  1. I'm a NYR fan who relocated to AZ last summer…..bummed that the only hockey team is ASU…..with transplants here…. NHL would succeed

  2. No more expansion for 20-30 years. The league has become too watered down. Too many weak teams in the NHL and farm systems.

  3. Hasn't the NHL tried this already? Already. Already. Milwaukee, San Francisco and Quebec City are far better options.

  4. I think the NHL is desperate to get back into Atlanta, and goimg from 32 to 34 is better than going from 32 to 33.

The NHL could run each conference as a single table if they expand to 34 – play your conference rivals 3 times each, and teams in the other conference 2 times; (16 x 3) + (17 x 2) = 82 games.

I also suspect the NHL has taken note of the NBA's play-in tournament and sees an opportunity to monetize a similar arrangement.

  5. The NHL didn't do anything about the horrible ownership group in Arizona until it was too late and it bit them in the butt.

  6. Phoenix has a large population and potential ticket holders, BUT there is no hockey-crazed market better than Quebec City. Bettman is driven by TV revenues and is less inclined to put teams in hockey hotbeds!

  7. Getting to 36 teams would be a massive hurdle. While I'm confient that the West has plenty of options such as Arizona, Houston, Milwaukee, Kansas City, Portland, etc.
The East is a bit more tricky. Where do you honestly go in the East? Everyone wants Quebec, but its not gonna happen. So that leaves places like Atlanta, Cincinnati, Cleveland, or Indianapolis. Not exactly confidence inspiring.

  8. It's desperation.

None of these leaders stepped up to oust Alex Meruelo. None of these past ownership have known how to market the club and it began burning out the glamour that Phoenix could've been a hockey market.

Cities like Nashville, Dallas, Tampa and Raleigh had their hiccups but rebounded with a loyal fan base and we saw the Panthers finally earn their loyalty in South Florida after winning the cup.

Phoenix….it's just not gonna rebound the second time around.

Oh and one more thing…..no NHL sized arena in Phoenix (Glendale is NOT giving the Coyotes a second chance)

  9. Well of course, Brody will never miss an opportunity to talk about his dearly beloved Coyotes.

  11. If the Yotes do come back, give them a better owner and a better arena. Fans in AZ deserved better.

  12. What if Arizona does get the expansion team and Hartford tries to swoop in for the 34th NHL slot? I'll admit I'm just basing this off of when the mayor tried to lure in the Islanders back in 2018 when it seemed like they had no arena to play in the next season.

  13. Brodie, I was a Coyotes Season Tix Holder from 1999 to 2003 (went in with season tix with a coworker). However, he is a fan of another NFL team (it's been so long, maybe the Penguins), I am and will always be a Sharks fan. Life happened and neither of us had the time to go to the games. Here is the problem that Maricopa County has:
    1) Location. The Stadium has to be centrally located for ALL fans to enjoy.
    2) This creates a problem because the part of the city that can afford to play the sport, will want the stadium in their city, but they don't want to open up land nor help pay for it.
    3) This is the ongoing issue in Phoenix. Hockey fans that will go whoever the team is vs the Big money that only wants the Yotes in their backyard.
    4) Phoenix is A FOOTBALL city First, Basketball second, and Baseball Third. So the Coyotes, WILL ALWAYS take a back seat to those teams, EVEN if they are winning.

Like one fan said, most people living in Phoenix are transplants from other states, and they tend to have loyalty to the place they moved to (assuming it has an NHL team).
So, I will go regardless, but this is trying to force a team where the city, as a whole, does not and will not support. So, award the franchise to a city that would be able to fully support it. Another Canadian city should get first dibs. Wisconsin or an area in the Northeast, should get second dibs.

  14. They need to put a team in Quebec City before they go back to Arizona. Bettman won’t let it happen because he hates French Canadians.

  15. And it sure did not take long for all the naysayers to jump into the comments. It is as if an alarm sounded anytime Brodie or any other sports broadcaster brings up the Coyotes, then it is time to troll and bash the idea of bringing another team to Arizona. Truly unreal.

