  1. If the refs had just blown the play dead immediately without a canucks touch we shouldnt be surprised. They enforce the rule book however/whenever they want as it is.

  2. I'm shocked the league suspended McDavid. The guy is basically the new face of the league. I remember when Wayne Gretzky used to routinely get away with infractions because of who he was. Sure, he had enforcers to protect him, but that didn't mean he wasn't willing to learn from his hero, Gordie Howe. And because of who he was, he'd get the benefit of the doubt. I regularly saw him talking the ref out of penalties against his team. But he was Wayne, I guess. The fact that the league even suspended McDavid shows they're willing to at least create the appearance of impartiality by suspending both he and Myers. It was the right call. I'm just surprised they had the balls to do it.

  3. Now that Vancouver won that game against the oilers in that fashion what’s stopping other teams from doing the same thing! Win at all costs ! Or no cost in this case!

  4. Not saying what McDavid did was smart but the refs deserve a permanent suspension this year!
The no call on Garland who was blatantly wrestling McDavid and refs do nothing forcing players to enforce the game!
The refs have been the worst part of the NHL this year closely followed by the DOPS who literally have me so confused as to what they are doing!

  5. As an arm chair GM, Coach, Ref and avid Oiler fan I don't hate the 3-game suspension, I don't like it but don't hate it. If you do the crime expect to do the time as that was a nasty cross-check by both players and not wanted in the game of hockey. Now for the officiating, that was horrible and they should also face a hearing, as well they should be fine the same amount of the total of the 2 players 250k to be sent to the player emergency fund. Now if the Refs are held to this standard they will start calling penalties even if there is 5 seconds to go in a game. I also like the idea of if there is a penalty call with 30 seconds or less in a game it should be an automatic penalty shot.

  6. What if?
If in the last minute of a game an infraction occurs, the referees, instead of raising the arm they just automatically blow the whistle??

  7. Could do if it happens in last 2min to 1min ad 10 seconds to the clock and an offensive zone puck drop, if its in the last 1minute ad 20 seconds and a off zone puck drop, super harsh yes but there's no better deterent and obviously only certain penalties not like everything.

  8. There's gotta be suspensions/penalty shots for penalties in ending minutes of the game. Kills the fun and intensity of the game. I fully agree

  9. I knew it wasn't going to be 1 game, jesse blake going on that the standard was 1 game on the podcast was so stupid. carson soucy only crosschecked mcdavid in the face because he was hit and fell, he would have been crosschecked him in the chest, but tell the story your way. MCavid should have punched him in the face if he was mad, no excuse for using a weapon to someones head. you also total fabricate garlands role in this. it doesnt matter why, there is never a reason why to crosscheck someone in the head, no matter how mad you are for getting tangled up

  10. IMO, the way to fix infractions at the end of the game is to extend the duration of the game until the power play finishes, whether the PP time runs out or they score. Especially with something like a 5 minute major.

  11. From an Edmonton fan's perspective: McDavid deserved a suspension for his crosscheck to Garland's face.

    100%.

I don't actually see any Oiler fans on X saying anything different. I think he should've gotten two games and Myers three. To me Myers was the more egregious play and he has more history with doing this sort of thing than McDavid does. If that is what NHL player safety came down with I don't think anyone could argue it.

As for the Garland non-call every fan who is calling McDavid a whiner or a baby would be screaming at the top of their lungs if it was their teams' star getting mugged in the dying seconds of a tied game. So enough with the hypocrisy. The refs blew the call and they lost control of the game. This is evident after both Myers and McDavid got match penalties and everyone else on the ice got two minutes. The refs blew it and they know it.

The bigger question here is much more fundamental; what does the league believe the role is for their referees in hockey games? Are the refs supposed to be there to enforce the rules? They don't most of the time. It seems to me that the refs are actually there to "manage" the game. I hear them talk about "game management". This means the league and the refs have an idea how the game is supposed to go and calls are made to ensure it goes that way.

I don't mean which team wins, although that outcome can be directly impacted by the referees game management. I mean controlling what happens in the game. Calling even up penalties. Non-calls on players who've upset them. Knowing one team's power play is way better than others and limiting the number of infractions called because the score would become too lopsided. Changing what is a penalty from one game to the next, sometimes from period to period.

Is that supposed to their role? Shouldn't the players determine what happens in the game?

