It's such a shame Zetterberg and Datsyuk didn't get another Cup. They really should have, just a few near misses in the playoffs that could maybe be blamed on their supporting cast not getting the job done. I remember Holmstrom, Hossa, and Hudler all failing to contribute in the 2009 run, and imagining where they would be if just one of them was scoring more. And Jimmy Howard was definitely a good enough goaltender to win a Cup, but the team just naturally declined over the years and he couldn't carry them.

I do hope next year with a full year with Todd Mclellan. We can really make playoffs. He's proven himself to be a good coach. Just wish Yzerman fired Lalonde earlier when the "easier" matchups were, so we didnt have to fight this gauntlet praying for the team to win against cup contenders.

I really do believe in Stevie. I get irritated watching but the truth is we gotta wait for the guys he drafted. They’re getting there. It’s not as short as any fan would hope but that’s the reality of it.

Great Stat for Kronwall is he scored the game winning goal in Osgoods 400th career win and it was against Colorado.
The "just make the playoffs" mentality was entirely Mike Illitch's doing. He wanted to die happy. Considering what he did for Rosa Parks, no problem there.

Reasons I believe in Stevie Y. as GM: 1) No one bats 1000 and (2) I can't see that the Shanaplan has been much better.
Holland taking one shot too many at retooling the Wings made a little bit more sense at the time because there seemed to be enough promising young players in the pipeline that passing the torch from Yzerman to Lidstrom to Zetterberg to Larkin just might work. Had they drafted better between 2000-2015, maybe it would've. But when you go 15 years in between drafting Kronwall and Hronek with next to nothing in between for defensemen, the bigger surprise to me is that it took that long for the Wings collapse to happen.

Lidstrom was the key to all of Detroit's success.
Before(1991) and after (2012) his career the team has been mostly below average.
At the time after Yzerman, Fedorov and Shanahan stopped playing for the team I thought they would go downhill but they continued to finish 1st or 2nd in the league for many more seasons until Lidstrom retired.
