Sorry.
Gonna respectfully disagree. McDavid did it in frustration after 20 seconds of being held out of the game due to TERRIBLE refs. Myers? Oh lets see what he did. He waited for Bouchards guard to be down, waited for him to take out his mouthpiece, then SUCKED PUNCHED him with a crosscheck to the chin. Naw, Myers deserved a worse suspension. You, or anyone who thinks those two people deserve the same suspension, ain't capable of critical thinking.
Both McDavid and Myers were held accountable. How about we have some transparent way that the refs are held accountable when they suck at their jobs?
1:04 "McDavid cross-checked a dude in the face. You can't do that."
Watch the hit again, frame-by-frame like the league should have done if you can use "," and "." on a keyboard, or at least at the 0.25X Youtube allows on mobile. Garland's left fist, and possibly stick, have risen and made contact with McDavid's jaw on a cross-check of his own before McDavid's stick connects with Garland.
"McDavid cross-checked a dude in the face. You can't do that."
I agree, since hits to the head are such a serious matter. Soooo, when can I expect to see Garland's suspension be announced?
This sort of thing is why you have enforcers in the game. No one would take liberties with a star like McJesus if they knew the big lad would take vengeance on the next shift. If you phase that type of player out, you create a world where Conor etc will routinely get dealt with. Up to those players to toughen up themselves now. In my opinion, anyway. What would I know i can't even skate
Connie McNuggets is showing his true colors, a no class skoom bag.
In what world does the league not make a call on garland holding him for almost 10 seconds? I get a 1 game suspension but not 3 games. That is the issue.
3 was a little too much. 1-2 for sure.
This is why oilers fans are hated for their stupidity. The play goes on since Edmonton had the puck plus the punch to the head while on top. Then goes after a guy that’s 5’8 maybe. McDavid also did this for his past infractions https://youtu.be/ovztaW9l5qM?si=Xo8jQ6niwvhGjHcX
I agree with almost all of your takes, not this one though. McDavid deserved a suspension, yes, however your take on him doing it because he was frustrated someone took away his chance to score? Hell no, it was basically a wrestling match where Garland was holding him down and all but put him in a headlock at one point. The blame for this all taking place lays solely at the feet of the refs. It never should have escalated to 2 guys getting cross checked. I also firmly believe that cross check would have hit Garland's shoulder had he not ducked a little bit.
I would be fine with a league where McDavid’s cross check was a 3 game suspension, my only issue is that it’s not the same league where Pietrangelo’s double handed overhead chop to Draisaitl’s wrist was only 1 game.
As an Oilers fan, I believe it was deserved. It's dangerous and can't be tolerated. But, all I really want is for those shenanigans that led to the cross-check to be fucking dealt with once and for all. Seriously, holding someone down needs to be penalized. It's poor sportsmanship, and you're risking injury if either of you slip the wrong way with sharp ass skates.
I'm an oilers fan and agree. He got frustrated but as he himself stated 'he should not react like that's.'.
I consider myself a mcdavid super fan and a die hard oilers fan. I totally agreed with the suspension. It is what it is. Hopefully players will be a little scared to pull that crap again
The issue with it being three games is that when Mcdavid was crosschecked in the face during the playoffs, Soucy only received 1 game
Why aren't the Refs held accountable for not doing their JOBS? They pay the same fine percentage from their wages and same suspension. It's only fair and will teach them to do their JOBS next time. 🤷🏼♂️ Garland should join the UFC. He's clearly better at grappling than playing hockey.
Oilers fans are gonna gargle McDavid bean bag until he great grandchildren die.
He already gets the highest level of treatment from refs EVERY SINGLE GAME. Get off your high horse Oilers fans. "It's cup or bust" gonna be a bust till mcjesus leaves
My view on this stands with common sense and they both deserved suspensions but my issue is all the people jumping on the "Mc-cry baby" wagon just because the best player in the league got handed a suspension. The focus is all on McDavid and none of it is on Tyler Myers who blatantly without reason cross checked Bouchard in the mouth. The statistic of who's drawn more penalties should say enough that players are willing to take a penalty in order to stop him, clearly garland had that in mind so it was all a matter of time before something like this were to happen. Again, i agree with the suspension, its just how quick people are to jump on the hate train when a star makes a mistake, its almost like they are looking for a reason to hate him.
3 games is not "patently" too long, its just longer than recent suspensions for similar incidents. Auston Matthews was suspended 2 games for cross checking Dahlin right in the face a few years ago. Soucy suspended 1 game in last years playoffs. Mangiapane 1 game for cross checking McCanns face right into the ice. Timo Meir 1 game for tagging Heureux in the chin. AJ Greer 1 game from crossing checking Hoffman in the chin. Lizotte 1 game for hitting Morrisey in the chin during a line change. I don't know what the right number of games is, but it seems to go up and down at the whim of DoPS. By all means, make it 3 games going fwd, but that should be the standard for all these types of hits from here on out.
I don't want special treatment for any player, and I am a huge Oilers fan. The real initiating cause of both the McDavid and Myers retaliation was the egregious lack of a call on Vancouver's Garland for obstruction. With time running out in the game, Garland's intent and strategy was blatantly obvious to everyone in the building…. except, apparently, the officials. They should also be suspended.