It's incredibly frustrating to watch and it damages the value of the NHL product. I can't imagine how frustrating it is for the players and coaches.

  12. There is 10 secinds left and the Oilers had the puck…you want a whistle??

  13. I was reading a comment in which they stated that players get injured more when Wes refs. I don’t currently have the capacity to generate those stats, but I’m curious if that is available

  14. Here’s Steve, crying… again: “What if what Garland did decides the Stanley Cup?!?!”

    Non-sissy answer: SO FRIGGIN” WHAT?!?!

There are two kinds of Canadians: those who flip vehicles over, and those who constantly fight the urge to flip vehicles over. Win, lose, or draw… no vehicle is safe in Canada.

The penalty shot idea is about as short sighted as turning a car upside down, minus the criminal damage to property. Same goes for adding time. Steve claims… “What if everyone on the ice just started slashing the other players at the end of the game?” Well, if that is a legitimate concern, which it absolutely is not, because it’s irrational, that could be easily mitigated by an immediate MINIMUM, ONE YEAR suspension for all such offenders. As far as the concern about time expiring during the delayed penalty, that could be addressed by blowing all penalties dead within “x” number of minutes from the end of a game. Sure, people will then complain: “what if it takes away a scoring chance for the other team?” That is so rare, it’s utterly inconsequential. Granted, teams do score with the extra attacker, but the vast majority of those instances are after they have played keep away with the puck and even changed several guys while maintaining possession. If time was a concern they wouldn’t want to do that, much less try. Granted, it is “extra” power play time that would be lost, but if that’s what it takes, then so be it. Call it the “Garland Rule”, and hate him for it. Too bad, so sad.

Finally, Steve keeps getting stuck on such a play ending a series he seems to have forgotten that a team has to lose FOUR games to lose a series. How about… the BEST PLAYER ON THE PLANET and his buddy Leon do something about it sooner? The team who wins 4 games in a 7 game series is THE BETTER TEAM. Cry me a river. Try again next year. Of all people, a Leafs fan should be the LAST person who needs this explained to them. Yet, here we are!

  15. I dislike how McDavid completely skates for initiating the contact with Garland and basically mounting him before Garland and him both get back to their feet and Garland then takes McDavid down. Yes its on the refs for not doing their job to the final whistle but their job was make it 4 on 4 and that doesn't make anyone happy.

  16. Awesome video Steve. Well done. That penalty shot in the last minute idea is spicy, I like it!

  17. Adding time to the game due to penalties is kind of stupid imo. The Oilers had 60 minutes to tie the game up and failed to do so. Giving them the extra time after the game ends because Garland impeded McDavid for 20 out of the 3600 seconds the game ran for is pretty ridiculous.

  18. NHL continues to get it wrong. I would love to hear McDavid stand up and call out the NHL on their utter BS.

  19. McDavid was having a "quiet" season! Now he's about to go Canadian Division BeastMode on the League!! This the day MacKinnon lost the Art Ross! Book it!!

  20. None of this would’ve happened if Bouchard got called for holding Peterson on the end boards 20 seconds prior. And he held for at minimum 10-15 seconds

  21. If I go out with my wooden garden rake and cross check my neighbor in the face do I get 3 days off work?

  22. Wait, crosschecking is illegal? With how often I see it happen in the NHL, they might as well stop the farce and make it a legit play. Hey coach, what drill will we do today? Oh, I think our crosschecking game could be better, let's run a few sets of those!

  23. McBaby needs to learn to control his temper more. Both he and Myers should have been given a maximum of five games. Cross-checking someone, no matter the circumstances, is just plain dirty. Only dirty players do it.

  24. Connor Garland, my new hero. "I thought this was the best way to win the game." And so it was.

  25. This was just McDavid getting outplayed by Garland.

Garland know the referee, and Garland know how much time is left. So he knows that he can do as he did without getting called. He played that moment to perfection.
Some might say it is a bit against the rules. But won the game, and thus achieved the goal. As Canadian hockey players often think, the ends do indeed justify the means. And the means in this case was playing the rules and holding McDavid to secure a win.

  26. Any player who does this should be suspended no matter who they are. Why is everyone pandering to McD? He can always throw a locker room tantrum

  27. I’m in a rare agreement with Steve. Myers should have received more. Suspending them both the same was just easier for the DOPS.