On to the positive, this is a great development where there is at least something. Now it is mainly just a first of so many steps, but again is a first one. The fact there is a political leader putting himself out there to say he is willing to work with those interested in fulfilling this goal. The lack of political support was one of the reasons why the Coyotes ceased to exist 9 months ago. It will now take action, not just words. And Coyotes fans will need to be patient.

  16. I think the NHL will eventually go to 40 teams, but not for a minimum 20 years. 2 Conference of 20 teams with 4 Divisions of 5 teams each. My 8 expansion teams would be Arizona, Portland, Milwaukee, Kansas City, Houston, Atlanta, Quebec City and Hartford. Close calls would be San Francisco, Austin, Cleveland, Omaha, Cincinnati and possible a second team in the GTA.

  17. What is the NHL’s desperation to have a team in AZ? Is it because Bettman wants to make sure he was right to have a team there? Is it because players like Auston Matthews & a bunch northern transplant kids are there who need to have an NHL team to grow NHL pool of players? I say, AZ, ATL & Quebec get in line after Houston.

  18. The NHL is not ready to expand. The two reasons are 1) talent pool is not ready to expand. 2) The talent pool of officials is not good enough yet. Let’s get these right first !!!

  19. When this happened to me in Los Angeles when the Raiders and Rams moved, I just didn’t like football and I didn’t just watch football anymore. I wasn’t really a fan until I moved to Indianapolis when I started paying attention to the Colts the way I see it I had no football team route for in Los Angeles.

  20. Arizona will support the NHL and got screwed out of the Coyotes ..A good owner like the VGK Foley they would be a huge success especially if the tax payers aren’t on the hook for building an arena .

  21. Houston, Kansas City, Portland and maybe even Milwaukee would make more sense for an expansion team especially since the NHL has either never been to those markets or its been 50+ years in KCs case.

But I think 32 teams is more than enough right now. Like even the NFL isnt looking to expand beyond their 32 so.

  22. With so many big untapped hockey markets in need of teams, I think the hockey community needs to start seriously discussing the idea of turning the NHL into a multi-tiered league. The NHL has the unique need to represent both the US and Canada equally which the other big sports leagues don't have, resulting in multiple big American markets that would otherwise already have teams being snubbed, putting the NHL at a major numerical disadvantage in the US compared to its rivals. The MLB and the NBA both have 29 (soon to be 31 teams) American teams, while the NHL only has 24. With multiple major American cities all lined up with hungry hockey fans and ownership salivating to throw their money at the league, why crush the opportunities? Just put all of these untapped markets into a 2nd tier NHL league with promotion and relegation between League 1 and League 2. Not only would this system give everyone representation, but it would also open the door for more markets, both big and small, as well as bringing back defunct teams like the Nordiques, Whalers, Scouts, Stingers, and Racers. I think this would make for a great video.

  23. I do think the NHL is better positioned than the other pro leagues to make the jump to 36. Being popular in Canada has gotten them to 32 on the backs of markets the NFL, NBA, and MLB would never consider, while leaving large US markets like Phoenix, Atlanta, and Houston available. That's 3 prime options right there, and there are other viable small-medium markets that are definitely doable like Kansas City, Portland, or Quebec. A second (and probably third) Toronto area team would be financially viable, although league politics would obviously be a hurdle. Versus where are the other leagues going to expand at this point? The NBA and MLB (sort of) are obviously trying to get into Las Vegas, but then what?

  24. Glendale, AZ already has a hockey venue. All the former team had to do was pay the lease that they agreed to.

  25. If I'm an owner I vote no. AZ has been a disaster from day 1. Same thing with Atlanta, they've already failed twice.

  26. An option to consider is for another NHL team to move from its current location to Phoenix metro. For example, the New York City metro area has three NHL teams, so why not consider moving one of the teams? I know that NYC has a very large population, but the other three major leagues only have two teams each in the NYC area.

There are two teams in the LA metro area, but with much of LA burning to the ground and the inept political mismanagement of LA and California, why not consider moving the LA Kings to the Phoenix area? The Anaheim Ducks should be enough to satisfy the hockey fans of SoCal, especially since Orange County is perhaps the most normal region of SoCal.

