At 13:28, the NHL put a claim in for a 5 second clip of Trevor Linden. Instead of re-uploading the whole video, I trimmed out the segment. Here is the transcript of what was removed:
"Simply because of the cost. The Canucks gave a first and a third for a player who only scored four goals as a member of the Capitals."
as a leaf fan in Vancouver at that time. nobody cared for the Canucks until burke came. he destroyed the apathy of the worst hockey fans, and made their fans great.
"to contender" hahah that's the biggest joke I've heard in the last 5 years
I thought that was Trump in the thumbnail.
None of this comes close to what Sam Pollack used to pull off as GM of the Canadiens (Not remotely close) One brilliant genius move literally won the Canadiens 4 Cups in a row – No one can top that
we would have a cup already if they kept Burke. Best GM we've ever had.
burkey imho did a pretty good job … now this 2024/25 team is tanking from a pretend contender back to whatever they normally and historically were
i thought that was trump for a second. burke had no success in toronto, although he inherited a huge mess. leafs need to trade marner now for some depth. i could care less about the numbers hes put up this regular season. none of what hes doing will work in the playoffs
You should've mentioned that Peter Zezel only played half season because of Burke's own pettyness. As he requested a trade out east so he could be closer to his family in Toronto since his niece was terminally ill with cancer. Burke traded him to Anaheim the team furthest away from Toronto in the league for future considerations and Zezel promptly retired from hockey. He was a spiteful bitch himself and paiting him as a hero in part 1 is kinda sickening.
As a Leafs fan I will always appreciate Burkie for what he did to the team. No, that's not satire. Without him, there is no Kessel or JVR. Similar to Canucks fans, without Burkie there are no Sedin twins. He gets flack, sure, but he's the GM I'd have on my team 10/10 times come hell or high water.
Signing Messier didn't doom the franchise for decades, your implying at least 20/30 years, that makes no sense.
I don’t know Donald Trump was a GM
I really wouldn't mind seeing a video on his time as GM with other teams
Maybe do a series on multiple different GM's and Coaches at certain points of their career.
I either forgot or never heard about the rift between Keenan and Burke. That was some compelling stuff!
The Canucks had 3 great draft years in four years. 2015 was Brock Boeser. 2017 was Elias Pettersson. 2018 was Quinn Hughes. If they had only taken Tkachuk in 2016 instead of Olli Juolevi, they would probably have a SC by now.
Zeezle??😂
I can see how underwhelming the picks Burke made in the 2000 draft class but at the position he was at who would have been a good pick? The 2000 class is rather weak and I don’t really see any center that would have contributed to the Canucks in the early 2000s
Classic mistake of some sports business people is treating contracts and players like costs leading to success, not assets which can create growth and value which can lead to success. Not using free agency and trades to slowly build squad value up means you are mediocre. Not drafting well on top of it makes you just bad.
Burke, and afterwards Nonis, laid the foundation that would eventually become one of the best Canuck groups. Gillis did some tweaking but the core was already there for the push towards 2011.
great video what about mike gillis next?
The Bure trade is a loss. But Jovanivski is a good return. Jovo played 7 years with the Canucks and was a staple on the blue lines Bure had 2 60 goal season in Florida but was out of the league by 03.
Great video. Burke has to be in conversation for best GM in Canucks history. I think he’s runner up behind Pat Quinn.
Peter Zeeeezel Lol.
Canucks should go back to those jerseys.
If Burke had the capital to work with, he wouldve brought the cup to Vancouver
Can you make a video of downfall of canucks post 2011 and maybe a video on Nonis/Gillis era as a whole
Chaos to contenders to their fixed loss against Boston… Canucks should have won with relative ease, but papa Campbell wanted baby Campbell to win a Cup.
Drafting the Sedins was a brilliant coup. Gretzky, i wish, ended up there with Bure..my other favorite player ever w/Gretz & Datsyuk
I was stuck in an elevator with Burke when he was GM of the Leafs. Nice guy, but he wouldn't tell me anything about trade deadline deals. So I gave him my theories. He chuckled. 30m later we were free and we shook hands.
Bure trade deserves more credit.
Jovo for all all his flaws, made the all star team as for the Canucks 3 times , and was a team Canada Olympian x2 and one time for,the World Cup.
Chaos to contender, funny, your next video should be titled: Contender back to Chaos
Thats not how you say Peter Zezel
Burke traded trevor linden, brought in mark messier as captain and hired mike keenan as coach. I challenge anyone to find a GM who made worse moves. In Vancouver Burke was an arrogant ahole.
You make some really good Canucks docs. I feel you could make a part II talking about Burke’s replacement Dave Nonis and the trades, drafts and signings he made along with any drama that might have gone on behind the scenes and then do a part III with Mike Gillis. Just an idea…
All I can say is I had a hiatus from cheering for my hometown team Oilers because I had a crush on the Russian Rocket😊❤ so dont say I didnt give you anything!!😂
Id love to see a video like this about the Ottawa Senators.
Landing Messier didn't "doom the franchise for decades". Had we not signed Messier, we likely never would have traded Linden and gotten Bertuzzi for the WCE era just 4 years later, wouldn't have drafted the Sedins, and Naslund might not have ended up developing into the player he became.
I get the hate for Messier but if you're going to make a documentary, you shouldn't allow that hate to skew the facts of what happened.
Burke is a very interesting point in this team’s history. He saved the team financially, he saved us from Keenan, and built an exciting roster. But the goalie graveyard that happened here while he was GM ultimately cost us any playoff success.
But hey, at least we made it there. Keenan wasn’t able to do even that.
Brian Burke, the worst GM in Canuck history
