I hope not. Id rather us have him for a rental with the chemistry him and Aho are starting to show than give him up now at a loss compared to what we gave up.

  2. I think the best pitch the Canes front office can give Rantanen isn't about this year, but the future. I don't think the Canes are good enough to win the Cup this year, and I think the front office knows that full well. Keep in mind this was always supposed to be a re-tool year because we lost a third of our players from last year. It's honestly a small miracle that the Canes have done as well as they have so far, and I think you try to sell Rantanen on that future. The fact that he has already won a Stanley Cup might be beneficial for us as well…He might not be in that "win now or bust" mode that someone who hadn't won a cup would be feeling going into free agency. So perhaps he decides to deal with a potential down year if it means coming back stronger in the future.

Either way, I totally agree that the best course of action is to keep him on past the deadline, pause all contract talks until mid June, and just let him absorb/get acclimated to everything that has happened over the past month. Is it a risk? Yes, for sure – and if he walks in July that would suck but it's also not the end of the world. I swear I think he just needs some space to breathe and play hockey – I think there is a far greater chance that we sign him if we go that route, than if we keep pressuring him to make a hasty decision. The mistake we made with Guentzel is that he was willing to re-sign but we didn't match his offer until a day before free agency…But the Canes should also be apprehensive about swinging the pendulum too far the other way with Rantanen, where we are too aggressively trying to shove a new contract down his throat before he even knows where the closest grocery store to his apartment is. Dude just needs some space to breathe and experience how awesome Raleigh is during the playoffs…I think it will sell itself if we let it happen organically.

  3. Idk how people can so confidently say we have a better chance of winning the cup with mikko on our team when we have a losing record since acquiring him.

  4. If he leaves then so be it. We have a great core to build around anyway with aho, Svech,, jarvis, and slavin. We also have Boom Nitkiskin ready to possibly come over next season so if Brandon wants to leave make him lose the 8th year of a big contract.

  5. The concern now isn't whether or not he signs, their concern is if he is even worth the money they're set to pay him. That's why the trade conversation is even happening. He might not be what the team even needs at this point.