I am not a person who believes that teams should be fixed to current locations for eternity. Without expansions and franchise relocations, then the South and West would have none of their teams. For example, in greater LA, all of the teams either relocated from elsewhere (Dodgers, Rams, Lakers, Clippers, Chargers) or were expansion teams (Angels, Kings, Ducks). Since it may not be feasible to expand continuously, then some franchise relocations are necessary so that regions with thriving and fast-growing populations gain teams. Otherwise, we would still be having absurd examples like two MLB teams remaining in St. Louis, which had a 2024 population estimated at 275,506 and currently declining at a rate of -2.22% annually. https://worldpopulationreview.com/us-cities/missouri/st-louis

  27. different US and Canadian Cities deserve a chance before Arizona gets a team!!!!!!!, funny Winnipeg had to wait 15 years yet you want to get the coyotes a team right away?

  28. Thanks for the update Brodie!

Long are the days when the Kings were the only west coast team. Going to 36 is the natural progression for the growth of the league and the NHL has pioneered new markets of late with Las Vegas. Having a greater density of teams in the Western Conference would be helpful with growing the interest in the league. And the bring back the 6 division-6 team concept which would focus on more divisional rivalries. Arizona would fill that gap in the southwest, while the addition of Houston and Atlanta would cover more of the southeast region, plus a in-state Texas rivalry.

  29. NHL should expand to 35 teams and change to a 5 team divsional format where playoffs are fully decided by divional standings. It will completely change the league, but will make the season more exciting.

  30. Hopefully they don't have to depend on a vote for an arena. The people already voted no. Maybe some billionaire will pay for one out of pocket out of the kindness of his heart.

  31. The NHL isnt missing the Coyotes. They had over 25 years to sort their issues out. To get a new NHL team the expansion fee's could be anywhere from $750 million to a billion dollars, plus the cost of the arena…hmmm if I am a rich business man I would reconsider…but thats just me.

  32. I try to keep up with this news, but I actually missed this update. Thanks Brodie!

  33. Phoenix needs an NHL team again. We want to see Coyotes 🆚 Golden Knights desert showdown rivalry back and new rivalry with Coyotes 🆚 Utah Yeti or Mammoth

  34. I would like to see Arizona have an actual opportunity with competent leadership and ownership. The early days of the Coyotes were looking promising.

  35. Noooooooo…this isn't a hockey market and the equalization money sent to Arizona over the decades should never happen again. There should be a 20yr ban on even having this discussion..

  36. 3:50 "[Arizona Coyotes] didn't necessarily need to lose their team"

Out of every team in NHL history – very few deserved to lose teams….Atlanta Flames, Atlanta Thrashers, Phoenix/Arizona Coyotes, and the Cleveland Barons are on a SHORT LIST…

Over 28 years the Coyotes LOST MONEY for the NHL…of COURSE they needed to lose their team. EVERY HOCKEY FAN KNEW THIS…

There is a reason why Detroit and Vancouver DID NOT lose teams, but Atlanta and Phoenix DID…just common sense.

STOP STEALING CANADA'S NATIONAL SPORT – WITHOUT CANADIAN VIEWSHIP AND MONEY – THE NHL CANNOT EXIST – AND CANADIANS HATE PROPPING UP DYING SOUTHERN FRANCHISES…

Between 2012-2021 thirteen American teams lost revenue for the league (in millions USD) – ALL AMERICAN TEAMS

    – Florida (-195.9) – GARY BETTMAN EXPANSION TEAM

    – Arizona (-141.6) – GARY BETTMAN RELOCATION

    – NY Islanders (-132.1)

    – Carolina (-108.8) – GARY BETTMAN RELOCATION

    – Tampa (-74.4) – GARY BETTMAN EXPANSION TEAM

    – Buffalo (-59.9)

    – Anaheim (-79.6) – GARY BETTMAN EXPANSION TEAM

    – Columbus (-76.0) – GARY BETTMAN EXPANSION TEAM

    – San Jose (-13.3)

