his career
