I'll just say the Avs are happy right now. Our offense looks new/recharged and Necas and MacK are super fun to watch together
Rantannen is great, but let’s not pretend that playing with the 2nd best player in the world and arguably the best defenseman didn’t boost his stats BIG time…
Rants needs to fire his agent. I think the moose would still prefer to be in the mountains
This trade is really just showing the superstardom of MacKinnon. Aho is a great player but he ain’t Nathan MacKinnon. Gonna be a lot harder for Rantanen to rack up as many multi point games.
Mikko, or his agent, played themselves. They thought they could just slow roll the contract situation, and they could hold the Avs hostage with the threat of leaving in FA…and it didn't happen. Colorado made the difficult decision to trade Mikko. How is Carolina going to feel when they gave up what they did for a 3 month rental? To my knowledge, the Avs offer was to make Mikko the highest paid winger in the league. That SHOULD have been enough, because he keeps saying it wasn't about the money. If it wasn't about the money, and you loved being in Colorado so much, why wouldn't you sign the contract? It was 100% about the money. Mikko thought, or his agent convinced him, he was worth $13.5-$14.5M. He's good, but he is not worth that. To a bottom dwelling team he may be, but if he wants to win Cups, it isn't going to happen.
People don't seem to realize the return the Avs got in this deal. Necas was the scoring leader on Carolina. He is also cost controlled for another year for about $3M less than Mikko. They also got Drury who seems to be a decent 3rd-4th liner with familial ties to the organization. Also don't forget the draft pick. The Avs need as many of those as they can get as they turn them in to decent players…like Devon Toews.
I’d laugh if somehow he signed back in Colorado
You just stated how i feel about the leafs. I will not discuss them until they have actual playoff success.
Canes are weak down the middle… only Aho is solid… past Stanley Cup winners have tremendous two way center depth and shutdown defense… only Slavin qualifies as top tier… Canes getting bounced again in the playoffs until they understand playoff hockey is much different than regular season… Analytics gets you into the playoffs but doesn't work in the playoffs.
Carolina. It’s an interesting situation. As NHL fan at large watching a fair number of games featuring Avs…I always regarded Rantanen as the great support forward in the elite tier. Yes he benefited from MacKinnon but there were many times when Rantanen drove offensive outcomes. MacKinnon was followed chased and driven off the puck with his speedy talented playmaking. Rantanen tho would sort of bat clean up. He often had great moments because MacKinnon was being marginalized out. He was very inclined to effect points based on his own strong play.
There are plenty of offensive variables on this Canes offense. I would think he slots in well with trial and error. Seth Jarvis with him might be a good line pairing.
Playoffs. Whoever goes further in playoffs will show a more likely winner. Regular season doesn't matter now. And Mikko has performed in playoffs, not Martin Necas. So I think I'll wait and see after playoffs. Drew can speculate on a 6 regular season game window like a moron. And if Necas does perform in playoffs then how much of that is the Mackinnon effect?
I've got to admit I was totally wrong with my initial reaction to the trade I was totally unaware how good necas is. I'm still going to miss having mikko on the avs but I've absolutely jumped on the hype for necas since joining the avs the team has had a new life to them
A common talking point in the Denver sports media for the last couple of years was how Rantanen wasn't a top performer when he played with other line mates. He couldn't produce at the same level without MacKinnon there with him. Not saying he's bad, but rather that he wasn't the creator of opportunities. After the initial shock, this is where my mind has gone, and is what I will be watching through the remainder of this season for sure.
Necas is better than people think. You can say he lacks consistency, right, but he is still relatively young and playing with Nathan in first line with Avs system makes a huge difference. With Hurricanes he used to play in 2nd line with some random dudes and mediocre ice time, yet he made it top 10 in league in points this season.
No one been talking about how bad Necas is defensively, look up goals against while he is on the ice compared to Rantanen, then see that Necas had 3 of the top 10 defensive pairings in the NHL and Mikko had the worst goal tending in the league and a less defensive system
isnt this typical american way of looking at sports.. is he a failure? player A got 4 points in 2 games and player B only got 3…
I hope you guys commit a good 20-30min to the EDM COL game from Fri. Amazing game!
Also, how absolutely ass backwards is the NHL that: today's Gretzky, today's Orr, the 2nd best player in the world, the 3rd-5th best player in the world are all in a game together, and it's the only Canadian team playing that day BUT you can only watch if you live in EDM's region?! Those are the games you want everyone in North America, and beyond, to tune in for so you can sell them the rest of the product! It's assenine.
Easy there with the "shitty blackhawks" mister Fn 1st round exit 😂
Way too little talk about Martin Necas….. jeez
Miko Rantanen was traded for being too slow and not worth the contract extension from the AVS
Marty Necas has tremendous speed.
Us Avs fans, we all knew what happened when Bednar moved Mikko away from Mack to spread out the offense. Mack still produced but Mikko disappeared immediately. The Avs organization always knew that and rated Mikko appropriately. The national media completely missed this fact.
Necas fit in to both because of his speed and Rantanen will have to change his game to fit in with Carolina.
Guentzel took some time to get going on the canes last year too. Rantanen got there right when the team had a locker room flu and just got dinged up.
he gets to play with Aho in the 4 nations.
I still think it’s a win win for both teams aves got what they needed canes got what they needed. Necas was a better fit for Denver’s offense hence immediate success but think when rants gets comfortable there will help that team also
Have you watched the games or are you just looking at the stats? Rantanen's been great and very unlucky not to have 3 or 4 more goals. His underlying stats have also been great. Just wait and you will see his stats go up as well.
The Avs weren't going to pay Mikko 14m. Even if what was true from rumors that they offered him 11.75 per, he was not willing to settle for that. The ONLY way at this point that Carolina wins this trade is if they win the cup. I don't foresee that happening cause the Avs are going to do that. It was far better for the Avs to get something from Mikko than to to lose him for nothing in the FA market. I think it would be hilarious if Mikko comes back and resigns in the off season with the Avs and they become an even larger power house than they already are but I am not sure that is feasible since Makar is going to be coming up on contract renewal soon and the Avs are not letting him go….
Who says Avs offered Mikko 8 years? They weren't close in negotiations, pretty easy to figure out that both sides were NOT talking about 8 year contract..
The avs won for sure. Not sure why every avs fan thought moose was all of a sudden one of the top 3 players in the nhl.
You go to the Canes to NOT score points……. what are we doing
Also. The canes have been destroyed by the flu for the past week. It’s too early to tell. Playoffs are the big telling factor