    – Nashville (-64.1) – GARY BETTMAN EXPANSION TEAM

    – Minnesota (-55.1) – GARY BETTMAN EXPANSION TEAM

    – St. Louis (-43.9)

    – Colorado (-23.5) – GARY BETTMAN RELOCATION

Meanwhile every team in Canada generated money – and since it is a revenue sharing league – Winnipeg and Ottawa have to share profits with Miami, and Anaheim, and Phoenix and Atlanta…

    – Montreal (+678.2)

    – Toronto (+634.2)

    – Edmonton (+139.4)

    – Vancouver (+215.9)

    – Calgary (+70.1)

    – Ottawa (+50.9)

    – Winnipeg (+4.9)

The NHL does not need TWO MORE MARKETS THAT CANNOT GENERATE PROFIT….(Atlanta, Phoenix, or Houston)….

Between 2012 and 2021 the Arizona Coyotes lost $141.6 million in losses.

The Arizona Coyotes were a net loss team since 1997 – meaning the team overall lost money over the past 28 years – they NEVER generated money for the league.

Winnipeg moved to Phoenix in 1996…Phoenix Coytes NEVER GENERATED MONEY FOR THE NEXT 28 YEARS….

By 2011 Winnipeg CAME BACK…and had better attendance than Arizona, and generated more revenue annually than Arizona, and Winnipeg had a higher franchise value than Arizona….

Why did they leave? They went to a worse market – and lost money for almost 30 years…

    – Phoenix lost their team in 2024….Winnipeg had to wait 15 years for a new team (1996-2011)

    – I get that Phoenix is one of the top ten largest cities in America (10th – 4,845,832 population)

    – so is Houston (5th – 7,149,642 population), and Atlanta (6th – 6,104,803 population) and both are larger than Phoenix and also don't have NHL teams – those are the cities in the South are competing with to get an expansion team.

    – Phoenix has no NHL arena.

    – the renderings proposed by Muerelo in 2024 were for an area, practice facility, hotels, restaurants, a casino etc.

    – the price tag for the arena is approximately – $500 million

    – the price tag for the entire district was approximately – $3 billion

    – Phoenix has no LAND – the starting bid for land started at – $68.5 million

    – this parcel of land for auction – North of Loop 101 on border of Scottsdale Road has:

    – no existing infrastructure

    – no water rights

    – no sewage system built

    – no road access

    – after paying $70 million USD for the land – you will need to build roads, sewage systems, get access to water rights, build infrastructure before you build the arena ($500 million)

Therefore the total cost to build will ACTUALLY be higher than $3 billion – you still need to build sewage systems, roads, and acquire water rights…those were not included in the $3 billion proposal.

    – land $68.5 million

    – arena $500 million

    – district $3 billion

    – PLUS YOU NEED ROADS, SEWAGE, WATER RIGHTS….so not $3 billion – actually quite more than $3 billion…..

    – plus you need to BUY an expansion team (probably $1 billion minimum)

The last NHL team to sell was the Ottawa Senators for $950 million – the Arizona Coyotes were sold for $1.2 billion.

So….$4,068,500,000 MINIMUM…for an NHL team that in 28 years LOST MONEY….

How is a team that lost $141.6 million dollars ever going to recoup those losses???

You would have to find the WORLD'S LEAST NTELLIGENT BILLIONAIRE to spend 4 billion on a team in the desert that has proven it CANNOT generate revenue…

Arizona was overall at a net loss for 28 years – so realistically how many years would it take to recoup $3 billion? or $4 billion?

One of the lower valued teams – Columbus generates about $30 million a year in profit.

    $30 million x 100 years = $3 Billion

    $30 million x 135 = $4,050,000,000

135 years of continuous profit is still not enough to pay for the district and expansion team….

Winnipeg, the smallest market in professional sports generated $4.9 million between 2012-2021….Phoenix lost $141.6 million…

(Winnipeg LOST over $40 million duing covid 2019-2020, but was still NET PLUS in revenue….)

    Fun Fact:

Quebec City (839,311) has more people than Winnipeg (834,678)