Garland didn't crosscheck mcdavid to the face. Mcdavid crosschecked him in the face. Simple as
McDavid didn't crosscheck Garland "in the face". He hit him in the side of the helmet. Last year the Canuck's Soucy crosschecked McDavid right in the face and got a 1 game suspension. Oilers fans are pissed off because: the NHL doesn't protect their star players from the constant mauling; repeatedly fails to call obvious penalties; inconsistently applies suspensions; engages in "game management" by officials. Instead of promoting their highly-skilled stars, they're turning hockey into Stampede Wrestling.
Here’s what should happen, a game can’t end until a penalty ends, that way you can’t mug the best players on the ice as the clock winds down to secure the win. NHL needs to have the refs calling the holding and clutching to take a player out of the play. Which is why I don’t watch it much anymore.
Edmonton fans have been crybabies forever. They have no stoicism. They feel entitled. But, that is what you expect from progressive liberalism….
I understand having an objection to the fans and team being frustrated over a fair suspension.
That being said on mcDavid’s behalf. When do you stand up for yourself? When you do, how do you do it?
Genuinely asking.
When the refs do nothing, players fight.
Should have called a holding penalty then we wouldn’t be here.
Jesus so moronic fanbase
The "refs need to do better, but you still cant retaliate" comments have been going on since Bobby Orr's rookie season. The day that happens is the day I'll care about star players retaliating. Canucks fans who had to watch Bure's career get cut short should understand exactly why Oilers fans, just like Penguins fans of the last decade are going and went insane.
At the end of the day as much as people say they care about calling the rule book, they really dont. They care about the refs calling the rule book when their team gets penalized, but when your team doesnt have game breaking talent the rulebook is just a detriment to you.
Fans are crazy on both sides. A lot of people were complaining that mcdavid didn't get more games lol. In my opinion the Myers crosscheck was way worse, it was straight in the face and totally unprovoked. Mcdavid hit the guy in the side of the helmet. Suspend them both but In my opinion it should have been 2 for Davo and 3-4 for Myers
Considering the loudest and most outraged take I have heard about this is from a podcast with three Leafs fans I don’t really get your take. The officiating in NHL is notoriously inconsistent and now, it appears so is the punishment of match penalties. Also let’s just throw out the clean slate principle that the NHL has used in the past. McDavid being punished not just for the cross check but also ‘History’ comes into play. What both players was wrong and deserved punishment but the inconsistency and lack of transparency exhibited here makes the whole viewing experience of the sport less enjoyable.
Go watch Mathews cross check a year ago…2 games. I think that's the outrage, no consistency.
Nailed it, Eck. I wonder if Myers didn't also cross-check within a few seconds if the league would've still followed through with a suspension on McJesus
Stauffer wasn't saying he shouldn't have gotten a suspension. He was saying if the penalty had been called on Garland in the first place neither cross check would have happened at all. The corss checks and suspensions are a direct result of the refs deciding not to call the hold/mauling of McDavid.
As for the actual suspension 3 games is ridiculous, but thats also par for the course for the NHL. 1 game in my mind. But that isn't the main issue to me. The main issue again is holding, hacking, tripping that is allowed to happen and this is the boiling point of that.
This is such a perpetually-online take. Nobody is saying McDavid should sit out the 4 nations. Just because one angry dude on twitter said it doesn't mean an entire fanbase feels the same. Touch some grass err snow I guess
Sorry Eck… Should been only 2 game suspension for Davo and 3 to 5 for Myers! Davo crosschecked Garland in the helmet from Davo being mauled by him… Myers crosscheck bouchard face for no apparent reason
McDavid hit garland in the head/helmet. Myers hit Bouchard in the face with a crosscheck.
What fans are mad about is the lack of calls. If the play was whistled down early the crosschecks probably dont happen.
Top it all off, Bouchard gets a penalty for gstting crosschecked in the end? The officiating has been plain awful league wide amd fans are tired of it.
As a Flames fan, two things can be true at once:
McDavid deserved the suspension.
The refs let the game get out of hand.
If you as refs are not calling penalties, then the players are going to self-officiate.
Oilers fans are the whiniest cry babies in the league. You guys are the new Toronto, acting like you’re being persecuted. Get over it.
Oiler's fans, like Albertans in general, think they are better than the rest of us.
L video
Everyone involved in this is focusing on the wrong thing, there is no issue with the suspension the issue was connor garland faced 0 reprecussions for what he did to even cause the outburst in the first place that is the massive issue, you shouldnt just get to hold a guy down then do an interview after the game bragging about it and not face any sort of punishment its absolutely insane the NHL and its Refs need a serious overhaul
He should not sit out the four nations
There are more people bitching about Edmonton fans than there are bitching Edmonton fans.
There's a precedent of 1 game or previously 2 games which is the only reason I've seen people complain over the number '3' not that he was suspended.
Mcdavid literally being a victim of a Double cross check to the head last year and the checker got ONE day is a example of how this league DOESN'T treat things fairly.
Where I see all the ACTUAL outlash is how a hockey player can be held for 15 seconds, get no call and then act like the world is on fire when he retaliates.
Was what he did right?
Of fucking course not.
Was it understandable?
You'd be fucking stupid to say no.
He should have been suspended during the playoffs for his face check on Hughes. then he pulls the do you know who I am garbage? I hate him.
