I think Drury got ahead of himself with the Kakko trade. Wrong partner, wrong return. I maintain that there were/are multiple Central division teams that could've used Kakko and may have been silly enough to get into a bidding war for him.

Hey Jon hope you read this I have some thoughts on the captaincy, but first things first: as you said Jon, there isn’t an obvious answer to who wears the C next season.
I agree with you that Trocheck and Miller aren’t the right guys— Trocheck because he hasn’t really shown as much leadership since Miller came around, idk tho i’m not in the locker room.
Hear me out, but if we are gonna have a guy wear the C next season, it’s gotta be Brodzinski. Naturally, there are a few reasons why:
1. Brodz as captain gives the time and space for younger players to come into leadership roles. Young guys like Schneider, Cuylle, Otthy, Berard, Perreault etc need to be ready to take the reigns of the team. Brodz cares about and believes in these guys which is irreplaceable.
2. Coaching changes— which seems inevitable— along with making Brodz could ignite the kinda culture change we need from the roots of the org. ofc this wont directly address or fix management issues/anything beyond that, but culture change has to start somewhere.
3. A culture change oriented towards the growth of young talent will— to a degree— take the pressure off guys from the older core, NOT to say they have a pass to stop producing ie; Mika, Troch, Jt Miller even Panarin. These guys could really benefit from being relieved of responsibility by giving more ice time to younger players. This also more or less gives Laf a choice as to whether he wants to be part of the future of the team or fade away with the vets. Which ig brings me to my last point.
2. Mika and Kreider— if they even stay— should not wear an A next season. Let Panarin and Fox keep theirs, maybe give one to Jt idk. Gotta give one to a young guy, preferably Cuylle but NOT Laf, it will be Mika with an A 2.0. Laf didn’t forget how to play hockey. I don’t know what the hell happened with our guy but nothing would make me happier than to see him succeed and become an > ppg player for as long as he plays the game and especially while he wears and Rangers Sweater.
Krieder's numbers are down this year because of his broken back from carrying this team for so long

The "C", definitely not Fox, Mika, Kreider or Panarin, no freakin way. I think it has to be JT, they brought him here partly because of his no nonsense attitude, and that's exactly what we need. We need someone who can give the "Stare down" i.e. Messier.

Just a thought on the Igor extension, I think that's about what he would've gotten on the free agency market. Superstar goalies are in high demand and low supply, so if you want to keep him, that was always going to be the price.

Hindsight is 20/20 of course, but given how the season went, Drury should never have moved Goodrow or Trouba. He failed to convert the cost savings into anything that improved the team. And they needed those two guys in the room.
Players get placed on trade blocks all the time. No reason to piss and moan about it
I think a better view of the Eastern Conference is the parity in the conference. It was a year in which teams significantly improved and some imploded. It made for a close race for playoff spots. Next year the top 8 teams in the East will lock up spots earlier in the year. The only "interesting" teams making the playoffs this year are the two Florida teams and which one will miss next year.
laviloette is too defensive, even in a league getting too defensive, to win on default unless everything goes right
If you look back at how many times they pulled the goalie with more than 2 minutes left, usually 3. They IMMEDIATELY got scored on. It was a pointless move but Laviollette had them do it over and over again. They could not fight to tie a game to save their lives. Having an extra man meant absolutely nothing. If that doesn;t tell you this team had problems, I don't know what does.
The writing was on the wall with how physically weak we were in the playoffs last season. Other than from a few players, the lack of physicality wasn’t addressed this season and it showed.
Completely missed Drury putting a dagger into what had been two core players for the team namely Kreider and Trouba. Surely the value prop for this channel is not to repeat the superficial and obvious.
