  1. Love Buttons draft commentary and his rankings are among the best. Dude knows his prospects.

  2. Excellent interview with a hockey mind I believe we all respect. I was surprised with his big support of Martone. I had him as one of the bottom two on my draft prospect top four. I like Misa after Schaefer, but Button knows more hockey than I ever will so …

I totally agree with his comments on how GMMG has been building the roster, as he, IMO, has a clear plan and has been very disciplined in sticking to it. Whether it is how he wants to develop a young player, acquire an asset, or trade a player (despite the fans chagrin) when he thinks they are at the peak of their value. GMMG has stuck with it.

When he traded Timo, everyone thought (including me) a bad return, but now we can see what he acquired:

    Players: Zetterlund and Muhkhammadullin
Picks resulted in: Quentin Musty (2023 first), Sam Dickinson (2024 2nd used to trade with Buffalo to move up to the 11th overall pick), and the 7th round pick (203) in the 2024 draft was used to acquire Klim Kostin (along with Radim Simek).
Player Traded: Nikita Okhotyuk traded for a 5th round pick in 2024 (138 overall) which became Colton Roberts
Player Released: Andreas Johnsson released (my opinion salary dump)

So, in the end. GMMG got Fabian Zetterlund, Shakir Mukhammadullin, and Quentin Musty as well as (inpart) Sam Dickinson, Colton Roberts, and Klim "the dream" Kostin in this trade.

I would say that when that trade is looked at when all is said and done, one hell of a haul for Timo and some other players no one watches in the NHL.

He was disciplined. Used his asset (Timo) made a smart trade and the used the assets he believed did not have a future with the Sharks and acquired yet more players.

He got three impact players along with additional assets who turned into three more players.

I know Kostin is not a top six forward, but, IMO, he is a good bottom six forward.

We do not know what Colton Roberts will be, but if he ends up a bottom pair shutdown, physical defenseman, then this is just a cherry on a stacked cake.

Add the ability to trade up and get Sam Dickinson, and oh man, he won this trade!

This is a long winded example of what Button was speaking to. Look at the players he got and where they would play. They are not all top six or top pair players. They included players a team needs to fill out their roster.

This is the intelligent and disciplined approach GMMG is taking. It is a winning approach but it will take time. The future is teal!
