Genuine question, did he do this to blow it up on purpose? To force the hand so to speak. Now, they will have more GMs circling smelling blood, and maybe it speeds up the turn over? I don't think it's a good move cause it already feels like he's working from a place of weakness, and now, even weaker…
Peterson was a mistake and should be traded now. Rutherford should be fired.
Any chance this unites them? Trying to think of something positive…..
If this continues to head in the direction it is going: the result (not how it happened) eerily reminds me of what happened to Calgary's core a few years ago.
It could be worse. You could be a Toronto fan. 1966-67 was the last time they won. In a six team league. Only 4 teams made the playoffs.
WOW! What a review and I for one, was unaware of this interview by Jim and as a penguins fan, I have kinda relaxed my overall league followings as my team kinda stinks. Lol But anyway, this brings me back to my opinion of Rutherford during his time in Pittsburgh and his departure from Carolina. Simply stated, he does some really good things and then he doesn't. This definitely falls into the doesn't category and might just be his worst work yet. I just don't understand the leverage that he may have thought this interview might bring or how this helps anything. Period. I love my guy Tocchett and I wish he never left Pittsburgh and his time with the coyotes was a very tough situation and now this. But I digress, this was a bad move by Rutherford imo and I really hope something good comes out of it but that doesn't seem likely. Sending well wishes to all of the Vancouver fan base and …geez. This is sad
gary mason left out some very important comments that were missing in the article
This is what I mean by the media's fault. They have cocmpletely amplified and made this a big thing. It should have remained quiet and private, and they could have worked it out.
Why do the Canucks have these issues constantly. What is the common factor ? They have had great players, great coaches. WTF over.
As an oilers fan , I can honestly say I just find myself rooting on the Canucks because of you. Even given the recent events
Excellent video.
Rutherford has gone senile. Why would he do an interview and air all the team's dirty laundry? And further devalue his players in the process? What's his play here? The only thing I can think of is that he wants to prepare the market for a lot of disappointment. They need to acquire a couple solid defenders, move one of the problems out of here and sign Lankinen. I would also trade Boeser rather than lose him for nothing.
What's the point of Rutherford, a man with a proven track record of building and managing championship teams, putting this out in the open? I think there are 2 distinct possibilities:
1) This has been going on so long and the team from top to bottom have tried everything to fix it, coupled with the fact they've also seen they will not get back what they need by trading either player means they have nothing to lose and are hoping this last ditch effort to embarrass these 2 "professionals" into finally resolving their differences will do just that. If it doesn't work, who cares? You've tried everything including every possible trade route. There was no other option and clearly keeping quiet about it for years has not worked.
OR
2) Rutherford's gone senile and lost his mind.
Either one is equally possible.
Doom metal
If they had played Lankinen for every game (impossible I know) they'd easily be in a playoff spot right now. Trade Demko to an eastern team for anything.
As someone who was NOT a kid in 82, that team never had a chance against the Islanders.
What the 82 team had, that is SORELY missing right now, was a solid sense of TEAM!
They weren't super talented, but they definitely had a ton of chemistry.
You just don't see it now.
I’ve always felt bad for Vancouver fans. You guys deserve better.
I remember someone at ESPN (back when they still had real hockey people there) saying that (I wanna say it was Barry Melrose?) if you have a personality conflict on a team, the best remedy was to get rid of BOTH of them. Anybody that contributes to a culture split has no value on a team, and you're better off in essence with less skilled, but more cohesive personnel…I agree…
This seems to be how Rutherford handles these situations it's no different than how he handled the malkin/Kessel rift but the penguins also had crosby the Canucks don't have a crosby to hold things together
The phrase colossal clusterf*ck is overused a lot these days. But my word is it appropriate here.
At the end of the day, if the end goal is to win a cup, this interview, this rift and this core are all irrelevant because it's nearly impossible for a team to win in a media cesspool like the Vancouver market. The media here are absolute cancer and they bleed into the vast majority of the fanbase. The only team in pro sports who has worse media than Vancouver is Toronto and how long has it been since they've even made the cup final? 60yrs? You can say "they're pros and theyre getting paid to perform" but they are still human and it's impossible to ignore THIS level of negativity when it's been force fed to you by the braindead media on a daily basis. Fact
I've started following other teams because of how tiresome the constant Canucks drama is. If Hughes leaves I'll just root for whatever team he goes to. Honestly if this is going to be how the Canucks are forever, just sell the team. Put us out of our misery.
I hate to say it but the Canucks don’t have to do anything. They can just play through it and grow as a team.
Not saying this to kick a dead horse, just being honest – right now, Canucks are the Sabers of the West. And that statement SHOULD hurt. Fix this? Start at the top, take ownership (from owners on down) – you may need to 'divorce' from everyone, and take years to rebuild in the right way, with the right people. Remember, Behind-The-Scenes is often More Important than On-The-Ice. Good luck, and I mean that.
My favourite memories of last year are going to 2 away playoff games (vs Nashville game 3 & 6) at Rogers arena and just grateful I got to experience that in the 1 great year before the next decade of pain.
Lol man to be a representative of the Canucks. You get dragged through the mud for being tight lipped….you get dragged through the mud if you speak out. There's no winning lol.
Explains why Pettersson was reluctant to sign his extension.
Penguins fan here. Started watching in 94 so I missed the first 2 cups but I’ve seen 3. They could lose for the rest of my life and I’ve seen more cups than most fans.
We are so screwed.
"We are all Canucks".
Brian Burke can't clean anything up. He was a disaster n Toronto and Calgary and a complete clownshow in Pittsburgh
not sure what JR was thinking saying this. only further makes things worse and lowers your return for either player. great work
So… Rutherford and Alvin knew it didn’t work and then signed both miller and petey anyway, and now say they have to accept bad returns for them?? And why throw hughes’ name in this mess… turn the one guy who’s doing everything possible against you?
I cannot believe two petty players can send an entire team into a rebuild… wtf
Am i the only one that appreciate Rutherfords honesty. 😃
Institution…. You’re in a Burger King jersey going crazy over the Canucks…. 😀
why did Rutherford even talk to the reporter…
Don't forget Gerald Diduck!!
I was a Canucks fan from pre '82 until the SCF series against Boston in 2011. I feel like being a Canucks fan is sort of like hitting yourself with a hammer…it feels good to stop. We moved to Edmonton a year later, during the low point of the "Decade of Darkness" here. It was still easier to cheer for the Oilers through those times…and they got better and better. From a drama standpoint there is a night and day difference. nothing that happens with the Canucks surprises me.
Can everyone stop speaking about the Miller and Peter b.s. soap opera. Ffs
The Canucks we know
Maybe this will shame everybody into playing well enough to be traded. "Put a few good games together, boys, you might get the Golden Ticket out of this place…"
