Let him go hes been a brat since day 1
The tricky thing is, either the Leafs think they have a prospect who is equal to Mitch, or they will spend money in free agency and trades forever looking for a Mitch Marner.
Like him or not he contributes to at least getting you into the playoffs.
So with a rising cap and John coming off the books he should easily be a 12-13mil a year player. Keeps him below Matthews money and most likely on par with where league contracts are going for elite wingers.
Sucks but it’s not my money lol
Smart….good for you Mitch.
why is a black man talking about hockey? LMAO
Good. Tired of always having this guy as the easy blame for Leafs not winning a transport in the playoffs.
Bruins got plenty of cap space now , maybe he’d fit in over here ?! 👺👹
You know what if Mitch marner wants to stay a leaf but does not want to talk during the season to focus during the season and even the playoffs to focus on that on no contract stuff fine but don’t be John Tavares from the island if you really want to be a leaf you will start to talk AS SOON AS THE PLAYOFFS END and if you don’t that shows you don’t want to be a leaf and if you leave us like John did we will boo you every time you go on the ice against us booed by your own city is that what you want Mitch if not you will talk after playoffs
1. Stop yelling, it's infuriating
2. Two things can be true at once: he wants to stay but doesn't want to negotiate during season.
3. Weren't you saying like a week ago that people need chill up on Mitch??
Marner wants to be paid maximum after tax dollars. He has no loyalty to the Leafs. He will be gone days after free agency, to a low tax state.
The Leafs insistence on rolling it back over and over again, was beyond stupidity and it will result in watching Mitch walk away for nothing.
Welcome to Anaheim Mitch! See you this summer.
He going to be a penguin. In off season.
it would suck to lose Mitch for nothing … but, if he does walk, the Leafs will be free of a lot of cap space which they could use to sign/get a gamer.
Mitch got talent and skill no doubt, but at the end of the day it's about winning games and championship.
Jessie,
I am highly impressed with your analysis of the entire situation surrounding Mitch's contract from 2019 to the present. You are the only YouTuber and reporter who has clearly articulated the management's missteps and Mitch's recent approach. I concur that Brendan Shanahan is ultimately accountable for the current predicament, having opted not to implement changes after the losses to the Habs in both 2019 and 2023, which resulted in early exits. If Mitch does not re-sign or is permitted to leave without any return after this season's early exit, Brendan Shanahan should be dismissed. In fact, I believe they should have refined the core five after that game against the Zamboni driver.
Ugh Mitchy. He’s gonna eff us over. Players say they know this is a business but refuse to negotiate during the season. 🤦♂️
Marner is the best Maple Leaf hands down
Marner mastered this scenario. If he wants to stay he will and he will get paid. If he doesn’t he could get paid more. Win win for him. As Jesse outlines the leafs missed their chance and will look very foolish if he leaves this summer (especially if he does so without a ring)
Am I missing something? Why would mitch sign here and let us trade him? Why wouldnt he just sign with that other team? I think we are either keeping marner or losing him for nothing. That’s where it stands right now
The saving grace is that maybe a guy like Bennett wants to sign here and does and then you also have money to maybe pursue another decent player as there are a handful available this summer
Looks likely he'll leave. Mitch will be the most hated player in leafs history if that happens. Ive heard stories about him off the ice and its never flattering. Comes across as immature and self serving
Marner's future in Toronto will be about how far the Leaf's advice and his contribution. If they dont advance Leaf Nation will blame MM and then he'll go somewhere else and win a cup. if the leafs let Marner walk and they keep Tavares and Reilly we are effed.
Mitch is not going to sign for 5 mil lol. Hes gonna test free agency and see if leafs can match if not he will walk
Mitch is not going to be a free agent unless Toronto sucks in playoffs again
So typical of Toronto fans and media to take a dump on one of their best. "The mix" has been your blessing, regular season's performance has been proof of that, it was your incompetent GM Kyle that could never bring in the proper support for these guys for the playoffs, and now that you are possibly one or two more good trades (like this past trade deadline) away from the cup, you want to throw away one of your elite. Typical. Let Marner walk and you can start salivating for a cup for another 60 years.
I think it's possible that part of him would prefer for him to stay in Toronto, but that at the same time he wants to be signed in an environment that maximizes his value: as a free agent with an increased salary cap.
I like him a lot as a player, but with another early exit, which to be honest with you, looks almost certain, it is probably time to move on. Toronto will still have some big contracts in Matthews and Nylander, neither of whom has looked remarkable of late. (notwithstanding that Matthews does do a lot of little things that help the team even when he is not scoring). They will need to sign Knies in a year, and he will be deserving of a big raise. But, the Leafs will be at a crossroads in terms of being good enough to be a playoff team, but not seeming like a contender for even the Conference Final.
Should the Leafs move on from Marner (and who knows about Tavares) they will need to replace the various tools number 16 has, but also the right mix to perform in the playoffs. The Leafs have not gotten the secondary scoring that other teams can manufacture. There is no Nick Paul for instance.
I'm sure out there somewhere is a hockey player who will score only 50-70 points in the regular season, but whose personality will make all the difference in a team's playoff success. There are so many players I would rather have than Marner's 100 points. Hockey IQ vs Winning IQ.
He’s in his prime. He wants to stay where it gives him the best chance to win the cup at the same time this will probably be the best payday of his life.
He’s going to Montreal or to Boston 😂
If you can’t beat them… join them 😂
Well it does make sense he wants to remain a leaf, at the highest amount possible
Brilliant analysis Jesse. And only an amateur delusional management team would give a player 100% NMC in the final year of a contract. Even 5 teams allows the team some rightful leverage to make it fair. This is ultimately on Brendan Shanahan. One of his few MAJOR mistakes.

maybe Marner wants to put all effort with team into playoff run, then see where things are at?
Toronto see where things are at after playoffs as well?
if Toronto makes run in playoffs, could make sense to sign Marner?
Great overview Jesse, you are the best.
Marner wants more money than Matthews. What sort of mayhem would this make if he states this in season? Marner is actually doing the Leafs a favour.
Never can understand why people believe a great hockey player makes a great manager.
Just one small correction – when you are playing against Price with one knee functioning you are not the overwhelming favorite to win a playoff series.
Does he not remember what happened to John and that was not even his hometown. Imagine the amount of pure hate he will get if he leaves now. You can’t come home again not even in the off season (yes also pet leafs fault but fans don’t care)
Makes since to me. The fan base and management used him as a scapegoat for the past few years. Furthermore, he can make more money playing for other teams. Simply because of the tax structure
